  • How long will eLicenser be supported + why spend £500 on new iLok dongles for zero benefits?

    Hi VSL team,

I've been looking at the iLock licensing, and have to say that to be forced to spend £500 to move our x12 Dell servers from eLicenser to iLok for zero benefits, makes absolutely no sense.

So, can you please confirm that eLicenser versions of VEPro7 will be available and kept up to date in the future.   version1263 is much faster than v1120, but as we only have x1 iLok dongle in the studio, it means that only my PC will be running v1263.  We cannot justify spending £500 on x12 iLok dongles.  We have not had any problems or issues with eLicenser during the 5 years we have used this technology, so we really have no need to transfer to iLok.  BUT we really need to be sure that VSL will continue to produce updates to VEPro7 going forward.

All of our Dell servers will be staying on the eLicenser versions.   If we are forced to move to iLok then I think this will make a good case for finding an alternative to VEPro7 or selling off our enormous VSL investments and ditching VSL products altogether - which I would personally not like to do as many of our projects use VSL and VEPro7, and VSL does indeed produce very usable and high quality libraries

Perhaps one way to resolve this issue would be to provide a network iLok license, as is supported by Avid for its Media Composer and ProTools software, whereby a nominated networked computer manages the licensing for several seats or clients. This would be ideal for our studio, and probably many many others, where more than 2 iLok dongles are needed.

We are really hoping for the best here.

    Hello Jonathan,

Thanks for sharing your situation and thoughts.

Here's a video that sums up the possibilities with VE Pro 7 and iLok.

There is currently no way around multiple iLok keys in a multi-computer VE Pro setup.
Your existing setup will keep on working with the available eLicenser licenses and keys. You can move to iLok whenever you are ready.

It's important to know that there will be no updates for any eLicenser VSL software products from now on.

We have looked at the network license solution and have not found it fitting for the vast majority of our users.
It is not planned to offer such a solution in the foreseeable future.

More information, FAQs, videos and manuals right here.

    Best,
    Paul

Thanks for your reply and attempt to help here, but as per my reply to a thread on VI-Control I think VSL have made a grave error of judgement and are creating a tidal wave of negative sentiment towards an otherwise great company. The solution is simple and straightforward and has been proven by a well known industry leader (network managed licensing). Can VSL please illuminate us as to why they feel this is not feasible, when the industry has already proven its worth as a professional security solution? I can't believe its purely a cost related thing!!

    Thanks for the info.

We've just spent GBP 300 upgrading our old e-licensers, 3 months ago. So to have to now ditch all but 2 of them for iLok dongles seems like we have been cheated!!!
    We have x12 VEPro servers.
Thanks to Covid and various other events we are already facing a massive dip in revenue this year. So moving to iLok is a no go until at least 2023. That means using high-quality products (VSL) without any support and any maintenance - a no go!!!
My business partner and key shareholder has now asked if we can actually ditch VSL because of the iLok situation. The difficulty with that, is we have invested a lot of $$$ in VSL products this last 2 or 3 years, and to be honest I'm not sure if there is anything as good as VEPro7 in the market right now. If there was, we would take a serious look and really think hard about moving away from VSL. It seems they are not as loyal to their customers, as their customers are to VSL - which is making us feel very nervous about VSL's future and whether we should continue to support them going forward. We're starting to feel let down, cheated and to be honest just want to get away from VSL as quickly as possible!!!

Lets hope VSL can save the day.

  • Hello Jon,

I won't go into a detailed discussion about our business decisions, but of course everything is cost related.

It is also important for us to keep things simple and listen to our users.

We are with iLok for 3 weeks now and are collecting input. Existing setups will work for years to come and many things can and will happen.

For now, it is what it is.

    Best,
    Paul
