Get his scores and get Sibelius which can do Penderecki type notation. I also would be very surprised if Finale couldn't so it as well.

So get either of those notation programmes and read their manual. Easy realy.

Are you contemplating doing "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima"?. I remember being a schoolboy (years ago) attending a performance in Preston's Public Hall (now a trendy wine bar!!! :twistedSmile performed by Maurice Handford (deputy to John Barbirolli) and the Hallé Orchestra. I was "in the gods" (the cheapest seats around (actually it was just standing room only) and the general public was MOST displeased! I (and a fellow student) were the only ones standing: the rest of the audience were in proper seats! I remember cheering the performance for all I was worth, met only by the frosty reception of my "elders and betters"...

Needless to say, I thought the whole evening was wonderful... Happy days...

That might be a good use of Solo Strings, Chamber Strings and the Pro Edition...

"score", the old standard notation program by Leland Smith, can do all the Penderecki markings. Still for sale, www.scoremus.com/score.html . I think it's still $800 US for an old DOS-based program (but it runs in a dos window on xp quite well). Still my favorite for printed output, though I'm trying to get more proficient at Finale.

In the copies of his scores that I have there is a legend at the front which describes each of his notational symbols.

there's an interesting david cope book called new directions in music. not so new anymore but some interesting insights on alternate notation methods (including penderecki) and how they were derived to communicate the composer's ideas. the great thing it seems about its penning around 1970 is it came at a time when people were moving from acoustic instruments to include electronic and the alternate notation craze was perhaps at (or maybe just a little past) its zenith.
