1.a3/a4 changes stuck on specific keyswitch in Sibelius 5/8/2020 1:55:27 PM

Yes, maybe I wasn't as clear as I could. For me as well, it's only the default sound that is weird. It may involve other instruments but these were the ones I encountered during work yesterday.

I didn't think of using "tutti", I will use that in the meantime!

Btw, can this be expected to be fixed in a future patch?
2.a3/a4 changes stuck on specific keyswitch in Sibelius 5/7/2020 1:12:58 PM

Hi,

I couldn't find any topic with this same problem. I hope I can get some help here.

I'm trying to use "a4" and "a3" on horns and trumpets in Sibelius with the Synchronized Special Edition.

Sibelius changes to the correct midi channel but doesn't use the correct keyswitch. With a4 on the horn part, it's stuck on legato as the default sound. With a3 on the trumpet, it's stuck on major 2nd trill as the default.

Changing to other articulations works, so the problem is just that the default for some reason is those I just mentioned.

I have the Sibelius Sound Set and have imported the House Style. The manual sound set is set up correctly. I have of course double checked that the midi channels are correct in Vienna Ensemble.

Btw, I'm using Sibelius 2020.3 and the latest version of Vienna Ensemble and the Synchron player.

3.Staccato repetitions with SY-SE in SIbelius 10/19/2019 11:02:01 AM

Hi,

I read the manual for Sibelius optimization and I understand we have to write "1" above each note to get the staccato repetition sound.

When entering a "1" in staff text, it goes back to regular staccato on the notes after. Is there any way to make it "stick" (like some kind of "pedal"-message)?

It's a bit cumbersome when you have a lot of these staccato repetitions to write "1" above each 16th-note, even if they're hidden.

Looking forward to this, but won’t be able to buy it for some months.

Edit: being stupid...

Yes they have stated somewhere (I think in this thread actually) that they will let us know.

6.Dimension Strings too much for me? (and my computer?) 9/21/2017 10:01:38 PM

From my experience, Dim. Strings benefit from being loaded from a fast SSD. But a trick that some people use is to turn off Velocity X-fade since using that bumbs up the voices in use a lot, which can result in drop outs when using many tracks.

My RAM usage is 1288MB in VI PRO when enabling all of the patches for the violins. I have the sample preload at 16384.

I can't answer if it'll work on your computer (I think so though) but if you're going to upgrade then sure, why not? Dimension Strings sound great. The Divisi possibility is awesome.

Would probably layer well with the Spitfire Chamber Strings as well.

Do you have VI PRO? Among other things it lets you disable cells you aren't using, which might be a good feature for you as well.

7.AMD Ryzen thoughts? 5/13/2017 6:41:06 PM

I appreciate your feedback! It seems that Ryzen will be a big leap forward for AMD so maybe these reliability issues won't be present. Some kind of bottlenecking seems to be happening at the moment, according to this review: http://www.scanproaudio....en-first-look-for-audio/

If this changes, I might look into AMD in the future. At the moment I'm sitting comfortably with my I7-6700 but more threads for about the same price would be pretty nice.

8.AMD Ryzen thoughts? 4/28/2017 8:02:43 AM
I am curious how VSL works with the new AMD Ryzen cpus. Seems to be an affordable way to get more processing threads for MIR, and large projects. According to benchmarks they seem to do well against Intel in productivity tasks.

So has anyone taken the plunge and tried it? If so, what is your experience with it?
If anyone from VSL reads this, have you tested it yourselves?
9.Using Cubase Expression Maps in Dorico? 3/10/2017 4:46:36 PM

A bit of a status update on this, for those interested.
As of 1.0.30, Dorico is starting to work better with Vienna. I made an Expression map for flute with staccato, "natural" (set to sustain) and legato. All also had dynamics set to CC2 (Set to x-fade in VI) and it played back remarkably well. The Expression Map Setup window is a bit buggy though and sometimes changes doesn't stick.

Even crescendos work but it seems you have to input all of the dynamic info in the same pop-up (as in writing for example "p<f" for a cresc. from piano to forte, rather than inputting one dynamic and adding a crescendo later). So the dynamics work but could be less buggy, I would like to be able to get hairpins to playback even though I add them later on, but it's ok.

I'm looking forward to future updates of Dorico and hopefully some premade VSL expression maps when Dorico has gotten more fleshed out.

