1.macbook pro as slave? 1/14/2016 3:23:36 AM

I still have my older computer, which is a dual core i7 2.6 ghz macbook pro with 4gb ram. If I were to upgrade the ram and make sure the samples are on an ssd, would this computer be adequate as a slave?

2.Best way to us VEP with Logic? 1/11/2016 8:52:34 PM
Which method is most efficient for logic - multiport, event input, or separate instances 16 midi channels each?

3.Software Reinstall From Time Machine Possible? 1/2/2016 9:56:50 PM

I may have to do a firmware update on my main hard drive that could possibly wipe everything off of it. I have absolutely everything backed up though. However, I don't currently have access to the installation CD's on a few of my sample libraries such as omnisphere and stylus rmx. If I did a complete restore with time machine, would this allow me to have all of the software, sample libraries, and plugins ready to go without me having to reinstall all of them?

I had to do a manual reinstall of them once already a few months ago, and it took forever, so I would love it if simply using the restore function on time machine could help avoid the pain of doing all of this all over again.

got it thanks

5.How Do You Organize Your Slave Computer(s) 10/19/2015 4:48:39 PM

When you are using slave computers, would you ever put duplicates of libraries from your main computer's hard drive on your slave computer's drive as well (for example omnisphere on the both the main computer and the slave) or do you generally try to avoid having duplicates of things accross computers so as not to waste space?

Thanks

6.General Slave Computer Questions 10/19/2015 4:40:10 PM

The hard drive on my mac mini (quad core i7, 16gb ram) is filling up, so I'm going to have to get an external hard drive for samples somewhere down the road, if not pretty soon.  But I also still have a macbook from late 2011 (duo core i7, 4gb ram), and am wondering whether to just put the next drive I get in there, and use it as a slave (I'd probably have to upgrade ram too if I went that route). One potential disadvantage I'd see in doing that is that it has less virtual cores, which I thought might be a bottleneck, and made me think I should stick with keeping everything on the more powerful more recent mac mini.

Also, do slave computers work better if their OS is on an SSD, or is it okay for the slave computer's samples to be on an external ssd with a regular speed hard drive for the OS, since I'm only using them for playing the samples?

At what point do you know whether getting a slave would definitely be beneficial to what you're doing? I could probably see myself doing that at some point down the road, but I don't want to sink money into doing that when it turns out everything I'm using can still be done on one computer.

Thanks in advance

7.Kontakt 4 in Yosemite -- Risky? 10/8/2015 5:43:29 AM
Hi,

I understand that Kontakt 4 is not officially supported by 10.10, but I have been able to run it with at least what appears to be no problems in spite of this.  Though I was wondering if this could be potentially harmful to the computer in any way since it's not officially supported.  Please let me know.

Thanks,

8.No sound from event input after pressing play 9/26/2015 9:34:53 PM

When I play an event input track with VEP5 initially, everything works fine.  But once I press playback to listen and then stop playback, I can no longer hear anything when I play on the event input track.  What is causing this, and how can I change it?  I already have a bypassed I/O plugin both on the event input channel and on the main VEP5 plugin channel in Logic.

Thanks

9.unable to make performance view changes within vienna ensemble pro 5 1/28/2015 2:04:10 AM

Every so often I am not able to make changes in the GUI of my Kontakt instruments within Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.  The GUI just freezes, yet the instrument can still be played.  Why is this happening, and what can I do to fix it?

10.how to open logic project without loading vep project 1/28/2015 1:52:59 AM

Whenever I open a logic project after it crashes,  all of my instruments remain on the Vienna Ensemble Pro interface because of the preserve function, so I don't need them to be reloaded again once I restart the Logic Project.  Logic loads this metaframe again anyway when I reopen the project, and then I end up having twice as many instruments as I need.  How do I make it so that when I open a Logic Pro X project, Logic doesn't automatically reload the Metaframe that the project was using?

11.Error writing project file 1/27/2015 11:24:26 PM

When I try to save a project, I get a message saying "Error writing project file."  Why is this happening, and how do I get around it?

14.composition/arranging question 5/6/2014 2:55:55 AM

I'd like to hear how other people go about composing.  Do you tend to compose directly for the instruments of an ensemble, or do you start thinking of basic stuff like melody, harmony and form on one instrument like a piano or guitar and then orchestrate it?  What I really admire about the symphonic pieces by the legendary composers like Debussy and Ravel as well as film composers like Danny Elfman and John Williams is how the instrumentation is constantly morphing.  I want to get better at arranging in this way, but sometimes have a hard time making everything sound unified when I try to divide the theme among different instruments.  Sometimes I'll have a good 30 second section with all the essential parts layered that I'm happy with, but then when I'm making the next section, I have trouble making it fit well with the previous section, and the transition between the two sounds forced to me when I hear the playback in my sequencer.

