1.RAM and SSD... 6/13/2012 8:53:05 AM

 Hi Vincent,

I will give you a approximation. In Kontakt 5 I changed my memory buffer from standard 60 kB to 6 kB. So that saves up to 90% of the RAM used.

VSL says on page 8 of the VI Pro2 manual the same. You can save up to 90% or load up to 10 times more samples.

Cheers,

Sabine

2.Installing new SE files 5/15/2012 8:57:08 AM

Hi,

is there a reason to install the new files? New content or just newly organized?

Cheers,

Sabine

3.How to use CC controler to switch matrix cells in VI pro2 5/11/2012 9:20:09 AM

Thank you all for your feedback!!!

@DG: Yes, probably I have to simplify my approach here. But I like to have all articulations at hand. So you only have matrices for the standard articulations and load up the rest if needed? I have never worked with macros but I will see what I find about it and check it out.

@Bill: Event Inputs sound interesting. I'm new to VEP5, so I have just read a little bit about it. Do I need a separate midi track to just send midi date via Event inputs?

Cheers,

Sabine

4.How to use CC controler to switch matrix cells in VI pro2 5/9/2012 1:43:55 PM

Hi DG,

thanks for joining in!

Until now I always needed 2 expression maps for the low and high instruments for the reason andyjh is describing. I switched the matrices with program changes. Now I upgraded to MIR Pro 24. So I use VEP5 to load up VIP2. I can't use my program changes anymore, because I need to use the VST3 bridge to VEP5 to control multiple midi channels.

I tried to switch to only keyswitching yesterday but I have two problems:

1) There are not enough keys on the keyboard. I know you think I'm mad but my presets include about 30 matrices. Not all matrices are enabled but I have the same matrix structure for all my VSL instruments.

2) When I use keyswitching for matrices, X-axis and Y-axis I get quite often hung notes on the keyboard and I can't manage to change the matrices and the cells on the same time. I don't use the 2nd keyswitch in the Cubase expression maps, so I have to trigger in an extrem scenario up to 3 keyswitches at the same time. Could this be too much for the VIP2 player?

Thanks for any help!

Cheers,

Sabine

5.How to use CC controler to switch matrix cells in VI pro2 5/9/2012 10:00:30 AM

This is very interesting since I always used keyswitching and had some troubles with it. So using CCs might be a solution. Is is possible to use a CC to switch between the matrices?

Could I use CC1 for switching matrices, CC2 for switching X-axis and CC3 for switching Y-axis within one matrix?

Cheers,

Sabine

6.MIR Pro questions 4/25/2012 8:54:42 AM

Thanks a lot for your replies!

@civilization 3: Yes, I read about those techniques to position third party libraries in MIR and I always thought that this is a little bit strange. But since this is a feature of MIR I thought there might be a kind of guideline how to handle those libraries in MIR...

Seems like we both are using the Vienna Suite at the moment. I use the Power Panner all the time and the Hybrid Reverb to create my room depth. I like the Vienna Suite a lot!

@noldar12 & Dietz: Yes, I know that it is free for MIR SE users. But since I need VE Pro I have to take that money also into account. Are there additional reasons to have VE Pro other than hosting MIR? I'm sure there are! ;-) I have a single PC setup - so no slaves.

I think I will have another look at the VE Pro videos...

Thanks again!

Cheers,

Sabine

7.MIR Pro questions 4/24/2012 8:42:23 AM

I'm still undecided of whether to upgrade my MIR Se to MIR Pro 24 or even to MIR Pro or not!!!

I like the concept of MIR (to simplify the mixing) very much, but to be onest I never really used MIR SE that much. I think the reason is that the standalone version was just not working for my workflow of always coming back to the midi files and changing CCs.

The reason I am undecided is that most of my sample libaries are not from VSL anymore. I only use the woodwinds from VSL, all the rest are third party libraries (LASS, Spitfire, Cinesamples etc). I know that this is possible to use them in MIR Pro or MIR Pro 24 but I'am wondering if I lose the advantage of simplifying things.

So my questions are:

1) Most of the third party libraries are recorded in an orchestral seating. How do I use them in MIR? I read somewhere that you have to use Powerpan from the VSL Suite (which I own) for example to bring the instruments to a neutral position and than place them in MIR. Sounds a little complicated for me.

2) I also read that if the library offers multiple mic positions you should always use the close mics and than place them in MIR and use the room sound from MIR. But isn't the room sound what makes those libraries great? Cinebrass for example sounds great recorded in that sony scoring stage with the decca tree mics but I don't like the close mics at all. I doubt that I would like them with the close mics in MIR. Okay - I could check that by myself with my MIR SE software. ;-)

3) Is it maybe possible to just place these libraries inside MIR to get a panning but not use the room sound on them? That way I could still use the decca tree mics. Confused...

If the answer to those questions is better don't use those libraries in MIR (which I wouldn't expect on a VSL forum) than I wouldn't need MIR Pro and could just upgrade to MIR Pro 24 for the woodwinds and some other dry recorded libraries. But is this worth 480 EUR?. I would have to buy Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 which I wouldn't use for anything else but MIR and of course I would also like to have the roompack 2 with the teldex room - if I go that route. ;-)

On the other hand I could just use a little bit of hybrid reverb from my VSL Suite or some 2C breeze reverb for the woodwinds and that's it! That way I wouldn't go the MIR route and could save the money for VSL Jazz Drums for example. ;-)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Sabine

10.sul ponticello again 3/14/2012 8:58:58 AM

I think you could even go two steps further:

1) If you need the Chamber strings sul ponticello you could buy the SE Strings Plus Full download. That is standard and extended for €290. I'm quite sure that you don't need the SE Strings to buy the SE Strings Plus. You just can't play the articulations from SE Strings. But you do need the standard content to buy the extended version.