10.Using Cubase Expression Maps in Dorico? 11/26/2016 1:19:18 PM

There is an option to import Cubase Expression Maps, but I get an error when trying to import the VSL Expression Maps, but it might just be my computers. (Happening to me on both Mac and PC).

Trying to set up my own Expression Maps for VSL are very buggy and for some reason only the tenuto keyswitch is working. Dynamics seem to work though (but I didn't get crescendos to play back). As I said this happens on both my PC and Mac so I guess it's most likely the program being bugged.

11.Dimension Brass 1 vs Brass 1 11/16/2016 1:04:55 AM
Of all my VSL I am most happy with Dimension Brass. The a4 (and a8) horns, a3 (and a6) trumpets and a3 trombones from the SE aren't that far off when doing unison stuff and that would apply to Brass I as well. Dim. Brass really shines at divisi of course. They work for solo passages as well, but unfortunately you sometimes get some bleed from the other players. Having said that, I still think they sound better for solos than the triple and viennese horns.

I have VSL SE, Dim. Brass and a few instruments from Brass I & II. I wouldn't really have any issue using just Dim. Brass most of the time. The only thing lacking would be the basses since the Low Brass has a lot of bleed and feels more meant to be played as a tutti. This means a bass trombone and a tuba would be needed if you need detailed brass bass lines.

This is all my own opinions of course!
12.Anyone Successfully Selecting VI Pro Matrices By Program Change? 11/4/2016 11:35:14 PM
You need to use the VST2 version and not VST3. It's the one without three dashes when you select the plugin. And it seems Cubase counts from 1 while VI Pro counts from 0 in program changes. Just a heads up. :)
13.Dorico 10/20/2016 10:48:36 AM

I found that you can right click on a vst plugin and there's the option "Setup Plugin Playing Techniques" but clicking it doesn't do anything. I'll be waiting eagerly for that button to work. Until then I guess I'll just load sustain patches and write pads.. ;)

14.Dorico 10/20/2016 8:13:20 AM

It works but there is no way to use keyswitches (apart from maybe writing them in on a separate staff as notes), unless I am stupid and missed something big here. But they have clearly stated that the product isn't complete and will recieve a lot of updates in the coming months.

15.Steinberg new notation software "Dorico" and VSL, is a wedding announced ? 10/14/2016 9:15:13 AM
It seems to include 8 standard articulations, yes. That doesn't have to mean that you will be able to only use 8 patches of VSL. It's got to do with the notation side of things. But it probably means a lot of special types of articulations will come in an update.
16.UPDATE: MAS Version for Vienna Ensemble PRO 5 available 6/17/2016 2:33:43 PM

Hi

The web site says that the regular VE also has MAS support now but when installing the latest version it does not install any MAS plugin. When will VE get this?

17.[solved ]VSL instruments stuttering and unplayable 5/15/2016 8:29:32 AM

I have the same problem (I use an external usb 3 for some of the samples).
Could you please add what was the solution? Might be helpful in the future if more people have this issue.

18.For my own clarity on cc11 vs timbre-exp 4/28/2016 8:35:30 PM

I generally use CC11 for expression within a given phrase and set the velocity (controlling velocity x-fade with CC2) to the most suitable dynamic and sometimes (but not everytime) I do a velocity x-fade to help the feeling of crescendo/diminuendo. When I have the time to really sculpt a phrase I use the dynamic patches.

You seem to know the limitations of velocity and velocity x-fades. As far as I know there's no other solutions than the ones you mention. There is a free script for Kontakt somewhere to enable velocity x-fade between velocity layers, if that's what you need. I think the author is called Nils.

19.Questions in the course of studying "Special Edition Vol 1 Demo" 4/25/2016 4:20:41 PM
Regarding the piano, yes you either have to fake it by making the notes longer or using the sustain pedal (CC64).

Regarding mixing, I can recommend getting one of the MIRx reverbs that you activate inside VI
(not sure if it's only usable in VI PRO though). There's also a list with volume settings for all instruments in the MIRx manual, which is set in relation to the loudest instrument (Bass Drum). This is helpful but I'm not sure if it's available if you haven't bought it.
20.Stuttering playback when VE is in background 4/24/2016 10:26:59 AM

I have started encountering a weird issue. I moved most of my VSL samples (all except Dimension Strings) to an SSD which I have placed in an usb 3.0 enclosure.

