  • Load Times

    Hi All

Im new to VSL, new to Synchron, new to all of this. Im a longtime kontakt user so still looking at things thru that lense. I currently own the synchron woodwinds and harp but Im finding the load times to be much longer than Im used to with other libraries. Harp seems to load the entire library no matter which articulation Im using. Woodwinds seem to load the entire articulations files, no matter which notes Im playing.

Im used to starting with a fully purged session and then only the samples that are needed for playback are loaded. Im wondering if my new-ish 64gb mac mini can even support a full orchestral template with brass and strings and perc with with the synchron player.

Ive looked at what documentation and videos I could find but no one seems to address this.

Thanks for any tips and tricks on the matter.

  • Hi there,

I'm pretty sure it will be able to handle it. I'm running Synchron Strings Pro (full version), Elite Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, and a couple of the Percussion instruments, and it's using about 8Gb of RAM, without disabling articulations. That amount can raise or lower, depending of the amount of preloaded samples you configure: if you are using fast SSD's you could try to tweak this to your liking.

Since Synchron Player was made with these libraries in mind, I'd say the use of resources is very well thought, and I guess you won't have any instrument that will demand the huge amounts from current Kontakt orchestral libraries.

    Hope this info helps.

  • Hi,

I'm also quite confident you will be fine. I'm on 64Gb RAM, Ryzen 3900x, and it seems to handle my Synchron Standard template just fine. Got Harp, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass, Pro Strings, Elite Strings, Percussion I + II and BBO Ganymedes loaded via VE Pro, and still got plenty of unused RAM. CPU load is quite high though, but in realistic usage scenarios, not problematicly so.

  • Thanks for the replies. But what about long load times? Is there any way around it loading samples it doesn't need? Im on an all SSD system.

Also, how do you check how much ram you are using per session and I was also looking at the preload setting but there isn't any info in the videos on that.

    Thanks.

    Hi Matt,

The preload size is the size of the first part of the sample that is loaded into RAM, before you're streaming from disk. We are measuring your drive speed and choose a fitting number accordingly, but you overrule this manually.

You can also decide to load your Synchron Player with disabled slots, there are quite a few options available in the engine settings. I think you would be fine to check "Force Enable All Slots" and leave all other settings like they are in the screenshot.

The RAM need of the Synchron Player is displayed in the lower right corner of the GUI.

    Best,
    Paul

    Hello

You must check in Activity Monitor/ Memory/ Swap Used that the value is zero.

If it is not that mean that Mac OS will keep moving page off and to the disk

You have to ajust the Pre-load size in the Synchron player so Swap Used is zero.

Is is better to have multiple SSD, one for system, one for VSL and one for the other libs, SSD must not be plugged on USB 2 ; SATA III is the best ; be careful of cheap and slow SSD

You can monitor if other apps are using system resources in Activity Monitor/CPU

     Good luck
