1.Dorico Expression Maps for SYNCHRON-ized Solo Strings 8/31/2021 8:07:36 PM

Hi Andi -

I have Vienna Instruments Pro 2 and Solo Strings - but I do not see the Dorico Expression maps.   Is there something else I need?   Thanks.

Eric

Hi Eric -

Is your offer of $1k for solo strings still on the table?   If yes, I am willing to reach out to Daniel @ Dorico and see if it is OK to post this on the Dorico Forum

3.Why not crowd-fund/source the Dorico 3.5 Expression Maps? 11/5/2020 9:36:26 PM

As far as I can tell there is nothing currently available for Solo Strings - that is my need.

I would kick in $100 (US) to get Expression Maps for Solo Strings.

Will these work with Solo Strings?

6.DORICO! 4/3/2020 4:51:40 AM

Dave -

We're in the same boat here.   Dorico is not perfect, but it is so far ahead of Sibelius in usability and reliability that there is no competition.    I do not know how VSL orchestral libraries compare with NotePerformer, but NotePerformer sounds pretty darn good to my ears - and is reasonably priced.

But I do miss the VSL solo strings which are superior to Halion.  As an ex software guy I know that software companies have to juggle priorities.  I could be mistaken (it happens on an all too regular basis) but from where I'm sitting it looks like VSL is making the wrong choice in not prioritizing Dorico development.

Any chance of doing solo strings?

Mike - I have solo strings.   Is there any chance your work is compatible with solo strings?   Thanks!

9.Dorico struggles 11/9/2019 4:26:46 AM

Hi Anand -

I am primarily using Dorico for composing/scoring.  I'm using the built in Halion sounds for solo instruments, Noteperformer for orchestral sounds, and PianoTeq for piano.  The solo Halion sounds are not perfect, but are adequate for my purposes.   I'm hoping that with Dorico 3, VSL (or someone) will come up with expression maps so I can use the VSL solo violins - which are much superior to Halion.

10.Dorico struggles 11/8/2019 6:54:17 PM

agitato - I cannot account for your experience, and if you are happy with Sibelius then by all means stick to it.  But I have to correct some mis-information for the benefit of anyone else viewing this thread.

In Dorico, Ctrl+up/down arrow transposes up/down diatonically in your current key signature.   If you do Ctrl+Shift it transposes chromatically, and Ctrl+Cmd shifts an octave.

11.Dorico struggles 10/30/2019 5:57:22 PM

I swtched from Sibelius to Dorico over 2 years ago   It took me about a month to adjust my workflow, but since then I haven't looked back.  I find Dorico to be much more intuitive and bug free than Sibelius.   On the few occasions where things have not worked the way I expected them to, I have gotten answers on the Dorico User Forum.

If you want an amusing review of SIbelius, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKx1wnXClcI&t=3s

12.Dorico 3 and VSL 9/9/2019 6:13:24 PM

I switched to Dorico several years ago and had to abandon using VSL - so I'm adding my voice to those who have requested VSL - Dorico integration.  I know this cannot be turned around on a dime (that's an American expression) but I hope to see this soon.  Thanks!

13.Slow Glissando 2/24/2017 8:18:28 PM

Or portamento - either would be fine.   I cannot get this working.  I have tried following instructions and changed the start time of the target note by negative amount - but to no avail.

I have tried negative a small amount: -10

I have tried a negative large amount: -256 & -512

But no luck.   You only hear a timy amount of glissando just before the next note plays.

Thanks in advanced for any helpful thoughts, suggestions.

14.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/11/2016 12:10:20 PM

Andi -

I solved this, but no help to the manual.   The solution was to use the Vienna Ensemble device in Sibelius - *NOT* the Vienna Instruments Pro device.

I have to vent some of my frustration here.  It is extraordinarily hard to figure out how things work by looking ast these manuals; and I am a computer professional by trade and am used to dealing with obscure and/or poorly written manuals and instruction sets.  Once you understand how all the different pieces work together it starts to make sense, but for a novice outsider, there is no "road map" to understanding how things work.

Apologies for barrage of messages - but it looks like even though the "Attach files" window isa telling me that I attached 5 files, only 3 are visible.   If you need any of the missing files that I listed in ,y description, plz let me know and I'll re-send them.

And the last "everything" screen shot.

Oh, and one thing I noticed?  In th=is last "everything" shot?  If I click on the lower right VE Pro window, it hides the upper right wiondow & the Sibelius mixer.

The upper window - the one which actually creates the sounds - can only be opened up from within Sibelius.

Afdter I typed everything in, it looks like I cannot attach more files, so here is the next bacth

18.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/11/2016 2:42:54 AM

Andi -  I had done that, but no luck.   I'm doing string quartets.  The best I can do is to get one instrument (e.g. Violin) playing for all 4 instruments - i.e., when I click on the cello a violin sound comes out.  But let's see if we can figure out what I'm doing wrong.   So here are a whole bunch of screen shots.