Would those with more experience mind sharing how they go about composing/ what their process is?  Also, when you get the feeling that a section of music isn't quite complete, do you have any specific strategies for finding out what it's missing?  I ask because I oftentimes find myself playing back the music, scratching my head thinking either something needs to be added, or something needs to be taken away, so I keep fiddling with it until I eventually get to the point where I don't think I need to change it anymore.  This is fine in some cases, but I know there are those who take on projects that require lots of music in short periods of time, so there's probably not loads of time for this kind of trial and error in that scenario.  Are there any strategies you use for making quality music without all the head scratching and trial and error edits described above?  Thanks so much in advance.

15.Demo Reel Question 3/14/2014 3:27:31 PM

For a reel, is it better to have a seperate 3 min reel for each category, like one for movies, one for tv, one for video games, and one for ads, or is it better to combine them all into one reel?

16.vienna ensemble pro with one computer 3/7/2014 3:29:59 PM

But aren't all instruments already on your stage just by loading them all directly into the daw?  I don't see how one would need a seperate application to do that, as that's what daws are for in the first place.

17.First note interrupted by pop 3/7/2014 4:26:23 AM

But this sort of bug doesn't happen when less instruments are loaded.  It only starts once I start building up an epic ensemble.

18.vienna ensemble pro with one computer 3/6/2014 7:50:16 PM

I thought the purpose of VE pro was to take stress off the daw by hosting all vst's outside of it, whether they're in a different computer or in another part of the main computer, so that's why.  Kontakt instruments have they're own player as well though, don't they? And yet people host those in VEP.

I guess if I were to go through with controlling the Mac mini with a less powerful macbook it'd be with network midi.  Do I need a second vienna key for a slave computer?  Does the slave computer need to be hooked up to a monitor as well, or can you see what's going on in the slave just by connecting to it with vep?

19.vienna ensemble pro with one computer 3/6/2014 5:58:31 PM

Also, would I need a seperate vienna key for the slave?  Can I connect to the slave with VEP and then be able to see what's going on the slave on my monitor?  Or does the slave need to be hooked up to a monitor as well?

20.vienna ensemble pro with one computer 3/6/2014 5:51:40 PM

What is "Event Input," and what is "IAC"?  What is Xbench?  Would the macbook that has only 4gb ram be okay to do this if it's just a master computer?  Or would it still need more ram?  Would using VEP with a macbook controlling the mini make things run smoother than running VEP with just the mac mini?

I'm actually not using any VSL libraries.  I'm using East West and Cinesamples libraries and Omnisphere + EZ Drummer.   Thanks for the information.

22.Master - Slave Question 3/5/2014 5:55:18 PM
I have a macbook pro, and was wondering if using that as a master computer to control the mini as a slave would improve processing to a noticeable extent.

The mac mini is a late 2012 2.3 GHz Intel Quad Core Core i7 with 16 gb of ram, a 480 gb ssd, and a 1tb sshd. The macbook pro is a late 2011 duo core i7 with 4gb of ram, and a basic 5200 rpm hard drive.

Given these specs, would the macbook pro be able to control the mac mini via vienna ensemble pro and significantly make processing more efficient for virtual instruments? The virtual instruments I have are Cinesamples stuff and Omnisphere.

Seeing that the slave computer is the one holding the instruments, and the master (macbook) would be the one simply modifying midi data in the daw, will it not be a problem if the master's specs are relatively basic (only 4gb ram, basic hd, etc)?
23.vienna ensemble pro with one computer 3/5/2014 1:12:37 AM

Do I get any significant benefit in having things run more smoothly if I use Vienna Ensemble Pro without a slave (everything on one computer)?

I use a mac mini 2.3ghz i7 with 16gb ram, a 480gb ssd boot drive, and an extra 1 tb hybrid drive.  I don't have a second desktop computer to run as a slave, but I do have a macbook with the basic setup of a normal harddrive and 4gb ram.  Could that macbook be an adequate master computer, and would I gain much by having the macbook control the mac mini as opposed to doing everything on one computer?

I'm asking because in spite of the fact that I have upgraded the mac mini in many ways and setup vienna ensemble pro, I still get audio drop outs.  That leads me to question whether VEP is doing anything at all seeing that it's being used with just one computer.

24.First note interrupted by pop 3/2/2014 8:09:12 PM

Exs instruments, which are playing directly in logic, don't seem to be doing this.

25.First note interrupted by pop 3/2/2014 8:06:39 PM

The sample libraries that make those pops are on the SSD.
