1.developing a workflow with VSL libraries 10/10/2022 9:49:18 AM

I know what you're talking about; the huge amount of articulations can be overwhelming at first. But as mentioned above: it does depend on your workflow a lot.

Recently I dug deeper into the SlotXF options in VI Pro and this brings a whole new dimension to the whole thing. I I use Dorico for the most part and with the extra options SlotXF gives, the possibilities are not ebdless, but at least huge and really add a lot to get very good playback.

2.Voicing option in Synchron Player 10/2/2022 7:53:50 AM

Hi there,

In VI Pro there's the 'voice' tab, where you can set voicings for multi patches, which goes mostly for Brass bytheway. Please note: I'm not talking about the Dimension libraries, but the other ones like Brass I + II. This option gives you the possibility to split a patch, so it will be divided over 2, 3, or 4 instruments, which results in a more realistic sounding playback. E.g. a played triad will sound with three seperate Trumpets, instead of 3x3=9.

Since I owe a lot of Synchron libraries, I was hoping this option would be there too, but either I can't find it, or it isn't there, or maybe it's named differently?
Hopefully someone can give me an answer to this question.

TIA!

3.Long saving times of VI Pro templates in VE Pro 7_iLok versions 5/22/2022 8:12:09 PM

Same here, I have a large template in Dorico 4, covering a full orchestra spreaded over 10 instances in VE Pro.

Before the iLok conversion everything worked well, (auto)saving times were acceptable, but now after the conversion it may take up to 5 minutes to save.

Dorico is autosaving while I'm wrting this reply and has become unresponsive for at least 15 minutes now, so my work is gone, I'm afraid.

I can't find a solution on this forum or internet, or did I miss something?

4.5900X or 5950X 2/7/2022 9:01:23 PM
Okay, thanks for the update.
Almost all my drives are Samsung, never have any issues with then, but when your system doesn't boot, that's really frustrating.

I've checked the price for a system based on yours, but still leaning towards the Ryzen 5900X.
5.5900X or 5950X 2/7/2022 8:14:57 PM
That's weird, but I can read it.
It looks like a decent build! Somehow I lean to a Fractal Design case, but that's just a matter of taste, as I have one now too and am very happy with it.
I will take a look at difference in specs for the hardware between your build and the one I'm aiming at; if the price difference is to big to justify a higher investment price, I might as well copy your build. I think I will feel a huge improvement with that system compared to my own pc now. And based on that you say it runs very well, that's the best argument.

Thanks for your reply. Would you mind sharing your pc specs? I'm very interested to know them.
7.5900X or 5950X 2/7/2022 1:40:09 PM

Hello Ben,

Thanks for your reply.
I'm not the kind of composer working with 100's of tracks in his template, I'm more of a traditional composer so to speak, so not 30+instances in VE Pro. I already was thinking in the direction of 5900X, also beacuse tests do show some better performance with the 5950X, but it's not that this is crucial to build a modern, futureproof system. Still not sure whether to go for the Intel i9-12900 or the 5900X. Will dive into that in the near future.

8.5900X or 5950X 2/6/2022 1:39:07 PM

I'm diving into building a new PC. Currently I'm using a i7-4790k, which has served me pretty well for the past 7 years or so, but now has reached it limits, despite fast SSD's, VE Pro and 64GB of RAM, and keeping the pc in good condition with some utility software.

It turns out that the AMD CPU's are highly regarded for music production, as well as the new 12th gen Intel CPU's. Unfortunately the latter are running pretty hot and are more power hungry, so I think I go for AMD this time, although AM4 is said to have reached its limits for being updated/ugraded, where the new Intel platform is new and will be further developed and enhanced in the future.

Anyway, the way I think about it now, is that I either go for the 5900X or 5950X, where the latter is about €230 higher in price, but has 4 extra cores and is generally faster. I've also checked the 3950X, but this one is not much cheaper ATM, so no need to look into that one for now.

The main question is: will I really benefit from those 4 extra cores (= 8 extra threads) in my DAW (Studio One 5) and Dorico, where my samples wil be hosted on the same machine in VEP, making it worth to invest the extra money? Or is the 12 core 5900X more than powerful enough so I can save the money, or invest it in faster memory f.e.?

9.Low volume on Synchron libraries 12/31/2021 12:57:12 PM

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I understand your remark about 'how the expression and Vel XF was set'. This is how I use it:

  • CC11 - Expression is set to 127 and only goes down if I need (really) soft dynamics.
  • CC1 - Dynamics.
  • CC7 - Volume, level is set to 100.