  1. VE "basic" Instrument configuration
  2. VE "basic" Mixer
  3. VE Pro Instrument configuration
  4. VE Pro Mixer
  5. Sibelius playback Device for VE "basic"
  6. Sibelius playback Sound Sets for VE "basic"
  7. Sibelius playback Device for VE Pro
  8. SIbelius playback Sound Sets for VE Pro

As far as I can tell I have configured VE Pro identically to basic, but I cannot get Sibelius to talk to VE Pro.   As far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with my VE Pro configuration.  When I click on the key indies VE Pro I hear sounds.

After much experimenting and consulting the documentation- plus some luck I clicked on the "Show" button while inside the SIbelius Sound Set window - and lo and behold a whole new VE Pro window opened up - according to the doc this is the "Pro Basic View"   When I tried loading one of the Sound Sets, I finally heard sound.   However, it appears that I can only load one instrument at a time in this view.   So I guess I could creatge 4 playback devices in Sibelius, one for each instrument - but that strikes me as a very clumsy solution.

What am I doing wrong here?

9. Pro Basic View"

10.  "Pro Basic Vie" with instrumant loaded

11.  Everything "Pro"

19.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/10/2016 1:27:07 PM

Andi - I have now spent about 3 hours struggling with Vienna Pro and am unable to things fully functional.   Let me start with a very basic question.  After I downloaded, unzipped, and installed VI Pro, I ws expecting to see something like the first attachment

Instead I am seeing the second

Have I done something wrong?

20.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/9/2016 5:53:13 AM

Andi - Apologies for yet more ignorant questions.

1) I'm going to try out the VI Pro - but when I go to the basket it says I need a Vienna Key.  Does my existing key work or do I need to purchase a new key - even though I'm just trying the demo version.

2) Are there any limitations of the demo version (besides the obvious expiraiton after 30 days)

Thanks, Eric

21.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/4/2016 12:05:54 PM

Andi -

I'm not following your suggestion.  If you look at my example - there are no slurs.  Regardless, I tried a small example of adding a slur in front and not triggering the slur on first pass, but no luck - it still only sounded the top note.

Regarding your other suggestion - so it seems like I have to shell out an additional 145 to get polyphonic legato.   I have Solo Strings 1 & 2.   Will Instruments Pro simply work out of the box with my setup or are there any additional installation and/or configuration steps to get the pieces talking to one another?   E.g., will I have to re-install solo strings and/or do additional tweaks in Sibelius?

Eric

22.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/3/2016 12:17:48 AM

DG -

If by "patch" you mean the build# of Sibelius, then I'm at 8.4.2 build 231.

If you're referring to the Patches tab in the VSL view, then all it says is

- A - String Patches

01 Violin Solo

02 Viola SOlo

03 Cello SOlo

04 Bass Solo

If that's not what you were asking, then could you be more specific?   Thanks!   Eric

23.Solo Strings & Sibelius: Double Stops on Violin not playing 11/2/2016 12:17:45 PM

Double stops are not playing properly on violin for me.   The upper note plays fine, but the lower note seems to play briefly then cuts out.  This is only for Violin.  VIola & Cello are fine.

I'm not quite sure what I'm doing to cause this.  I could be mistaken but it seems like it started after I imported the VSL House Style.

FWIW I'm on SIbelius 8.4.2, Mac Yosemite 10.10.5, VE 5,4,14074 (64 bit).

24.Solo Violin Cuts out when long held notes 1/18/2016 9:29:56 PM

Very belated response here.    To give some background, I am studying composition and have been working with Sibelius for over a year - using Sibelius 7 Sounds.   I do not expect perfect sounds, just a reasonable enough fascimile so I have a sense that my compositions "work".    However, in Sibelius Sounds the violin staccato had an annoying vibrato quality which was highly distracting - and it was made clear to me that this would not be changed.  This led me to VSL Strings.

Now are the quality of the sounds in VSL better than Sibelius?  Absolutely - no doubt about that.

But as a tool to assist in composing?  The fact that you have to tweak settings in the Inspector to get glissando or ties to work, the fact that you have to continually type normal or detache, etc., makes it an inadequate tool for composing.

In other words, following the score is more important to me than absolute realism of the sounds.  I realize that I'm in the minority of VSL users in this regard.

25.Solo Violin Cuts out when long held notes 10/1/2015 1:03:21 AM

Andi - Long delay in response here.  I've been trying to make do with the inadequacies of this product, but this is not going to work.

Firstly, applying the detache is erratic.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.  If there is any pattern to this, I have not figured it out.  This is likely a Sibelius issue.

Seondly, as far as I can tell there is no way to combine detache with non vibrato.   The detache sample always has vibrato.

However, even if there were a way to work around these limitations, marking detache every place where you do not have slurs, and then marking normal whenever you hit a slur is totally impractical for any piece for solo strings more than a few minutes long,.

Unless there are some obvious simple solutions to these problems, it seems that I have spent a lot of money for a very over priced and inadequate tool for use with Sibelius.
