Hello.

I want to ask if anyone has used tape emulator plugin with Yamaha CFX or Steinway D274. I love these pianos, for me the best on the market, but a friend recommended me to use a tape emulator plugin to give them more quality, but of course, before buying it I want to know if anyone has used it and with what results. I have the full versions of both pianos, if someone can recommend a microphone configuration to get more warmth, it would also help me.

Thanks.

Tape simulation can smoothen the sound by adding harmonics, without cutting high frequencies with EQ.

You already have a tape simulator in the Vienna Synchron Pianos FX section (the Saturator). The manual is quite stingy with information on the parameters, so I'm not sure which of the settings would give you the best tape simulation.

Hello, sorry for the delay in responding. I see the saturator in FX, I use the full version of CFX and Steinway 274. How do you recommend I use it? Do I apply it on all microphones? Thanks.

For simulation of a tape recorder, I would create a new Aux/Return channel, and send all the microphones there. Typically, you will use Aux2, and set the Send 2 level at 0 on all the mic channels. As for the type of saturator, I would use the Soft type.

Hi. You dont' necessarily need to buy a tape emulator - there are some very good free ones, such as Chowdary ChowTape. I have U-He Satin, and I just tried it on the CFX. Its pretty subtle. Adds a bit of air and body to the tone. I think I prefer it solo without the tape saturation (it's likely already been saturated during recording and sampling, so no real need to add more without specific reason to I think).

In particular if you have one already included with the player! :)

Ha, true. On the other hand, there's not many parameters on the built in saturator, so maybe OP is looking for more knobs to twiddle in his spare time.... :)

Plus - I *still* haven't been able to figure out how to create a master channel fx within piano player - I'm sure it's simple, but escapes me... and saturation is very different when applied per mic channel vs to the whole mix, as its a non-linear process.

Hi liquidlino,

There is no master channel, but you can add mixer channels and return/aux channels by right-clicking into the empty space in the mixer.

Best,
Paul