The Brass patches 'Long notes' and 'Legato' and so on are using the 'Con ff' patch, so you also get the final (=loudest) layer for the loud passages.

Personally I think everything is as it should be to get a well sounding (i.e. not distant and soft) Brass choir. Unfortunately this is not the case, unless I use a Compressor or Maximizer, which gives good results, altough I'm not sure how this all will be in the final mix as everything may get too much 'pumped up', if you know what I mean.

10.Low volume on Synchron libraries 12/19/2021 11:46:43 AM

Thanks for your reply. I did the compressor trick as well, which indeed makes a huge difference. It's more that I was afraid something in my intalled libraries had gone wrong, or that I use them in the wrong way, or even had to buy the full version to make them really shine. It's good to see that I'm not the only one who encountered it. The libraries are soft  from themselves I read yesterday, so I guess you have to pump it up using a compressor or maximizer.

11.Low volume on Synchron libraries 12/16/2021 7:25:06 PM
I run into the fact that my Synchron libraries sound pretty soft on my system. I have Synchron strings pro, Synchron Brass pro (both standard) and Synchronized Woodwinds. I really have to turn up the main volume of my speakers to get a decent volume. Next to that, they sound quite far away, nothing comes close to what I hear in the demos on the website, or from other users.
I've put up the volume slider to 100 in the Synchron player, I tried different mixer settings from the presets, messed around with mic settings in the several default mix options, but nothing really helps. All this keeps me away from using the library and go back to the old VI libraries, which do give me the wide range of dynamics, which I don't have in the Synchron libraries. A passage in dynamics from mp and below is pretty much inaudible, mf and up is audible, but sounds far away.
I'm on Windows 10, 64Gb RAM, SSD's for the software and samples. Most of the time I'm using VEP with Dorico, Cubase or Studio one. In all three programs the problem is the same. The problem is In both Synchron player standalone and in VEP.
12.Tone low(er) brass 2/23/2021 3:01:47 PM

This is something I noticed while playing a bit with the Tenor and Bass Trombone from the VI Libraries (full).

When I play legato or staccato with the Tenor Trombone or Triple horn, the difference in played tones is pretty big and therefore clearly audible. The 'normal' sound for me is good, but half of the time it sounds as if most of the lower frequencies are gone, leaving me with a much thinner sound. I suppose this has to do with RR notes, but it makes the instruments difficult to use, especially in solo lines. The different samples are easily triggered simply by leaving a rest between two notes, then you will probably hear it as well.

Same for the Bass trombone, but mostly then with staccato: from Low C (below the staff) and down is okay, but going up half of the time adds a razor-like sound to the staccato, especially at higher velocities and clearly audible in repeated tones.

Is there an option to tackle this, or do I just have to 'live with it'? Any help welcome!

13.Download Manager Issues 2/17/2021 2:34:54 PM

Hi Paul,

Thanks for replying this fast! At a certain point the speed went up as you mention, but never exceeded 3 MB/s.

I'm installing the Cellos as we speak, 2nd violins, the Stereo update and Snchronized woodwinds are in the qeue now.

14.Download Manager Issues 2/17/2021 1:59:54 PM

I know it's a bit of an old thread, but I'm running into the problem of slow download speed as well here. I'm downloading Synchron Strings I, Cello's, 2nd violins and the stereo update, plus Synchronized woodwinds. The best speed I can get is 2.5 MB/s for one single instrument to download. I've paused the other ones so the bandwidth isn't being spread over several downloads. Unnecessary to say it takes hours and hours to download the package, which I started with yesterday.

I've disabled virusscanners, Firewalls and VPN software, but this didn't help, so enabled them again for safety reasons. Normally my downloadspeed is much higher than this, so i'm not sure what is the culprit here.

Download Manager is latest version, should be fine.

Any help welcome!

15.Strange behavior expression map in Cubase 10 6/27/2019 6:34:57 PM
Somehow the keyswitches I use, randomly select the right articulations, or not. What happens is that I can see that the right key is pressed by the expression map in Cubase on the VE PRO instance keyboard, but the articulation activated is another one. When I rewind and play the same line again, then the right articulations are selected. This happens totally random and I simply can't find a way to solve it.
So, Cubase sends the right info, which I can see because the right key is pressed in the VE PRO keyboard, but somehow VE PRO switches to another articulation.
I've checked, but there is no hidden extra key in the expression map. Even with only two articulations like staccato and legato in a simple expression map, it simply won't select the right one from time to time.
Anyone have a suggestion how to get rid of this annoying behavior?

