1.Vep 7 Templates for VSL libraries 8/23/2021 12:27:57 AM

Thanks for the help.  I really appreciate it!

Getting my template sorted.  It's not as bad as originally seemed.  I mean, sure it's taking DAYS but I'm getting in the zone here haha.

Thanks again

Walter

Dewdman42 - Dude, man.  If you happen to know off the top of your head where those files reside on this gargantuan website, that would be great.  My initial searches (MyDownloads, Music, Academy, Music, Manuals etc) have laid big goose eggs.

Thanks :)

Yeah, that makes sense.  I jumped in without doing a more “basic” sample set first.  I’m coming from either orchestrating for real players or from just “winging” it without VEP.  I’ve always used to use the EXS-24 versions of VSL from back in the day… (even using the crazy round robin stuff in earlier versions of Logic) it was certainly not as good as what we have available to us now, but it was strangely easier to set up, since I did it all in logic. (I’m an Environment page junkie.)  It was so rare I’d need a full orchestra for the type of work I typically do, that my old stuff worked just fine… well, until it didn’t, and now I’m upping my game.  (Or at least attempting)

Anyhoo, I’ll stop my complaining and keep cranking.

Maybe I’ll set up something using Epic Orchestra first, and then take it from there.  I’m more used to writing for single instruments (like you would for real instruments) and not ensemble patches, but I gotta start somewhere I suppose.

Man... I'm realizing just how much setup there is to get an orchestra "at the ready". Template setup is such a huge part of this process, especially if you just want to load up an orchestra and get to the writing part.

It seems that for customers who go "all in" -- let's say with VI Pro, a full library (Symphonic Cube), VEP7,  and MIR  -- it seems there would be some pre set VEP7 templates for a standard orchestra using MIR with standard instrument placements?

Perhaps it's too much to ask as there are too many variables (which library? which samples? which room?) but man... my brain is melting and I just want to get to writing some music haha.  It seems there should be a "lowest common denominator" generic full setup template out there to jettison from...

I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining... I'm just a little frustrated after spending so many days and hours on this not making music.

I'm quite familiar with the technology on the DAW end (I've been a full time professional composer on Logic since the Emagic days) but I'll admit I'm new to VEP and MIR.  My master/slave setup is working nicely.  Now it's just the template that's slowing me down.

So I might be missing something, which is why I'm here asking.  I also might not be missing something, and there is no "quick and dirty" way for a full orchestra.  Nose? Meet grindstone.

Thanks!

5.VEP7 using 10G ethernet connected directly between 2 computers 6/4/2021 1:18:54 AM

It's taken a minute, but I've made great progress.

I picked up a 10GB card for the PC/Slave.  I didn't have a spare slot for it;.. it wasn't a 1X PCIe, which is all I had available.  I could have reworked things, but that would have cost a lot of $$, and at $200 for the 10G card, I was already operating at a loss.  (I'm sure I'll be able to use it one day)

I picked up a $15 1G NIC for the PC/Slave.  I installed it and set up an ad hoc network between the PC/Slave and the Mac/Master.  Both computers have two NIC connections, and I assigned them on an unused subnet and used. no gateway.

It took a few tries, but eventually I got a connection on VE.  It's pretty rock solid.  Initial tests have negligible latency and good sound with a buffer size of 128 and it's not even in Logic's "Low Latency Mode"

I'm sure it'll change once I slap a zillion instruments on there, but this is already so much better than it was before.

6.VEP7 using 10G ethernet connected directly between 2 computers 5/9/2021 4:42:59 PM

After more forum diving here, it seems that 10G is a negligible improvement as it applies to VEP.  I'm still going to get a 10G card for the PC... I'm guessing a direct connection (of any type) is going to be better than what I have now... as there are multiple switches between my two computers (I have a fairly...involved...network in my studio)

Once I've installed the card I just have to figure how to have VEP use the 10G NIC connection exclusively, as the computers will still "see" each other via my regular network.  I wonder if the master computer will "see" two different connections to the PC.  Only one way to find out... :)  Maybe I have a messed up idea of "fun" but I'm kinda looking forward to setting it up and seeing if I can get it to work.

7.VEP7 using 10G ethernet connected directly between 2 computers 5/8/2021 2:50:26 PM

Greetings.  I am brainstorming this morning. (ahhh caffeine)

I use LPX on a MacBook Pro triggering samples from a PC using VE.  It works, but can be wonky at times.  I'm going though multiple switches.  I know that can add to problems.

I ordered an M1 Mac mini w/a 10G Ethernet port.  I already use a thunderbolt 3 dock with an ethernet port, so the Mini will have access to two ethernet ports.

If I picked up a 10G network card for the PC (giving it two Ethernet ports) would I be able to do connect the 10G ports from PC to Mac together directly -- only for use with VE (no routers, no switches... a direct connection), while using the regular gigabit ports for my regular networking, internet etc etc?

In my mind, this should work really nicely. Question #1 - Would it?

Question #2 What sort of network setup would one need to do for the direct connection on a separate network?  I'm guessing both 10G NIC cards would need to be in the same subnet? Static IP? Or, set up a DHCP server on the Mac?  I don't think I've connected two computers directly without a router/switch since the Laplink days hahah.

Thanks in advance for any insights you may have.

8.arpeggios going down in harp collection 1/21/2014 2:43:20 AM

Yeah, that's the thing... I hit the keyswitches for A/B, and they change, but no change in sound.  the description of the matrix on the bottom right (I'm using VSL as an AU in Logic) says A/B switch up/down...

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the whole thing?  I'm pretty new at this...

9.arpeggios going down in harp collection 1/20/2014 8:36:27 PM

Greetings.  I'm rather new to Vienna Instruments (picked up my first one after years of using Opus 1 and 2 from the Horizon series) so please pardon me if my question is stoooooopid.

Looking at the arpeggios in the Harp collection...  there are matricies that claim that A/B is up/down... however, there are no arpeggio patches in the "b" slot nor can I find any arpeggio patches going down in my library.  I do have the full harp collection (as far as I know)

Is there yet another collection I need to get?  oy.

I'm guessing this topic has been covered some where in the forum.  For some reason, searching for "harp" in the forum didn't produce results... (I got the same results...which was basically everything... as if there was no search at all...)

Thanks for any info!
