1.SSD and Mac Mini 11/17/2014 1:55:48 AM

The Master running thr DAW does not need to have very fast disk access. A SATA III SSD will do the job even if it is plugged on a SATA II bus

It is the computer that will contains all your samples that need to have very fast disk access

2.Bottlenecking 11/16/2014 5:45:30 AM

I will put one of the MacMini as Master and the Macpro as slave.

The DAW does not need much power, VSL does

My slave computer running my VSL libraries is a Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM.  I am planning to put an internal SSD drive in it, maybe a Crucial M550 512GB to start with.  I have read that I can expect to load maybe 10 times as many samples into my template as with the regular external hard drive which I am using now.  What settings do I need to adjust to make this happen once the drive is installed?  Is it just the buffer size that needs adjusting or will it just automatically allow me to load more samples/patches?  Apologies if this has been answered before but I'm hoping that spending $250 or so on an internal SSD will significantly increase the number of instances and instruments that I can have loaded at any one time.

Thank you,  Andy

Is your Mac Mini with a Sata II or Sata III interface ? if it is a SATA II you will not be able to get all the speed of your Sata III SSD

You set this in Directory Manager.

You may need that some instruments will require a larger buffer

I have set mine to the minimum buffer size, except Trumpet C

you have to try until you get no click and pops

There is a litle USB "pig tail" that I use with dongles. If there is an accident, it's more likely, that the pig tail or the USB port *PLEASE DON"T LET THIS HAPPEN* will be damaged, not the dongle.

this is very interesting, can you give us the link

6.2 Vienna Keys (eLicensers) on 1 Computer. 11/14/2014 2:17:34 PM

If you want to have a dongle for home and a dongle for traveling you need two licenses for the same product

Except VE 5 and VI Pro that has a 3 licences each.

What is not clear to me :

If I own SE, SE + and most of the Individual instrument. Can I have the licenses  of SE on a dongle and the licences of all the individual instruments on another.

So I can use SE and SE + on one traveling computer and the main lib on my BIG computer

So far I think that the Dongle is too long for travelling, there are much more chances you brake it.

If it is behind a desktop there are no problems, but connected to the USB port of a MBP, it is very dangerous

What could be a very good idea is to enable with your dongle for a week of two the licences on a laptop and beeing able to remove the dongle off the USB port

What is a shame on all this is that the user that has paid there library have constrait because of the one that are trying to pirate it

Now that VSL has more time, they should think of a solution that does not penalize the user that has paid !

One dongle = One license

8.Steinberg products and Yosemite 11/14/2014 9:58:54 AM

I just received a mail from Steinberg, they say to wait to move to Yosemite

9.New Vienna key - how do I transfer? 11/12/2014 4:19:19 AM
Michael C. wrote:

Paul,  have you considered making it possible to transfer all licenses at once instead of having to do each one separately?

Mike

I have ask this a few month ago, it depends of Steinberg !

If you have some friends in the development of Steinberg contact them !

The best will be to implement a multiple selection transfer !

Will that be possible writing an Apple Script ?

If I understand what you say : Create a raid 0 is better than two separates disk ?

Yes for the Libs it is an advantage as this should gain I/O traffic by 1.5 ; allowing to reduce pre-load buffer size

but be carefull, if you have a problem on one disk you loose both, so backup it contents on a normal HD

The advantage of a Raid 0 on the Libs is that they hardly changes so you are not fregmenting you Raid

I will not put my system on a Raid 0 but on a Raid 1, mine is on a separate 64 GB SSD

For storing songs :

1) Your song only contains MIDI, use a normal HD

2) Your song contains a lot of audio track ; this will depends of the number of audio track, you may have to put this song on a raid 1 of HD 10 000 rpm or on a SSD

11.New Vienna key - how do I transfer? 11/11/2014 6:15:45 PM

You use the eLincenser,  it is hell because you have to drag and drop one license at a time

12.SSD Drives with New Mac Pro and VE Pro / DP8 11/11/2014 6:02:03 PM

The best to the worse place to store your samples, especially VSL ones (The best is to run the BlackMagic disk speed test )

- Raid 0 of Apple internal SSD

- Internal Apple internal SSD

- Raid of SSD on a PCI card (check the speed before to buy)

- SSD on a PCI card (check the speed before to buy)

- On a Sata III card, Raid 0 of SSD

- On a Sata III card, SSD

- On a Sata II card, Raid 0 of SSD

- On a Sata II card, Raid of HD (Raptor ........) > 10 000 rpm

- On a Sata II card, Raid of 7200 rpm

To forget :

- FW800 HD

- FW 400 HD

- USB 1 & 2 HD

- 5400 rpm disks

13.using MIR Pro for huge mixing project 11/9/2014 5:05:51 PM

DG, you are not nice with Dietz, he deserve holiday too !