The issue is that when I am working in Cubase, the playback starts to stutter and cut off. But the strange thing is that when I open up the VE window it goes away. As long as I keep the VE window up I don't experience these stutters.

I have tried changing the preload to a low and a high number and it doesn't really affect this. It also doesn't matter if I have few or many instruments.

I have never experienced this before so I am starting to think it's because of the USB SSD. Any idea what's causing this? It is strange though that everything works perfectly as long as the VE window is in view.

Best Regards,

Jörgen

Edit: This also happens in Logic.

That is correct, but not for the legato patch. In the full libraries you get half tone samples and a few more velocity layers on short and long notes (but not the legatos).

I did not find that these extras made a night and day difference for me, although an improvement.

And yes you get a discount towards standard and full libraries after SE. I'm working my way up one instrument at a time, although it's a bit more expensive in the long run.

I would definitely start with SE and move on when the need arise.

For some it seems like the basic articulations are fine, but I like having as few limitations as possible. I have all of 8dio's ww's, Berlin ww's, EW ww's and CineWinds, but from what I can hear, none of them seem to offer the kind of flexiblity VSL ww's do.
I know what you mean about using an articulaion for something other than what it was intended for. I recently used a tremelo patch to add definition to a fast string line - it actully worked. I just mixed it in a tad.
I think buying the full Woodwinds I library is the way to go. I head the music theory program at a college, and sometimes I will do a quick mockup of a student composition so they can hear what their piece sounds like. Their compositons typically feature a solo instrument so I like having as many articulaions as possible.
Matteo, I am glad you mentioned the arpeggios and scale runs. Although one can play those in without a special patch, they do sound incredible.
Thanks again for the replies, it was helpful. I know the woodwinds are fairly old, I haven't heard any libraries that sound better overall.
Cheers,
Aaron

You do sound like a pro user but I'd still recommend going with Standard first, since you prefer few articulations. If mockup speed is a factor then I'd keep in mind that the extended has articulations that might mostly be used if you have the time to really sculpt the individual parts.

I do not at all regret buying my full instruments but it's not night and day compared to SE/SE+. Just thought I'd give another perspective. :)

But is there a way tostandardise 'keyswitches' across patches without getting clashes? (So that C1 is always staccato...C2 legato etc.)
eg.. I set all the 'keyswitches' to the left hand C1 area of keyboard...but then as soon as I change to a 'bass' instrument there are clashes with the keys needed to play the instrument and the keys that are keyswitches....?

The standard in the premade presets and matrices that comes with the standard/extended instruments is that C1-B1 is keyswitches for most instruments except the ones in low bass, like Contrabass. Those have the keyswitches at C6-B6. I'm writing from the top of my head, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also one way of working that I personally find intuitive when sketching (or producing film music with few articulations) is having one midi track for each articulation. One for flute legato, one for flute staccato, etc. Some professional composers prefer this way.

Using the iPad remote app or Cubase Expression Map is also handy.

Have yet to try Lemur but seems great.

There are subtle differences in the voicing balance and obviously as I'm using a different hall, different samples, etc. But ultimately, they are both more than adequate in how they sound. The real question comes down to how flexible the library is then (which VSL easilywins at IMO).

So the first example is Spitfire and the VSL, and the opposite in the second and third example? I can't really tell the libraries apart in the examples.
This makes me glad that I decided to keep investing in VSL instead of going for Spitfire, for example. The flexibility with Vienna is hard to beat! Being a classically trained composer I have a hard time settling for the broad brushes of only staccatos and sustains (exaggerating of course).
I only use MIRx at the moment which serves me well but these examples make my credit card itch.

Very interesting to hear these examples!

I might be wrong but I own the Full Special Edition which includes Portamento, which is most likely what Jörgen is after. In the full collections there is perf_portamento in all of the orchestral strings, solo strings and chamber strings, some of them also contain the zigane portamento, also the appassionata strings (except the basses) have perf_portamento.

Technically the transition starts on Note-On, so what you have to do in a DAW is to place the notes before the moment where the target note should be reached, in a notation program this is doable but in a less intuitive way.

Actually I need even and slow glissandos. But I appreciate the help!
