  • Vienna Suite eq v. MIR Pro 3D eq

Does anyone have any view on a preference between using the instrument eq presets in Vienna Suite or the equivalent character presets in MIR Pro 3D? I'm assuming that using both would be overkill / defeat the object. At present I'm using eq in Vienna Suite and not in MIR Pro.

    Thanks.

  • The main idea of MIR's "Character EQ" was to have preset-specific settings, now even more important since the introduction of "Roles". However, apart from GUI-features there is little difference between the EQ in MIR and the one in Vienna Suite Pro from a technical POV. The main additional feature of the Suite-EQ is its ability to work in 4x oversampling mode. ("Legacy" Vienna Suite EQ offers no oversampling, the Master EQ 2x oversampling.) As far as I remember there's no oversampling for MIR's EQs either.

  • Thanks for your reply Dietz. I should have explained that I'm using Vienna Suite (legacy) not the Pro version. In some recent scores I'm not using roles because I'm positioning the instruments myself (non-standard layout for multiple strings). It is possible this means I'm not using the roles properly - so do comment on that if you like.

    Thanks.

  • There is nothing wrong with positioning your instruments manually! After all, that's exactly what MIR was made for. You don't have to stick to any presets if you're happy with the result, whether it's the internal EQ or the one from the Vienna Suite. Just refrain from using both at the same time - that just yells "overprocessing". ;-)

    Kind regards,

  • I use EQ in Logic only for the singer, drums and synth.

I leave MIR Pro to set it for all VSL instruments

    I use ONLY VI instruments

I set volume to 0db in MIR and use Logic's volume

  • The great thing about the Vienna approach to presets is that the mainstream ones are exactly that - clean and transparent with nothing 'overcooked'.

re. Vienna Suite - They provide an excellent starting point and it's always worth noting where they have small cuts in the mid range of instruments - bear in mind Dietz and his colleagues are checking their work in a seriously high end acoustic environment with extremely well matched and maintained equipment (monitors amps cabling et al. So what you get by looking at the the various presets is an absolutely solid starting point for the given/expected audio sample set.

The Roles in MIR Pro3D are therefor exactly that - tailored EQ's to fit the various positions for the various rooms that the Roles are intended for inside MIRPro 3D and seated in an ensemble setting.

The Synchron Player offers you all sorts of different 'mixes' and are also a hugely useful and appreciated effort behind what can be a bewildering array of channels per instrument.

You have to decide, either you use Synchron instrument alone or use VI instrument with MIR

I have experience Synchron instrument with MIR PRO, I did not like it

    Up to you to try.😊

  • Of course you can use Synchronised Instruments in MIR Pro - this is how VSL is aiming to provide Apple Silicon M1/M2 et al.  compatibility for their VI libraries - you just choose the Mir Unprocessed Mixer Preset - and that gives you the VI Silent Stage version.

Try it v.s. VI ; you will see the difference !

I love the "Synchron" user interface, but not the result with MIR unprocessed

  • The Synchronised instruments are the same as the VI instruments - there is a certain amount of parameter editing still required to get the the Synchronised version to sound "exactly" like the VI version - but it is perfectly possible but also bear in mind that further optimisation of those samples has taken place and so there will be variation in timbre.

As an example I have to take away some of the low end 'weight' of the Synchronised Bass Drum A with an EQ to get it to closely match VI Bass Drum A .. which has a slightly less refined low end and for my purposes gets weight added to it, again with EQ.

I think VSL have been fairly clear that Silicon support for their VI libraries via Vienna Instruments Pro is not going to be soon ... if ever.

I really hope they offer those of us that have ALOT of the VI libraries bought as single instruments the opportunity to crossgrade for prices close to the way they just did with the release of Synchronised Percussion .. which is excellent .. and realistically affordable if you've already paid for the VI versions.

Up to you !!! everybody have it's taste

I Just mixed two pieces first with Synchron Instruments not being satisfied I have set those 2 pieces with VI instruments ; now I am satisfied, the instruments sounds much better.

In VI PRO the repetitive notes gives you better sound

In VI PPRO you have automatic length detect ðŸ˜Š
