1.Does the new Synchron Fazioli have una corda/fourth pedal samples 12/11/2022 6:06:30 PM

Best, Michael

Does that scoop on the hood of your car mean it has a supercharger?

Sorry, trade secret.  Can't tell you that.  It's "internal information."  Just buy it and enjoy the ride.

By now, VSL's refusal to answer makes it obvious that it's not sampled.  Which is fine.  Just answer your customers honestly.

How can you say that what you do in your process does not influence the quality of your library when all your advertising touts your magic robot and your hundreds of thousands of samples and other aspects of your process... when it's to your advantage to publish that information.  And how come publishing THAT information about your sampling process does not prejudice your mutual trust with Fazioli whereas answering legitimate customer questions about YOUR product would?

I personally don't care.  I'll either buy the library or I won't.  But it seems unbecoming to reply to your customers as if they are idiots.

BTW, this post is intended as constructive criticism.

2.Fazioli - does it have una corda samples? 12/6/2022 11:02:02 PM

I can't tell from the description:

"What’s more, by combining the una corda pedal with the fourth pedal pianists can increase the variations of soft colors the F308 is able to offer."

Does this mean the Fazioli actually has una corda samples, or is it still the bit of muffling EQ as with the other Synchron pianos?

Thanks for any info.

3.MISSION COMPLETED: Moving from eLicenser to iLok 9/10/2022 4:30:43 AM

If I buy another synchron piano library, that library will come with an iLok license. So, my question is: can both libraries co-exist in the same machine, or the moment I install the second library (iLok one) I will also be forced to install the iLok license of the d-274 and I will have no more offline library (unless I get the iLok dongle, of course)?

Hi, Vag,

My understanding is No:  https://www.vsl.info/en/tutorials/faqs/ilok#ilokelcc

4.Sostenuto pedal on synchron pianos 9/1/2022 3:07:14 AM

Hey, Mike, I just mindlessly parrot the terminology I've heard

If you want to do some more reading, this was a thread involving some experiments with VSTs - specifically trying to start with a silent keypress that's held with the sostenuto pedal.
Several VSTs required a script (because of the strange way my Avant Grand N3's extended MIDI works).  But I could not get the VSL to work because of the inability to have it receive a key-depressed signal without creating sound.

This is another thread mentioning various VSL topics.  The discussion about lack of "silent key" capability in VSL begins around this post and subsequent: http://forums.pianoworld.com//ubbthreads.php/topics/3225690/re-vsl-synchron-steinway-d-resonance.html#Post3225690

And for reference, this is for the script that worked with the N3's MIDI (but as mentioned, not for VSL):  https://community.cantabilesoftware.com/t/midi-translation-perhaps-like-disklavier-xp/7312/15

5.Sostenuto pedal on synchron pianos 8/31/2022 12:41:05 AM

LOL...   Your thread title is a bit misleading, Mike.  You're really asking about the "silent key" (or lack of same) issue.

I think you want to join the chorus of voices in this thread (particularly the last page or so):

https://www.vsl.co.at/community/posts/t48702-Synchron-Piano-sympathetic-resonance-and-silent-key

There are also some threads on the pianoworld forum about VSL's lack of implementation of this functionality.

Cheers,

Jane

6.[SOLVED] Record piano synchron using ASIO low latency drivers on PC 8/14/2022 12:48:04 AM

With Audacity, by default you'd be recording a microphone or some other sound coming INTO your computer, not sound being generated by your computer.

The problem is that Windows audio is oriented to making sound for YOU (to be played on headphones or speakers).  Not for making sound and then directing it back into the computer.

Search google for "audio loopback" to find some ways of doing this.

I use an external Focusrite Scarlett audio interface that has built-in hardware loopback.  (Not all of their models include loopback).

I'm sure other people here can give you advice on loopback (other than telling you to buy a Mac   )

7.VSL External SSD issue 7/6/2022 9:56:54 PM

Is your external drive formatted as FAT or NTFS (if Windows)?

8.VSL External SSD issue 7/6/2022 9:16:49 PM

Just a wild guess - did you buy iLok zero downtime?

If so, if you have their "TLC" option switched on you need to use the license manager to "refresh" your licenses every 90 days.  If the licenses have "expired" VSL will not see the libraries.

Just asking because you say it "used to work" and has now stopped...

9.Synchron Player doesn't see samples 7/6/2022 8:38:33 PM

Hey, if this were easy, Andy, think of how many IT people would be out of jobs!

When you say that the "Synchron player" doesn't show up in iLok manager... I only use the Synchron pianos but the player doesn't show in the manager, only the libraries do.

For each library, there is an option as to whether it is attached to a dongle or to the cloud.

Are you looking at the top item in the license manager for all licenses, or at what's been enabled in your cloud account in the lower left section?

If your libraries don't show as available in your iLok account, have you checked in your VSL profile to make sure it says they've been transferred to iLok?

10.Synchron Player doesn't see samples 7/6/2022 5:16:45 PM

Grasping at straws here as I only use a single computer.

Open iLok's FAQ https://www.ilok.com/#!support/help/102029544

Select "How does the iLok Cloud work?" and then "What happens if open my iLok Cloud on two different computers?"

"Only one iLok Cloud Session can be used at a time per iLok Account. If an iLok Cloud is opened on a different computer, the first iLok Cloud session will be logged out."

So maybe you need to create separate accounts for each computer you're using???

Maybe contact iLok support and ask what they suggest.

I don't have ZDT, but have read this notice on the ilok website  https://www.ilok.com/#!zdt-coverage

If you enable the TLC option, your iLok will need to be seen by our server at least once every 90 days for a Refresh operation. This Refresh enables your licenses to continue working for an additional 90 days. If the iLok is not seen by our server by the end of the Refresh period, the licenses on it will cease to authorize your software. Using iLok License Manager to do the Refresh operation will immediately reinstate your licenses.

12.Synchron pianos, silent key press and sympathetic resonance, how to 4/14/2022 5:05:20 AM

1) We still don't have a "silent key" yet.

2) The algorithm that calculates the Sympathetic Resonance will hopefully be improved in the future. I agree it is not as good as it could be.

Unfortunately I don't have a time-frame for this yet, but we have those requests on our list.

Best,
Paul

Glad to hear there's a possibility of "silent key" in the future, Paul!  Since that's "just" a matter of allowing something like a velocity of 1 to be trapped and not create a sound, seems to me that it would not have as sophisticated coding requirements as would creating a better sympathetic resonance algorithm.

I realize that at the moment your programmers must be pretty busy getting Vienna Assistant into shape, though...

13.Please help me solve the problem CONCERT D-274 Full Library 3/21/2022 10:29:36 PM

Are you talking about playing live (where latency is more a concern) or rendering a project?

My impression is that CPU is at least as important as RAM for VSL.

VSL posted a video a while back with a suggestion for rendering - spread the mics over multiple threads and set the latency high (buffer 1024):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J33_Suyct98&t=3s

14.Vienna Assistant bug and work-around 3/21/2022 2:55:49 AM

I downloaded the Vienna Assistant, set it to download-only-mode, and attempted to download a library.

The software informed me that my hard disk only has 1.01 TB, and the 28.69GB download will not fit.

Finally I got lucky and tried setting a path for the "Default library location" (which I had left blank, because I was just planning to do the downloads for now).  After that, it decided that it could indeed squeeze its 28.69GB into my TB.

Not very informative error messages, VSL...

Cheers,

Jane

15.Synchron pianos, "unrealistic" attack for soft playing? 12/14/2021 4:48:53 PM

I know you mentioned having the Vienna Imperial, but you should try the new Bösenddorfer Imperial Grand. After having owned all of VSL's pianos, I find the BI Grand to be the most natural and warm sounding library. The attack seems to be well balanced along with the rest of the piano. I find I don't need to make any individual key adjustments. It's my favorite library to play.

God Bless,

David

But, David - he's talking about SOFT playing.

The Vienna Imperial that he already owns has true una corda samples... something that's really valuable for Chopin, Debussy, and various other composers where subtle tone color is important.

Unfortunately, the Synchron pianos have a lot more microphone positions and samples, but VSL did not include una corda samples in the new instruments and the soft pedal gives hardly any noticeable effect.

Cheers,

Jane

16.Feature suggestion - piano mixer graphic 9/22/2021 3:23:38 PM

As a new user of these pianos, the number of microphone options is a bit overwhelming.

I find myself consulting the layout image in the documentation.

It would be handy to have a button on the mixer screen that would pop up and display the correct version of that graphic, depending on which instrument is loaded.

Thanks for your consideration.

Jane

17.feature suggestions for Synchron Pianos 9/17/2021 5:08:19 PM

Thank you, Paul!

Actual samples would be preferable, even if those were only available on one of the close microphones.

But since you're presently making the existing "soft pedal" through some kind of processing rather than with actual samples, perhaps it would at least be possible to make that somewhat adjustable?  That would seem a lot less difficult than adding another set of samples after the products have already been released.

The search for the ideal instrument...   Yours have the best samples I've heard.  Other products have advantages in terms of licensing flexibility, "playability", configuration flexibility, etc.  If only it were possible to combine all the good features into one!

Thanks for listening!

Reviving this old thread.  I just installed the D274 a few days ago.

While I'm liking the sound very much, I was shocked to discover the lack of una corda samples.  And whatever una corda "effect" there is is much too subtle for my taste.

I realize that solo classical piano may not be the primary audience for this product (when you sell an entire orchestral panoply).  But for those of us who like to try to create ethereal moments from the Berceuse or Barcarolle the different texture of una corda is really missed.

Even my 10 year-old Synthogy American D has una corda samples.

It seems a shame to cripple what is perhaps the highest-priced piano library available in this way.   Especially since so many other aspects of the library are well executed.

Cheers,

Jane (who is a million kilometers from being a "professional")
