  • ports vs channels (midi)

I've never seen any DAWs that have multiple 'ports' for any given virtual instrument.
Am I missing something? Which DAWs can take advantage of VEP's multiple ports?

I have no problems with routing midi clips to different midi channels within VEP but then that means I am limited to 16 per instance.

Do I need to use the Event VI for that? The manual says that you only need the Event VI when you are limited to VST2 support. I am using VST3. I did try the event VI but it was dropping events hopelessly (not sending note-on events for ages, then not sending note-offs - leaving me with lots of stuck notes).

I would really like to know how to access all these ports in one instance.

I'm currently using Bitwig, but I also have Studio ONE 5.5, Reaper, Ableton Live 10, Harrison Mixbus 7, Waveform 11.

    Any info much appreciated.

  • I don't know those hosts at all. Cubase or Nuendo's Inspector - for a rack instrument - connects to VE Pro VST3 port first, the channel below that. If not VST3, there is AU3, still in beta, and Event Input plugin. IE: VST3 supports multiple ports; whether the host is implementing it, I only know from those two, and on paper the Event Input workaround.

  • it looks like this [01. is the instance name, there are 16 ports enbabled in my VEP preferences]:

Okay, thanks for the info. I found the following on a 2018 VI-control post
    https://vi-control.net/community/threads/creating-multiple-midi-ports-in-reaper.71523/

So apparently reaper has this concept of MIDI buses and the guy reckons it works with VST3 ports for VE. First time I heard about it. I can't seem to wire it up using my copy of Reaper but will try again later. I'll have to ask in respective DAW forums for more info.

This is the problem I have found with learning VEP. There is little to no information that is DAW specific. I read the notes for Studio ONE in the manual and they were pretty useless. If you're not using cubase, digital performer, logic, or protools then you're out of luck. I have like 9 DAWs and none of them are protools, logic, DP or cubase. Although I am evaluating DP at the moment.

I plan on doing some YT videos on using VEP with the different DAWs as soon as I figure more stuff out. Not much out there to go on.

  • Just tried it in Studio ONE and it's nice and easy there. You just get a massive list of channels preceded by a port number. A lazy, but effective implementation.

  • Traction Waveform 11 Pro seems to cope but I will have to noodle around with it to see how it translates or whether it works at all.

I had no idea but apparently Waveform 12 dropped last month and I didn't even notice. I'll have to take it for a spin and see how fun it is to work with VEP. They have a 90 day trial.
