The "rainbow ball" turns....and turns.....and turns.....I would say that some songs take maybe 40 seconds to save-that's slow!!

The weird thing is, it doesn't seem to make much difference whether the songs are crammed full of VIs and tracks.

A song which is 1.7 MB in size can take as long as a 3.5 MB song to save, but not every song seems to have this problem. I'm wondering whether my Autoload song might be "overloaded" somehow but does a big Environment (lots of Objects) make Logic slow? I'm using a Quad with 4.5 GB RAM (Logic 7.2.1, OS 10.4.6) so that should be meaty enough, right?

Also, after saving, Logic reloads all VIs which use Sample RAM - the exs Instruments of course, but also VSL instruments & so on. Is there any way to shortcut that process?

Would appreciate any suggestions/ideas -thanks!

Nigel--

Thanks for bringing this up. I sort of moved away from Logic in general because of the looooooooooong startup, the overnight Project Manager, and the slow saves, among other things. Good app, but you could almost go start your own country while waiting.

I'd be interested in hearing people's responses to this question.

The startup time doesn't bother me....it's mostly just once a day, and you can see in the Logo window everything Logic is doing when initializing: also if you have many Sampler Instruments -as I and most VSL users do- that's part of the process I suppose.

The project manager *is * slow, but so is for that matter Kontakts database scan. It's simply a massive amount of data - although I'm sure this could be speeded up, as any ExsManager (Redmatica) user will know.

The problem with the saves is not generic to Logic - my colleagues don't have thos problem, and neither do all of my songs. It's interesting that you have the same problem, JWL, but I'm hoping it's something which can be cured with some troubleshooting.

Saves are instant here too (and have always been, even on my old OS9/G4 system) - I even normally save during playback. I have "Load Project Managager on program launch" unticked in preferencees. I never use it anyway - Redmatica's EXS Manager is much faster, but I agree, one shouldn't have to pay an extra $80 for something that the Logic should be able to do itself.

Nigel, have you tried turning Project Manager off - perhaps the PM will try and do its work while saving, and so take more time, 'managing your project"?

What does take a bit of time is scanning of EX instruments during startup (30 secs?).I don't keep ALL my EXS insts in the Sampler Insruments folder. If I'm doing some projects where I don't need for example my whole Asian collection I move those into a "Sampler Instruments unused" folder.

If I still need them after all in a song I just move them back into Sampler Instruments while logic is running and select "refresh Menu" in the EXS Instrument selection panel.

Having the Sampler Instruments folder not completely full also make the EXS Instruments selection menu slightly more responsive I think.

I'm with Dom on this one....

Project Manager is a pig! I never have it on anymore, unless I really have to do something with it. Then I quit Logic and reboot. I also use EXS manager (no need to start your own country...) which is very fast. Saves are instant here.

Project manager (PM) is probably slowing everyting down. The problem is that certain of your songs may have a screenset configured with PM open, so even if you think PM is off, it may open with that song. You have to kill it completely by eliminating any trace of PM, even if it means checking 90 screensets in each song.

Colin, Dom,

thanks for the feedback - interesting suggestions!

How do you turn project manager off though? If you don't load it on startup-which I don't anymore as it does take a long time- surely it's not active?

I don't know how to check whether Project manager is active in a song. If you do open PM and then close the PM window, it's no longer "visible" in the song. If it isn't open, it's then not saved with the song or the screen set AFAIK.

best,

Nigel

I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I find once a song has been saved as a project, then it's kind of spoilt, and there is some project management going on that i can't stop. However what will help is to go to file/project/settings and uncheck everything there.

On almost all my songs all the options in file/project are greyed out and those are the ones that give me no problem If you can get your template to behave in this way then you should be fine.

And yes, always make sure Project Manager isn't loaded at startup (in preferences).

Ok...thanks for the input- it seems the solution is simple: if, in File/Project Settings, "copy exs Instruments" is ticked, the song takes much longer to save, even without any Instruments loaded in the Song!

Perhaps Logic does some kind of scan when this option is ticked, which slows down the Save.

HTH (well of course it's helped me hehe :winkSmile

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for that info. I guess Logic/Project manager are looking through drives for .exs files and samples.

Pleased that's sorted...
