You shouldn't do that I think.

OK, thanks for the advice. I'll look into it.

Thanks, Martin!

I take it that there is no such license for the other editions, then.
4.VSL in the classroom 12/9/2005 12:48:06 AM
Hello VSLers,

Is there some provision for licensing VSL for use in a teaching situation?
Obviously many students would need to have hands-on experience with the product, and this seems to contravene the licence agreement I have for the VSL products I use

Any insights on this would be appreciated.

What's a "pupitre"?

Evan Evans

French for "desk" (in a string section.)
Literally "pulpit" I think.

HB didn't write one, did he?

He didn't play the piano either.

And he's still considered one of the great orchestrators - what a hero!!!

Cancel that - I found the files in a "safe" place.
10.First Edition Looped Instruments 7/6/2005 10:22:15 PM
Hello all,

I remember downloading and using some looped string instruments for First Edition, but now cannot find the files or any reference to them on this site.

Maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing, but if anyone knows where these can be had, please let me know.

Isn't that right?

I sent in a request to MM to up the number of MIDI channels.
I tend to think that customizing the EXS instruments is a completely viable way to get what you're after though in the interim.

Is this the address from which you receive quizzical responses?

I gave up on it years ago, so I don't remember, but I'll try sending here and we can hope...

Michael, do you know who to write to at MM to ask about more Ports?
I've had a miserable time in the past trying to request features. The response I usually got was "We don't understand your question" Angry

This and other users instruments are on the "NEW unOfficial EXS24mkII VSL User File Exchange" accessed from the EXS24 Forum page.
(I can't figure out how to post a link to the page, sorry)

Nick,
That would indeed be a fantastic time-saver!
I need this a lot actually.
Well, I feel less stupid for not knowing how to do it, since it seems it can't be done.

John

In that case I would do some editing in the EXS instruments to make one or more "super-percussion" instruments which contain many more sounds than eg just a triangle - sort of like a "Basic Percussion Set, but expanded with keyswitches
Then you have the hassle of letting Finale know how to talk to these new EXS instruments etc. but I really don't think you'll be getting more than 64 channels flowing from Finale to Logic anyhow.

Now that I'm thinking of it, surely it would be possible to create an EXS instrument to be a "virtual percussionist", using only instruments that the real player will actually be playing. You'd have to be careful to avoid simultaneous instruments accessed by different keyswitches though, but careful consideration of KS as opposed to range selection of sounds should work

Perhaps percussion is not the best place to be economising.
Have you looked at Evan Evans's expanded Violin instrument? You could load up pretty much EVERY Pro edition violin ens sound in 3 or 4 EXS instruments - it's a lot of keyswitching, but hey that's what computers are good at!

I'm planning to do this myself at the next computer upgrade (Spring 2005?), but maybe I can goad you into doing all the work and then sending me the files [Wink]

John

Yes, that's useful!
Do you have a tip for re-assigning the Audio Object to EXS Instrument 65 not 1, 66 not 2 etc, after copying?
It always looked as though the Apply Buffer Template to thing will do this but I have never been successful with that.

John

Spectronics & Guitarrig crashed in Logic6. Upgraded to 7. Re installed
Atmoshphere's,
Guitarrig and RMX. Midi records fine for Atmosphere's and RMX. Guitarrig does
not
register. But more importantly now I can't seem to record ANY outside Audio (
guitar,
Triton Pro, vocals) And even stranger, RMX grooves won't record either. The
signal for
audio registers on the meter but will not record. I know it's got to be
something simple. I
have been working at this for a few weeks now very part time and I have
resorted to ask
for Help! Any one? Please!

And I'll bet you just installed L7 over the L6 stuff. L7 worked like garbage
for me, until I did a series of things...

I hope it makes you Mac a stable as mine, which hasn't crashed in??? And
FYI, I have a UAD-1, Powercore, and about 171 AU plugin components being run
on my system, and some of them are betas..

Try this out...

After attempting to figure out the new Logic 7's methods of
using older settings file, I did this.

WARNING:I NON LONGER AM USING LOGIC 6. IF YOU DO THIS, IT MIGHT NOT WORK
PROPERLY! IT STILL WORKS FINE HERE THOUGH.

1) I moved my Logic 6 folder to the desktop

2) I deleted all Logic 6 prefs, including the setup assistants. ( Just put
them on the desktop for now.)

3) Install Logic 7

4) Made a copy of my Logic 6 "Sampler Instruments" folder, and my "Plug-in
Settings" folder, and placed them into my user / library / application
support / Logic folder. Logic 7 will now see them.

5) Made sure all my plugins were updated to the Logic 7 compatible versions.

6) Booted Logic. It will take a while for it to check out the AU's.

7) Logic's setup assistant opened up (if not, open it after Logic 7 has
booted up). Configured the settings to match my hardware and midi devices.

Cool Saved my file as my Autoload. If you have special layers, import them
into your new autoload now. Make sure the Autoload is saved in the "Song
Templates" folder in your Logic folder you saved you plugin settings into.

9) If you have any special key commands, import them from you old prefs
file.

10) Go through and change your Logic prefs, and Song prefs to the way you
want them. Don¹t forget to resave your file, or your autoload won¹t have
these new song prefs.

After doing this, Logic 7 runs perfect. I have not had one crash, and
everything works nicely. When I did my first install before doing these
steps, I couldn't figure out what goes where, and Logic 7 crashed more than
a few times.

My old Logic 6 folder is still on my desktop. I don¹t use it, and will more
than likely throw it away, but not just yet...

Hope this helps.

George

John

I should have also asked: With 128 audio instruments, I assume that the environment has to be changed to use Finale as the sequencer to drive Logic 7. Is this simply a matter of more channel splitters, and possibly using layers in Finale to address additional channels?

Ar, I don't know about this because I don't think you can easily get more channels out of Finale - there are only 4 ports = 64 channels.
I don't think Layers will help either as they still address one or more of the same 64.
How many over 64 do you need?

John

The upgrade was pretty smooth for me, but for some it has been a nightmare.
There was a thread on the LUG this week from George Leger III (I think it was) about versions 6 & 7 co-existing peacefully, so check that out.

In general L7 is an improvement over 6, but there are some new annoying quirks (eg sometimes one can copy/paste a SMPTE time from the transport window, sometimes not - great, I need this all the time as I'm scoring to picture right now)

If you're desperate to finish on a deadline I would consider sticking with 6 til the project's done.

best,
John

Hi Michael,

Are you running Logic 7?

If so you should have access to 128 EXS instances now.

The easiest way in my opinion is to copy your 64 existing Audio Objects and then re-assign them to Audio Instruments 65-128 and insert a new WXS instance in each one.
If anyone knows a way of doing this other than clicking on each one in turn it would be nice to know!

best,
John

Wow, VSL team, that's a great offer!

I think I want the Pro WW & Brass more that Strings & Percussion (but I suppose I'd want the performance set also, which is the whole orchestra)

Currently I have the First Edition Complete Orchestral Package.

I guess I need to talk myself into this as money is a bit tight these days - would it be crazy NOT to go for the COP Pro upgrade?

Your thoughts are welcome

best,
John