2) If you just need the solo strings sul ponticello, you could only buy the SE Strings Plus Standard - not the full version. That standard is only €165.

Sabine

Nice insane composition and nice show off for the chamber strings! I think one day I will have to get them. ;-)

12.MIR SE Pro release? 2/10/2012 6:10:17 PM

Hi Dietz,

thanks for the info! Sounds fine. But as a current MIR SE user I would really appreciate it if you could give it a name like MIR Pro 32 (or very similar to this). ;-)

Cheers,

Sabine

13.MIR SE Pro release? 2/10/2012 9:15:04 AM

Hi VSL,

are there any news on the release date for MIR SE Pro?

MIR PRO really seems to be a great software! Congrats VSL! It would be great to have the possibility to upgrade my MIR SE to the MIR SE Pro version. Back in December it was announced somewhere here in the forum that it should be finished in February/March 2012. Is everything still on track?

Cheers,

Sabine

14.Albion Spitfire, Orchestral Essentials, or SE+ (Standard) 2/2/2012 10:28:25 AM

I think it really depends what kind of music you are making and what you need. I don't think those 3 libraries are comparable.

- If you are doing a lot of classical music and you need more articulations than the ones you already have in your SE bundle than you have to go with SE Plus. Albion and Orchestral Essentials won't give you any new articulations.

- If you are fine with your articulations and you want to layer your VSL instruments with a new sound than you have to go with Albion or OE. As you said there is a certain overlap with Orchestral Essentials and the VSL Special Edition. So I would go with Albion in that case.

I own SE Plus and Albion and like them both a lot, for what they are. I don't own Orchestral Essentials.

Cheers,

Sabine

15.SSD & VSL 1/5/2012 9:42:14 AM

Hi Martin,

thanks for the info! So is it better to have a high IOPS for random 64kB read or a high general read rate?

Cheers,

Sabine

17.[SOLVED] Wrong trill samples in oboe 2? 12/13/2011 10:40:12 AM

Hi Herb,

that makes sense. It's great that we can choose between different options. Thanks a lot!

18.[SOLVED] Wrong trill samples in oboe 2? 12/11/2011 5:39:42 PM

Yes, leg trill patch is even better. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

Sabine

19.[SOLVED] Wrong trill samples in oboe 2? 12/11/2011 2:41:45 PM

I think the trills2 for oboe2 might have two wrong samples. The notes G5 and G#5 play a minor 3rd interval instead of the major 2nd.I helped myself by using the F#5 and tuned it up to play the whole tone trill G5->A5.

Can anybody confirm this or am I finally hearing that bad? ;-)

Cheers,

Sabine

20.New SSD Drive 11/29/2011 1:01:53 PM

I need a new SSD drive to have more space for my VSL libraries!!! ;-) I hover between the Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB and the newer model the Crucial m4 SSD 128GB.

Here are the specs:
C300: 60.000 IOPS; 355 MB/s read speed at Sata3
M4: 40.000 IOPS; 415 MB/s read speed at Sata3

So what is more important for the VSL samples? Max. read speed or random 4K read? Are the samples smaller or bigger data files?
I remember Cyril did a lot of testing for SSD drive and I searched the old threads but I couldn't find anything concerning IOPS.

Cheers,
Sabine

21.Is MIR SE discontinued??? 11/25/2011 9:51:29 AM

Hey, that sounds nice! I was also wondering.

Do you need VE Pro 5 for MIR SE Pro?

22.Trouble with library updates 11/22/2011 10:04:17 PM

Thanks so much corte1!!! That was my problem. I always opened the directory manager as administrator as I thought that would be a good option. Now everything is fine. :)

Thanks again for your support!

23.Trouble with library updates 11/22/2011 1:38:29 PM

I have the same problem here. :(

I've installed the lastet VI Pro and eLicenser software. But I always get the prohibited mouse icon when I try to drop those library update files on the folders in the Directory Manager. I also tried from different drives cause I've read in an old thread that the updates won't work when you try to install them form an usb stick.

Anything else I could try?

24.I wonder about the VSL Extended Techniques DVD! 8/31/2011 10:35:31 AM

25.Vienna Instr. PRO 2 and SSD disks 6/30/2011 8:45:30 AM

Hi andyjh,

I'm not an expert for ssd drives, but I believe the reason to buy ssd drives is not the loading time for the instruments - it's the streaming performance. Only a small fraction from the instrument samples are loaded into RAM when you open a matrix. When I playback for example 60 instruments then my hard drives reach 100% workload. If they do so some instruments (for example kontakt instruments) won't play. They just can't load all that samples fast enough. So I started buying additional drives for strings, woodswinds, brass, percussion etc. and some weeks ago I bought two smalll SSD drives. Now everything is fine and the hard drives peak at 50% workload.

Nevertheless the loading time should be faster too. That is not so important when you only load a single patch. But for people with 24GB templates it should be a difference of some minutes.
