  • Question for the community (and the mods)

I've seen...err, heard a lot of great work posted in this forum by users of the VSL. And more than that, a lot of WONDERFUL comments from the community. Great tips on orchestration, technique, style, etc. So I'm curious,

Would it be ok to post MP3s not made with the VSL?

I'm curious because I'd be interested to get some feedback on some of my compositions but I'm waiting to get the VI [[[:)]]].

I'm a complete amature when it comes to music composition and have had no formal training so I'd be interested in sharing some pieces to get some feedback. Up to this point, I've just written what "sounds good to me." But I while I like it, I would also like to know what other musicians think... anything other than my mother's "Yeah, honey. Sounds great!" (which she would say if it was just me banging my head against the keyboard)

However, if the mods/community prefer...I can wait till I get the VI and it actually sounds good... what I have right now is a 50meg soundfont file that ... well, it's not the VSL [[[:)]]] Plus my main goal in getting the SC is to share my works with others... and you guys can at least imagine what the music is supposed to sound like [[[:)]]]. I'd hate to spend all that money on the SC and then have no one want to listen to my works (yeah yeah.. me and every other composer on the planet).

    Thanks,
    JP

  • Well, I don't think there would be any harm in providing links to compositions you have if you want critisism, or help with the compositions. But I think you may find that people will be happier to hear your VSL efforts when you do them.

Why not post them at Northern Sounds, where you will also get a lot of feedback, some of it from the same people as here [[[[:)]]]]

    JP,
DG's suggestion is thoroughly sound and a good start. Northern Sounds' members, new and old, post demos, and get a lot of feedback. There's good info here and there to help new and experienced musicians make progress.
I tactfully suggest that posting demos made with other sample libraries in VSL pages is not really a 'tasteful' thing to do. They are a very tolerant bunch here, so i guess it's a matter of what you feel is the 'right' thing to do, but personally, i would refrain from doing something like that. This is, after all, a specific developer forum, not a generic one.

Northern sounds is not sample library specific, so you would have no issues there, and could post freely.

    Good luck in the future,

    Alex.

  • My opinion, if you feel you are a legitimate, possible, future buyer, post here. You'll get a different slant to the responses than at NS -- not necessarily better, but sometimes more useful.

  • Thanks DG and hermitage59,

Posting non-VSL recordings here didn't seem the most tasteful thing to me either (hence the reason I asked). I will definitly be buying the VIs but it still didn't seem quite right. I also asked because I've heard recordings here that use other patches than the VSL ones... though those all contained some part of the VSL.

Also, I ask about posting here because I don't know of any other forum to do so. I'll be more than happy to check out other communities on the web. Could someone PM me a link to the NS website? Or any other forums they would like to share. There is so much on the net, it's hard to find good places.

Thanks again everyone, you all are great! [:)]