I'm on Windows 10, Cubase 10 (latest update) and VE pro 7
16.Plug-ins not showing iun VE Pro 7 server 5/5/2019 2:53:07 PM
I'm on Windows 10 64-bit. Already did a re-install, but to no avail.
17.Plug-ins not showing iun VE Pro 7 server 5/5/2019 2:14:21 PM

I just ran into the starngething most of my plug-ins do show up in VE PRO 7 stand alone, but not in VE PRO 7 server... The settings are the same, settings are pointing to the right folders f.e., I did a rescan et cetera, but no luck.

How do I solve this?

Yes, just did this and now it works again. My apologies, thanks for your swift reply.

Well, It appears I missed an update on the eLicenser and now it does work well. My apologies for the previous post which was unnecassary.

20.VEpro crashing Cubase 9.5 5/5/2019 1:14:50 PM

I've updated to VE Pro 7 this week and now Cubase 9.5.50 freezes on start-up when VE Pro 7 server is open. The error is said to be with the eLicenser, but all of this worked flawless until I started working with VE PRO 7. Is there a solution for this?

21.Demo of 30 days of the Orchestral Strings (I&II) bundle 2/23/2018 10:51:44 AM

As the header says: I am planning to go the upgrade path (currently own SE 1-4) and would like to demo the Orchestral strings bundle for 30 days. I remember that there was an online possibility to load and play the instrument of your choice (something like trysound by bestservice), but I can't find it. Also there should be a 30 day trial of libraries, but either the requested bundle is not supported for that, or I'm overlooking something.

All help welcome.

22.Note expression high winds SE+ in Cubase 8.5 problem 1/13/2017 1:11:18 PM

Hello Andi,

Thanks again for helping me with this subject.

I can use the VI pro option, but despite the fact that I prefer less instrument tracks in the overall view, the limitations that come with having two voices in one track, are more important than some extra lines. Therefore I will split all combined voices into single tracks for all instruments. The overall view will be a bit more complex, but there are several ways to smoothen that out.

23.Note expression high winds SE+ in Cubase 8.5 problem 1/12/2017 5:31:33 PM

Hi Andi,

Thanks for your reply and your hint for solving the problem.

I think I just found out what the problem is: I combined Flutes 1,2/Oboes 1,2 and Clarinets 1, 2 in one track for every instrument (two voices in one instrument track, like most printed scores). After I split every individual part into seperate tracks the problem was gone, so I think it has to do with two voices in one track causing the problem.

In case combining voices into one track should work, I would highly prefer it, because I wanted to leave some tracks out of the overall view. Unfortunately I suppose this is not the way Cubase and VI work well together.

24.Note expression high winds SE+ in Cubase 8.5 problem 1/11/2017 7:15:49 PM

Update: it seems that Cubase sends the right key-switches to VI, but somehow VI doesn't playback the right articulation/playing style. When I switch to instrument view in VI, I can see the keys on the keyboard layout being 'pressed' by the signals VI receives from cubase. Nevertheless playback is wrong and gives f.e. portamento where legato sustain is needed.

25.Note expression high winds SE+ in Cubase 8.5 problem 1/10/2017 12:04:23 PM

Maybe this has been covered in another thread, but I've been searching the forum and I didn't find the answer to my problem.

I'm working on an orchestral composition in Cubase (8.5.20) using a MIDI rack, using the note expression maps Steinberg provides on their download page. The specific problem I run into is with the High winds note expression map not playing back the right articulation. F.e. perfomance legato where sustained legato is selected, or not changing back in time from staccato to legato and so on.

Of course I can get the same result by entering notes in the Low octave, but for me it works easier using the articulation/dynamics controller lane in the MIDI editor, where you only have to click the desired articulation and Cubase does the rest. All String sections and low winds work as expected, only the high winds section is giving trouble.

Cubase and VI are up to date, I've loaded the right samples (SE+ and note expression map for SE+), double checked every setting, but nothing seems wrong. Since all other instruments work exactly as they should, I suppose it must be a settings problem in the note expression map from Steinberg.

I've already tried to change the behavior of the note expression map by editing the key switches, changing the root key and even in VI I changed the default key switches to the one cubase sends, but nothing works. Is there anybody who knows how to solve this? Any help is highly appreciated.
