  • Logic Express and VI

    Hi all,

I am begining an string section arranging project for a world music project and they require a detailed mockup/backing track as well as the scores. So i will buy VI solo or chamber strings not sure yet which.
Anyhow, i also have to produce a loop based backing track for which i use stylus rmx, which i normally use in protools. I would use finale usually for score work but i feel logic is my best bet to combine the requirements of this job.

I wonder does anyone use logic express to run the V I s with sucess, as i cant really justify the investment in loic pro for this one job. Are there any limitations in working with say solo strings VI and logic express that i should know about.
    Thanks for your help
    Pat

  • Hello Pat,

If you don't use more than sixteen tracks, Logic Express is ok.
If you want to use more, it won't work.

  • How come only 16 tracks?

I just checked the Logic Express specifications:

    http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/specs.html">http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/specs.html

and it says 64 software instrument tracks!

I am also considering Logic Express, so I would be very grateful for clarification on this issue.

  • Hello,

I am sorry, I meant 16 Midi channels.
See the post below. If you do a search for Logic Express (search for all terms), you will find the problems. VSL has confirmed the problem that only one port can be used.

    Hello Gagga,

I use Plogue Bidule now, which seems to work fine, so I'm allright now.
I wanted Logic Express as a host, but it will never work, because Apple confirmed that only one port can be used.
Using Logic on a second Mac would cost me Logic Pro again, quite a lot of money.

    Gerard

Thanks very much for the clarification. I read the other thread you started on this subject. If I understand correctly, this is only a problem if you are running Express on a slave computer and want to use more than one physical midi in port. You could still (theoretically of course) run as many as 64 instances of VI in Logic Express if you were using it as the master DAW. Right?

  • Yes I think so.
In fact the problem with the extra ports proved to be a bit theoretical too.
As every VI uses only one Midi channel, I discovered that it was more the CPU and the memory that was the bottleneck on my Mac G5.

  • Thanks so much for the replies guys, very in formative indeed. I think i will go ahead with thelogic express paln
