1.Homologating various drives into a single slave 11/9/2020 1:20:39 AM

Hi All,

I'm replacing 3 computer slaves with one big, new beast. It's a Ryzen 3900XT with an Asus X570-E motherboard. The setup has RAID capabilities as well as USB 3.2 Gen2. I will, for now, be using my current sample SSDs, which are currently spread over 3 computers and 2 different methods of use (RAID 0 and Windows Storage Spaces.

For the gurus is, how might I best adapt these drives for a single Slave setup with the Ryzen/X570-E setup?

I'm currently running the following:

Slave1: I'm running 2 Samsung 860 QVO 1Tb SSDs, under Windows "Storage Spaces" In my best guess at a mirrored/striped setup, a "two-way mirror" using their terminology. Capacity ends up about 1Tb.  I have no issues with this setup.

Slave2: Identical to Slave1.

Slave3: A random bunch of SSDs in a USB 3.0-to-SATA Raid 4-bay enclosure from Orico, running RAID 0.

Should I, in theory, be OK to run the four 1TB 860EVOs in the RAID 4-bay Orico enclosure, or would I find a very noticeable improvement by creating an onboard, motherboard-based RAID setup? Or for that matter, where would you put Windows Storage Spaces in this setup, desirability-wise?

My gut says I should be OK using the Orico 4-bay, 4TB RAID option over the USB 3.0-to-SATA setup. But I could be very wrong here lol.

Any thoughts would be appreciated:) I have all of the components, just waiting for Noctua to get some of their fans back into Canada to finish it off:)

Merci,

Shawn

2.Working in VEP/VIP/Syncron with DAW closed? 10/20/2020 2:20:53 PM

Hi All,

This is probably something I should have tried to figure out years ago, but now I must, as it drives me batty lol. And I'm hoping it possible (of course).

Is there no way to be able to use a keyboard/controller while creating, modifying, or just inspirational playing around in VEP when loading samples, cells, new instruments into VIP, Synchron (or whatever else, i.e. EW Play, Trilian...) while the DAW is not running (when the keyboard is connected to the same computer as the DAW), or when doing the same on a slave computer while the DAW actually is (or isn't) running (when the keyboard is attached via USB to the slave computer...when attached to the DAW computer would be even better)?

Even if a sample player is set up to work in "standalone" mode, with options set for the keyboard and audio output, this seems not to work the same once loaded into VEP.

I hope this is an obvious "yes, you can", and I am just a big dummy here lol:)

Thanks everyone,

Shawn

3.More RAM or more cores for Vienna Suite Pro and Mir Pro? 10/14/2020 10:18:36 AM

Hi all,

I have the chance to up my build from (currently) a Ryzen 9 3900 XT (12-core, 24-Thread Unlocked) and 64Gb 3600 DDR4 RAM.

At 64Gb, I'm calculating enough RAM given my current and speculative-future VSL samples.

But new to my workflow will be extensive use of Mir Pro and effects, namely Vienna Suite Pro, and I have hundreds of channels in my template.

Would I therefore be better served upping the RAM to 128Gb, or upping the CPU to a Ryzen 9 3950X (16-core, 32-Thread Unlocked)? Do Mir Pro and VSP hunger more for RAM or CPU?

Thanks Everyone:)

Shawn

4.Recommend CPU, RAM, motherboard for "economical" 64GB slave build 10/1/2020 3:28:47 PM

Thanks very much karma3. This is definitely helpful. A quick run-through, without even communicating with him (I will speak with him, of course) and I'm just under $2K (USD, I suppose).

Thanks for the resource:)

Shawn

5.Recommend CPU, RAM, motherboard for "economical" 64GB slave build 10/1/2020 1:23:56 PM

Hi everyone, I'm running a 32Gb Dell XPS 15 7590 for my DAW and some VEP instances (mostly non-VIP, i.e. EWQL Wordbuilder SATB instances, Voices of Passion, and some Synchron). I'm going to up the RAM to 64GB (Symphonic Choirs seems to take up a boatload of RAM when not streaming from disk).

I'm running 2 slaves, both 16GB, both older, i5 and i7. Both of the slaves are running only VIP in VEP. They both work fine for now, but my template is getting large and I'm going to incorporate MIR Pro and Vienna Suite Pro very soon.

I want to replace the 2 slaves with one modern home-built desktop with 64Gb (upgradable to 128-256), with an appropriate CPU and motherboard, strictly for VEP/VIP/MIR Pro use.

As I've not built a computer for 7-8 years, I don't have the time to spend doing tons of research, and even if I did, I'd rather get some solid opinions from the experts (you guys) who have built modern boxes for VSL use.

To that end, could I please ask for some solid CPU, motherboard, RAM (and anything else you feel is crucial) recommendations, given I'd like, if possible, to spend no more than $2,500 Cdn?

Are these new "NUC" mini-boxes worth considering? I'd like to go fanless if possible, as the fans always get too loud after a few years of use, even with cleaning.

Thanks kindly for your help:)

Shawn
