1.Synchron Player (iLok) randomly missing all Perform controls on load 8/31/2022 6:49:34 PM

I see there was a hotfix related to "Recently saved user presets could not be opened" -- I am not sure if that refers to this issue or not.  I tried upgrading to 1.2.174 but I am still seeing the same issue.  (If 1.2.174 did fix this issue, perhaps because I saved my project using 1.2.171, it saved broken preset data and I need to load from a backup from before 1.2.171?)

[edit: I tried loading from a backup saved a few days ago using 1.2.174 and it seemed to load okay]

I am seeing the same problem (only Perform parameter that shows is Volume, and the background of the Synchron player is the default one instead of the library-specific one.)

I am on iLok Synchron 1.2.171.  But some differences: I am still on Cubase 12.0.30 (build 286). Windows 10, 64GB RAM.

Here it is.  (I was wondering if someone had already figured out how to set up volume for combining Synchronized libraries + MIR Pro 3D with Synchron direct to output, but the answer is we just have to adjust the volumes ourselves.)

4.MIR 3D: Stereo-MIR 3D HOA 8/16/2022 10:32:16 PM

Thank you for that explanation Dietz!  That really helps set some basic expectations and understanding of what is newly available and the significance of the types of microphones.

(It might be helpful to have that sort of info in a Microphones 101 learning area on the MIR product page or some knowledgebase page.  Though for all I know maybe it already is.)

It is also very welcome to see two new MIR Pro 3D youtube videos today that help guide me around and make me more comfortable with what's going on.  (And the steep discount on dearVR makes it interesting to consider!)

Are you doing any surround/3d/binaural, or just the classic stereo mics and output from MIR Pro 3D?

I'm curious how much stereo has improved with MIR Pro 3D now that the roompacks have been upsampled to 3D.

Then there is this binaural 3D demo which sounds fantastic and tantalizing:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ktkqvABmqA

And Dietz and others say how great 3D is.  So I am also trying to wrap my head around how much it might be worth it to explore various amounts of 3D and how much each of these adds, even for people stuck with targeting stereo speakers and/or headphones:

  • 3D to stereo downmix within MIR Pro
  • 3D to 7.(1).4 or 5.0.4 to stereo downmix using some other approach
  • Raw 3rd order ambisonics (16-ch) to binaural (I'm trying this using Cubase's HRTF but it sounds like a mess so I don't think I have it set up properly yet.  Or maybe Cubase is inferior/limited compared to dear VR.)
  • (If Binaural sounds really good on headphones, how bad would it sound on speakers?)

(I still have a lot of experimenting to do to try to answer these questions for myself, but I'm always glad to get the insights of people with experienced ears.)

7.MIR Pro 3D: Factory Presets vs Natural volume (and CC7 Master Volume) 8/15/2022 6:38:07 PM

Thank you, Dietz. That makes sense.

MIR aside, is there a reason why Syncron/Synchronized presets have different CC7 Volume defaults?  Were they balanced in relationship to some standard (either across the board, or within their own library), or should we not take these defaults into consideration?

Synchron examples of CC7 defaults: (VelXF)

  • Strings Pro 1st Violins: 71
  • Strings Pro Violoncellos: 95

Synchronized examples of CC7 defaults:

  • Special Edition Violin I PLUS: 57
  • Dimension Strings 1st Violins full: 71
  • SYzd Woodwinds Flute ensemble: 90

I added a clarification in my original post:

'Synchron libraries are going direct to output with no MIR Pro 3D, and the Synchron-ized libraries are going through MIR Pro 3D to try to match the acoustics of Synchron libraries in Syncron A wide.'

VSL provided a dry mixer preset for Synchron-ized libraries (which use VI recordings) called "99 MIR Uncompressed", which I understand is intended for sending to MIR.

9.MIR Pro 3D: Factory Presets vs Natural volume (and CC7 Master Volume) 8/14/2022 7:36:13 AM

Hi,

I'm pretty novice at mixing/panning and trying to take advantage of the defaults VSL has put in to help learn how a balanced orchestra is supposed to sound to give myself a baseline.  I'm trying to get a "factory preset" sound at Synchron A wide, with a mix of Synchron-ized (mixer preset 99 MIR Unprocessed) and Synchron libraries using MIR Pro 3D.

[EDIT for clarification: Synchron libraries are going direct to output with no MIR Pro 3D, and the Synchron-ized libraries are going through MIR Pro 3D to try to match the acoustics of Synchron libraries in Syncron A wide.]

Question 1: Some Synchron-ized player presets have some CC7 Master volume defaulted to 71 (and others at other values).  Is this intentional?  If I want to use these in MIR 3D Pro with the factory presets, should I always be cranking CC7 this to the max (127), or some other value, or is there some reason to keep it at whatever the Synchron player preset gives me, 71 in this case?

(And what's the common/best practice for CC7?  In the past I always cranked CC7 to max and used CC11 expression for "volume" alongside CC1 for VelXF, and then Cubase DAW channel volume as a last resort if I needed more headroom.)

(I noticed CC7 is being discussed elsewhere in regards to this value not being saved and/or loaded with projects.  I haven't tried to confirm this myself yet, but perhaps there is a bug with reverting it to the value from the preset when loading the preset upon project load?  Example of how to reproduce CC7 71: simply go to Synchron player PRESET and double-click "02b Violin 1 full VelXF".  CC7 gets changed to 71.  This is without closing and reloading the project.  Still happens after I disconnected MIDI inputs from Cubase.  I think I noticed other values in other presets.)

