I see there is currently a very generous discount on Dorico at the moment,  and I am tempted.

But does it work with VI and Special edition instruments - I do not have the synchron player or the associated libraries?

VSL only supplies playback templates for the Synchron versions. There is a third party, Symphonic Riot that sells templates for all the VI series:
