1.Purcell - Overture (Dido & Aeneas) 9/21/2015 5:12:20 AM

Very nice! I like it.

2.Bb Clarinet legato patch 9/4/2015 11:17:17 AM

Well, the legato-sus patch sounds the same as the legato patch in this case. I can get by using with crossfading into the sustain patch though. I was just wondering if there is a bug in the clarinet samples or VI. It seems strange that repeated notes in the legato patches work fine with all instruments but this one.

3.Bb Clarinet legato patch 9/4/2015 7:03:02 AM

Hi Paul.

Shouldn't the legato patch loop the same sample over again for repeated notes? The last two notes in the file I uploaded do not sound like the first two samples(In fact, it sounds like the velocity is being lowered while the note is playing). Other instruments do not do this when you repeat the same notes in the legato patch. They repeat the same sample.

4.Bb Clarinet legato patch 9/4/2015 6:08:29 AM

When I play the same note several times using the legato patch on the Bb clarinet, the sound seems to become distorted. Any idea what is happing here? It sounds like this:

The first two notes sound normal but all notes after sound like they are fading. The instrument sounds normal if I use the sustain patch or if the tempo is slow.

Just download VI from the MyVSL downloads section. It comes with all VSL's instruments. You don't need the pro version to do this.

6.First VSL orchestration 9/4/2015 5:35:48 AM

This is my first attempt at orchestration with VSL. I sequenced the first part of Schubert's unfinished symphony using the Special Editions and Cubase 7. Any comments or suggestions on how to improve this would be appreciated. I used this recording more or less as a reference:

I don't have Vienna Imperial, but I think you can set the tuning on any instrument that uses VI. Open the advanced window in VI and click on the options tab. There should be a field to change the Master Tuning there.

8.Realistic dynamics with VSL 8/12/2015 1:31:56 PM

Thanks for the explanation. I think you covered just about everything. Its good to know this is not as complicated as I thought at first.

I did not know Mirx could automatically adjust the volume against other instruments. Thats a pretty useful feature that could certainly save a lot of time.

9.Realistic dynamics with VSL 8/11/2015 12:04:31 PM

Getting realistic sounding dynamics seems pretty tricky. I have a few questions about how to do this, so here goes:

Does Expression differ from velocity X-Fade in that Expression only changes the volume within one velocity layer? It seems like Expression controls the distance to the sound. But with X-Fade I can hear the timbre changing.

If X-Fade provides a more realistic adjust of dynamics, when should I use Expression?

Since the dynamic range floor controls the range of sound levels, should I always keep set this to its maximum setting for the most realism?

If I am going to use reverb, should I add it before I set the dynamics?

Should I add the dynamics to the loudest and softest points in the section first and use them as reference points?

And if anyone can give me any other tips on adding dynamics I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

10.Some questions from a beginner 8/11/2015 9:54:24 AM

Thanks for the response Jasen.

Ok, now I understand how non-legato patches work. Previously I thought some patches had chords recorded in the samples. I see VI in just mixing monophonic samples to play them. I do not have the pro version of VI so I guess cannot play polyphonic legato intervals, but I'll get by using separate tracks to play legato chords.

I was hoping VI has a way to make the samples switch between divisi and non-divisi but thats asking for too much I guess. VI is powerful enough. Using dual instances of Chamber strings for an orchestral sound should work fine. But do I need to do this if the only chords in the track are from some non-legato patch like staccato or sforzato? I imagine it will sound louder if I use a single full orchestra, since each note in the chord will be played by a separate orchestra, but I could just lower the expression for that chord.

11.Some questions from a beginner 8/10/2015 3:54:51 AM

Hi everyone. I recently purchased VI Special Editions and have a few questions about the library and VE.

Are all VSL instruments recorded with neutral panning?

How are chords played when using ensemble patches?
Are they played divisi, or non-divisi? (For polyphonic instruments)

If I think a patch is too loud, and it only has one velocity layer(like sfz), how can I make it sound softer?

I am not sure on how to best implement dynamics with VSL. I see there is a velocity X-fade(CC 2), expression(CC 11), note velocity, patch volume in the slot editor, and dynamic range scaler. And also the velocity curve graph. How do I use these controls for good dynamics? It seem pretty confusing.

And finally, I am having an issue with VE and Cubase 7.5. I play the song, and the note expression in cubase triggers the appropriate articulation. However, pausing cubase causes instruments to revert to the sustain articulation. How can I fix this?

12.Scores in musicXML 7/15/2015 5:21:21 PM

Hello everyone. I am learning to orchestrate with VSL's Special Edition. In order to get familiar with VSL I would like to practice orchestrating classical pieces(Mozart, Beethoven, etc). I see quite a few classical composers works orchestrated with VSL and posted here in the forums. Are the scores for these works manually input into the DAW or is there a website where I can find them in MusicXML or MIDI form?