Question 2: The new factory presets in MIR Pro 3D seem like quite a handy feature, but they seem to have a much higher volume than "Natural volume".  Why?  Does this mean the new presets are 'unnatural'?  If I want a balance Synchron-ized plus Synchron sound, should I use volume from factory presets, or "natural volume"? (or neither if it still requires some work to get a proper mix?)  Bonus question: should I turn on distance-dependant volume scaling and air absorption filter?

My best guess: the VSL team has been working on the presets more recently to make them sound somewhat ok in MIR Pro 3D, with more of a focus on positioning than volume, because a lot of numbers are the same volume (-6) whereas it looks like a lot of care went into doing per-instrument natural volumes. (Though I notice Dietz said some natural volumes are off, implying they need to be corrected on VSL's end.)

Any thoughts or guidance on this for trying to mix Synchron-ized libraries with Synchron in MIR 3D Pro?  (And also Q1 is relevant here: should I be cranking CC7 to the max?)

Thanks!

It is nice to have a softer piano.

The Ethereal preset is inspiring!  (People should at least try that one!)

11.MIR Pro plugin window size (Cubase Pro 11) 10/12/2021 6:02:46 AM

I am trying out MIR Pro 24 Demo on Windows, as a plugin (not in VEP) and it was super tiny.  I'm still on an ancient Cubase (6.0.7) since my money keeps going to VSL instead of Steinberg

I got the size more reasonable by right clicking the properties for the Vienna MIR Pro 5 shortcut (by right clicking it when it's open in the taskbar), going to Compatibility tab, click Change high DPI settings, then check Program DPI, check Override high DPI scaling behavior, and select Scaling performed by: Application.

I have a mix of 3 monitors, and wonder if that confuses things, with one at 4K resolution and 150% scaling, and the others at 1920x1200 portrait and 100%.  I wonder if it depends which one has "Make this my main display" checked in Display settings.

Currently you can't use Note Expression with the Vienna Instruments (or VI Pro).

Does 'Note Expression' work when there is only one note played at a time in the track?  If so, I would think it may at least be a little bit helpful in keeping CC and notes together if you moved them around.

(I'm also curious whether VI or VI Pro may be upgraded to VST3.5 to work with Note Expression.)

13.VSL Expression Maps for Cubase 5.0.1 and higher (UPDATE) 4/22/2009 4:43:25 AM

Awesome!  I was hoping this would come.  I just quickly tried it out for SE and at first glance it looks great! (And I'm looking forward to the mapping for the App. Strings I.)

For people wondering what the point is, for me, it looks like it will let me:

  a) enter articulations in english (either on a per-note basis, e.g. note accents, or as a musical direction, e.g. play portato until further notice), rather than doing the map in my mind to matrix selection + matrix row selection + matrix column selection + a-b selection (for each instrument, which may have a different mapping!), and

  b) move a part from one instrument to another
without having to redo the (up to) 4 dimensional selection of a VI cell (matrix, row, column, a-b). (Of course, one still should be aware of the kinds of patches supported by each instrument) and

  c) unexpected but possibly interesting: have support for midi articulations: increase velocity (accent), shorten/lengthen note (staccato staccatissimo), etc.  I saw VSL put some of these in their map.  Perhaps one could also do other technical tweaks to VSL to do things like turn Attack & Release up and down, or tweak the filter or crossfader.

And I can do this in a lane in the in-place editor, where I mostly work, which is great (or without it, I can still at least edit the per-note attributes in the event bar).   It takes up some screen space in order to expand the articulations controller lane to be readable, but on the other hand I save the space for lanes I'd otherwise need to manage 2-3 CC lanes for row/column/a-b along with the mental anguish of things like making sure my controller value goes from the 58-64 range down to 0-12 and back again etc., and that the CC events match the timing of notes & parts.  I'm new to Cubase/VSL and the world of composing and maybe I'm missing things (like I'm wondering if keyswitches are easier to manage than CC's), but if I spend less time fiddling with CC's and keyswitches, I think that qualifies as being more valuable than a gimmick to me.  (Like Rainer said, a great feature for composing into the sequencer.)

(I don't have any use at the moment for scoring/notation, although it is nice that the articulations are integrated should that change.)

It looks like the Cubase 5.0.1 patch added the ability to control extra controllers, which is great! (Maybe VSL gave Steinberg a nudge? :) )  I don't know yet if there is a way for Cubase to do all this at once (or if it's needed): set the matrix selector keyswitch (maybe the CC101-112 could be used instead), set the Matrix row keyswitch, set the matrix column controller, and set an A-B keyswitch or controller.  From the docs it sounds like it since now it supports 2 keyswitches plus 2 controllers?

Thanks Andi and VSL for putting these expression maps together!

Jared

14.VST Expression -- to be supported by Vienna Instruments, Garritan, and others 4/5/2009 10:13:23 PM

There will be Expression Maps for some of our products (e.g. Special Edition), though I have to say that we are a bit restricted here, because at the current state Cubase Expression doesn't offer all the possibilities of switching articulations we could wish for. Wink

Hi!  Any idea when these Expression Maps may be available?  I have Special Edition (Full) and Cubase 5 and wondering what the best long-term way to set up dozens of instruments.   What I'm doing now seems a bit tedious -- not bad but I don't want to waste my time doing it any more than I have to.    So an expression map or other pointers would be appreciated!

Keyswitches don't seem as nice (or pure) to me as controllers, so I don't know what the Cubase folks were thinking, but if it's the best way, I guess I don't care.

Thanks,
Jared
