What exactly does the AB switch do?

Hi! That depends on the instrument and the specific patch. But in general, it does give you an option/alternative — for example, Left-Hand vs. Right-Hand samples or glissando modes. Technical Support - Vienna Symphonic Library

I use the A/B switches quite a lot for the dynamic samples. Example: in the DYNAMIC folders - The A/B switch will allow Crescendo or Diminish (where available). This adds so much to your music. Eloy
