  • Synchron Player MASSIVE CPU & CRASHES

    Hey all,

I read the forum posts and even posted in one the threads but I had to come here and start a new thread because it appears as if the problem is much larger than expected. First off... details

MacPro (Trash Can), 128gb RAM, 2.7ghz, 12-Core, separate 2TB SSD Drive solely for my VSL Libraries, Logic Pro (latest version), all VSL products are up to date.

Here goes... I was working on a fairly good sized project but not overly blown out (about 79 tracks but they were broken up between staccato, legato and pizz samples). I was only using three instruments from VSL (Synchron Strings Pro, Synchron Harp and Oboe d'Amore) and the rest of the samples were from Spitfire, EastWest and Cinesamples. Once I had the piece in place and started to really fine tune I notice the Harp would start to sound like a late 1980s video game (plink, plunk, plink plunk). Then it would happen with the strings or oboe. Each time, Logic would start to freeze and then crash. After that I couldn't restart Logic because something was severely wrong here. So, I uninstalled and reinstalled Synchron Player and Harp Player and it was still the same.

I thought it was a SSD issue so I called OWC computing, got with their tech support and after about 3 hours of testing we realized nothing was wrong. This entire process cost me a whole 2 days of crashes, restarts, testing and so on. Lastly, I just decided to get rid of the VSL instruments in my piece and.. VOILA!!!!! The piece worked and played smoothly without issues. That sucks because the Oboe was my lead in section A of the piece. I have not been able to use or, frankly, want to use the VSL products in my pieces ( I am working on a piece for an ad agency right now and would LOVE some of the strings pro samples but I do not dare add it for fear of crashing and locking up my system. I did more restarts and reboots and pulling out my hair on Friday than I have all year. I REALLY HOPE THIS GETS FIXED SOON.

    Frustrated,
    Seth

  • Hello Seth,

Sorry to hear about these troubles.

Which OS is that, and do you have those crash reports available?
You can also send us your project, so we can investigate: support@vsl.co.at

  • Paul,

Thanks for the response.  My OS is Monterey 12.4; apparently I just missed things because when I go into Console my only crash report/logs date back to 6/25 and everything I am talking about took place on Friday, June 24.  So that sucks!  Also, I cannot re-create the project because, like I said in the posting, once I removed all VSL instances  then the project never had a hiccup or crashed again.

Frankly, I don't feel comfortable putting the Synchron player or instruments on anything at this point for fear of it crashing and locking up my whole system like before.  I know I am not the only one with CPU and crash issues (I posted on another thread earlier about the same issues). I do hope this gets fixed soon. I really like using my VLS libraries!

  • Hi Seth,

Thanks for your reply. That makes it harder to find out what might be going on.

Personally, I'm always working with version numbers for each project, so that I can roll back to previous states. Which has saved me A LOT of times.

If you happen to have a backup of that project, that would be a great help in our investigation.

    Paul

  • Paul,

I work with versions as well but I thought I had deleted the messed up version, replaced it with a non-VSL version  and went from there.  However, in searching my files, I DID find an unfinished version with the Synchron Player in use.  I am sending it over to the support email you provided here.  It's just the Logic Pro file and I hope that helps.

Also, I tried Bouncing in Place and other methods but the VSL kept taking up WAY too much CPU, making the system freeze and and crashing Logic.  So check your support email for a file called Bella's Lament.

    Thanks,
    Seth

I do but the project file is 837mb and I HAVE cut it down to just include 2 section and not all 5 sections.  Any thoughts on how I can get it to you?  DrobBox?  Thanks

  • Paul, I sent you the file via WeTransfer over this weekend. I hope you get it or can check your spam or junk folder if you’re not seeing it but I did send you the recovered file and hope you’re able to start figuring out why this keeps happening. Thank you!
