1.Midi Controllers- What do you use? 2/23/2015 12:15:08 AM

Hi Pyre,

Thnks for that. I'll explore some of the things you mentioned.

I think the Korg nano faders are probably high enough res for my use but I found it hard to customize. I think I'll have another go if I don't find another more suitable contoller.

2.Midi Controllers- What do you use? 2/21/2015 8:57:40 PM

Thanks for your reply.

I don't actually want a keyboard as I have a Roland RD300 which is 88 note and has a very nice action. What it doesn't have is sliders and knobs and even the mod wheel has very little travel. The PCR800 has got the sliders but crappy action and not enough notes.

I'd like a separate box buttons and sliders only. I've noticed on youtube videos some people using a Peavy unit but they are no longer made. I have also seen people using ipads with apps but I'm not sure if that's a cost effective route.

I'm surpised there aren't more units on the market to fill the gap left btween the Korg nanokontroller and expensive control surfaces with motorised faders.

3.Midi Controllers- What do you use? 2/18/2015 9:33:36 PM

I'm looking for a midi controller with a mixture of faders and buttons such as can be found on my Eiderol PCR 800

The buttons are handy to use for the VSL keyswitches and the faders for mod, expression etc.

I keep searching for products but I can't find anything suitable. I don't need motorised faders or to control my DAW. There is the Korg nano controller (which I have) but I'm not keen on it.

What are you using?

Thanks

4.New Black Mac Pro vs last gen 12-Core MP ? 12/19/2013 7:26:11 PM

I was always told it was better to keep the OS and applications on a separate drive to the sample libs etc.

Is this still the case?

I want to wait for the new MP and wonder if it's better to stick with a smaller internal flash - tight budget- and go external SSD for the libs and projects etc. I could then spend less on flash and more on memory and number of cores etc.

Make sense?

5.General work process? How do you all do it? Struggling with tools. 4/22/2013 2:35:32 PM

There are two meanings for the word 'neat'.

One means tidy/ well presented/ orderly etc.

The other is an Americanism and means good/ cool/ nice etc.

In many ways Bartok's music can be said to satisfy both definitions.

The movie looks good but the musical composition is even better! Wow, hats off to the composer!

7.'Septet' for assorted solo instruments from SE Vol 1. 4/19/2013 5:21:27 PM

Ah that's much betterSmile

Thanks Bill and Dietz,

Bill, I used a program called Screenflow but I think it may be Mac only.

@winknotes--
I am open to any comments or critiques but don't take the written score too seriously as I was very lax with the detail. I really only do the video with a score to give the listener something meaningful to look at.---
I have another video on my youtube channel which shows the key edit window of my DAW where I colour coded the different instruments.---
@ William,---
Yes a large score would be very tricky and quite fiddly to do I think. Maybe the video could follow the parts that you might look at if you were reading the score.------------------------PS @ winknotes,--How do you get paragraph in your posts. Mine come with the text all in one block. This is a very annoying forum to post in, no html, links etc.
9.'Septet' for assorted solo instruments from SE Vol 1. 4/19/2013 8:48:24 AM
Thanks winknotes,
All the parts have numerous key switches and controller info.
I originally wrote the score in Finale but then sequenced it (played each part from scratch) in Logic.
The video looks like a Finale playback but I actually dubbed the audio mix on afterwards.
10.'Septet' for assorted solo instruments from SE Vol 1. 4/18/2013 4:33:22 PM
I wrote this little piece to experiment with small ensembles using Special Edition Vol 1.
It was sequenced in Logic 9 where I added the panning and reverb.
The ensemble is:-----------------------
Flute-
Clarinet-
Bassoon-
Trombone-
Violin-
Viola-
Bass-

I'd like to hear some of your work if it's available. I'm not trying to be critical of people who enjoy using virtual instruments, that would be silly as I'm one of them. But would you not agree that given the choice, the real thing is preferable? Therefore we can only approximate.

If you've recorded live musicians (good ones) you'll agree that V.Instruments, though good for background stuff, are a long way from a real performance.

I am only responding to the notion that it is a mistake to write to the samples any more than it is to write to the musician.

Unlike some users here, I believe one really must 'write to the samples' and not expect to realise satisfactorily, an orchestral score that is conceived for real instruments. Unless of course, one is just making a demo for the real thing. I've yet to hear any programmer or library come close to an instrument in the hands of a musician.
A good orchestrator should write well for the instruments at his/her disposal. If these are virtual instrument then it is a mistake to try to make them compete with the real thing. At least as far as the fine detail and nuance is concerned.
Besides, the painstaking tweaking that is required to make music scored for real instruments sound realistic, is tedious and time consuming.

These are just some personal thoughts and I appreciate that the software has come a long way and others will disagree with my opinions.
13.External Drives for Mac Mini 2/17/2013 1:43:40 AM
I am looking at getting a mac mini to use as a slave but I know that the internal HD they come with is only 5400 rpm and it is advisable to have a minimum of 7200 rpm. The options are modifying the internal or getting an external and I think thunderbolt sound like the best solution as. I think firewire 800 is Ok as long as the rpm of the drive is fast enough.
I would like to ask you how well your existing setup performs with the internal drives in the minis. Are you getting problems? And also what host do you have?

15.VEP: Please explain (or provide link) Difference Between Metaframe and Project 2/1/2013 1:27:26 AM
I posted a similar question a few days ago but have not received any answers.
I think I have worked out that a metaframe saves several instances together on your host or slave computer if you have more than one instance.
I have also found that it is good to save each instance as a project, thus keeping all the cc controller settings and routing etc as they were left.
I find that if I just load the song file (Logic) some of my VI settings don'r come back as expected so I load the project for each instance and they do.
I haven't worked out the best method of saving the template though and maybe Logic is not as well integrated with VSL as cubase.
I need some help too.
16.What to save, where and when? Metaframes, preserve, plug-in, project? 1/27/2013 1:12:56 AM
Hi,
I'm fairly new to VE Pro 5 although I have been using VI Special Edition with Logic 9 for a while.

There seems to be too many choices when it comes to saving my setup and I'm not sure what to save and where.

I have been building a template using a Mac Pro with one instance of VE and a Macbook Pro with 2 more instances.

The Mac Pro (local host) instance has my VSL SE instruments loaded and the MBP has one instance Cinematic Strings and another instance with Project Sam instruments.

I can save the Logic song file, the Logic template. I can name and save in the AU plug-in window, preserve each instance and save the metaframe.
I am confused because I'm sure some saving procedures are made unnecessary by other procedures.

Also, and this is the most crucial thing,

After setting up the VSL SE controller assignments exactly how I want and with the sliders in a good starting point, eg attack and release, and after saving everything I can, when I reload the template, the release slider has gone back to 0.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks
