  • Epic Strings Next, Right???

This is the NEXT Horizon DVD that everyone is waitng for!!
Sure, I'm only speculating, but seeing as how just about every VSL user is drueling for that sweeping Hollywood String sound, it is the MOST logical next step . How about it Paul, could you plant a seed of hope for us here, an early Stocking Stuffer, huh???

  • I don't think VSL is going to develop further collections for any other format than their new Vienna Instruments. Horizon is not in that format so it's not likely you will see further Horizon instruments in whatever format you have. At some point they will no doubt release to the general public the epic Appassionata violins which you could run as VST or AU while still running your Horizon instruments, Many of us still run the older collections along side the new VI. VI is so addicting in it's ease and wealth of expression you will want to go that route if at all possible.

    Appassionata strings are great btw.

  • Why so glum? The new interface maximizes what you can do with the library by a considerable amount. You can run it AU or VST. Epic strings will be a seperate collection just like Epic Horns I imagine. So your only dillemma would be hosting the software but everyone is running AU VST these days.

  • I'm sure it does, I just haven't had the money to upgrade or get another computer to get V.I to run smoothe. I doubt it would run well on just my 1 computer (1.7 ghz P4, 1.5 gigs ram).
    One day.......

  • I'm in the same boat. Even if I get more VI I have nowhere to put it. Prices are dropping with new computers coming out so shop around and save your pennies [:)]

Don't want to go too far OT, but you bring up an interesting point:

more VI's, no place to put them.... and prices drop on 2.7 and Quad PPCs....

Will Leopard's true 64-bit capabilities finally encourage software developers to write 64-bit apps that will work on PPCs? Or is the PPC forever doomed to limitations of the 970 chip?

    Articles like this:
    http://developer.apple.com/macosx/64bit.html

make me wonder why apps not there yet with Tiger...

But if we're going to continue adding VIs, then something has to be done to make putting together farms more affordable for those of us who earn less than six figures per contract.

JWL, to jump on to the OT-train ... i really can't hear this marketing blather anymore ... and we hear it for years now.

The use of the LP64 data model ensures that source code created for Linux, Sun, or SGI platforms can be easily ported to Tiger
oh yes, we see a lot of applications for which this has been done ... eehhhmmm what were their names quickly?
i'm now avoiding to de-face several other paragraphs ...

i'd assume not too many developers will take the plunge and develop *true* 64-bit apps for PPC with the *advantage* of having to maintain 2 platforms where one of them is already at its end of life ...

yesterday was a sad day in the computerworld - SGI announced to end production of MIPS-based systems and so of IRIX, but provides support until 2013, _that_ is what i'd call maintenance

  • Wonder if this strengthens the case for quicker, faster, and more serious development for Linux.

    Things to think about. Hmmmmmm.........

CM, your quote about GUIless 64 bit, and do apps run rings true in the research I've done and to some clumsy degree, understand.

I'm also wondering if a dedicated Audio/Midi/Video package built within a custom OS would kill off some of the opposition making 'enthusastic' claims.

    Vienna Sequencer with OS, anyone?

    Regards,

    Alex.

  • Damon B - I sympathize with the money issues, believe me. However I got a refurbished Dell PC for around $600 (count those zeroes carefully, Mac users) that can run VI perfectly. Of course it isn't as coooooooool as a Mac. I try to compensate with my own behavior. [H]

By the way, everyone here should listen to those Damon B demos - they are beautiful!

  • Where are Damon's demos?

  • Thanks for the links. Pretty stuff-- especially liked Perchance to Dream.

    Best,

  • Yes, I really like that. The Charlotte piece also because it uses a minimum of means to create a lot of atmosphere. I am very interested in this kind of mood. It is a hushed, melancholy, disillusioned atmosphere that is very vivid. These two are like miniature tone poems.

  • Wow, thanks guys for listening to the songs! I appreciate the kind words [:)]
William, thanks for the heads up in letting me know 1 computer is running VI perfectly. Time to get a new one!

  • Damon, no problem, and I am responding just to try and get more people to listen to your demos.

My other favorite demos (of original music, not including the incredible Bacall and Kaufman and VSL demos) are also Kevin Kleisch "Amy's Theme" - a beautiful work of tone painting. Also, "The Traveler" by Simon Raven. That is perfection. Also Matt B with those astoundingly energetic "Lord of Ireland" things - wow! Those are awesome. Better than Howard Shore, easily. These demos inspire me to do better with VSL, because they show how it is capable of creating perfect music. Not a mere substitute FOR music, but perfect music.

Don't you mean Matthias Günthert? He's great, I love his music. And he's so kind and answer some mails... [:)]

  • Right, Matthias Gunthert. Sorry I mixed that up. His "Ready to Fight" and the battle music are excellent.