As VSL is open 365 days a year they have to have support all the time !

You would not like in August a "Closed for holiday " on the main page of VSL site

What I will try is to put Cubase on one "small" computer and VEPRO MIR on your I7

It did not check for me, but I did not had my Elicencer USB dongle pluged in

Can VSL fix this ?

Why cant VSL put there software in the AppStore ?

AppStore doesn't allow plugins. And they take a 30% cut for the "convenience".

VE PRO is not a plug-ins !

If the Apps is free, 30 % of zero = zero Big Smile

You could had it on a demo mode !

Just jocking

16.Has anybody tried Yosemite 10/20/2014 10:57:46 AM

I have tried on my Macbook pro, got crashes with Compressor and AuvalTool).Sad

After updating to the last version of VSL software, no more crashesBig Smile

It is many years I am asking to receive information on new release !

Why cant VSL does the same that Apple ?

Why cant VSL put there software in the AppStore ?

Best

I'm running Yosemite on both my master (mac pro early 2008) and slave (macbook pro late 2013) computers. Everything else is working perfectly but VE PRO 5 server interface in logic pro x on my master computer isn't able to find the running VE PRO 5 server on my slave computer. The machines find each other without any problems in finder but VE PRO 5 just won't do this. What could be the problem?

What are the IP adresses of master and slave ?

18.Storing Library Samples on the system SSD drive on a Macbook Pro retina 2014? 10/20/2014 10:48:04 AM
astukaskas wrote:
Anyway: do you think i do something REALLY wrong if i use the library and the system on the same super fast internal? .

You can alway try on the super fast internal, but make two volumes , one for system, one for VSL samples

also considering the enormous amount of stream bandwidth and access / read on system files )

It is not the system that will use bandwidth, it is reading VSL samples

19.Key Switching Articulations in Logic, smartest way? 10/19/2014 4:18:43 AM

Cyril wrote:
How do you do if you have to give the score to a real orchestra
This was answered in my previous reply:

Do you have a video for this ? You should not have to enter articulation changes twice , also you should be able to change articulation just for one note

I noticed you had 16 midi channels where you define the instrument name, can you have multiple 16 midi channels, my template has 100 instruments

How many keyswitch can you have per instrument ?

Can you send 2 notes for a keyswitch i.e.  C0 C1, C0 D1, ......D0 C1, D0 D1...... (you need this to have access to the presets levell II of VSL instruments)

When I write a score I have one line per instrument, I dont have a line that contains many instruments

What you have done is great but you need to have access to the Meta data of the score to be able to have a real "LOGIC EXPRESSION MAPS" from the score

I have put this in the Core audio develloper forum, but .....

Ask for it, more people will ask more there is chance we will have it in 2101 ;(

Specifying Articulation in the score is THE solution

I also posted on Mac Rumors, and it seems like there's a consensus AGAINST getting a 12-core nMP for DAW use since most audio software cannot really utilize that many cores, and so the individual processor speed is the crucial factor. Any more opinions on this?..

I can tell you it is not true with Logic and VSL

Has anybody tried Yosemite with VEP/MIR Logic and PCI MOTU system ?

Your workaround works in the "old way" - have you heard about the Cubase Expression Maps?

Are you talking to me ?

I would love to have Logic Expression Maps, this is THE  solution.

You are doing a great job but we want to be able to do the same in the Logic score, and today it is not possible because in the macro you cannot deal with Meta events

What you have done and what I have done is a "do-it-yourself" because the develloper at Emagic and now at Apple are stupid enough not wanting to add an equivalence of the "Cubase Expression Maps" in Logic

25.Storing Library Samples on the system SSD drive on a Macbook Pro retina 2014? 10/16/2014 1:05:51 PM

look at this;

If this solution is slower than th internal drive you can put your system on it and put your lib in the internal ssd :

Thunderbolt Storage With Any 2.5" Hard Drive or SSD

We just completed a review of the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter which is designed for Seagate's line of GoFlex portable hard drives. The Thunderbolt adapter is appealing, but with current Seagate externals it can only go so far, equaling USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 speeds due to the limitations of the external hard drives offered. What's really interesting though, is the Thunderbolt adapter uses a standard SATA interface for data and power, meaning users could buy the $99 sled and connect pretty much any 2.5" hard drive to SSD to take full advantage of the Thunderbolt port, without paying the massive premium for current pre-packaged external Thunderbolt storage options. That's exactly what we did, pairing the Thunderbolt adapter with the Intel SSD 520 and showing how much performance scales from USB 2.0 to native SATA.
