1.Possible Noob Question: Advantages To Running Kontakt Inside VEP? 5/5/2019 11:35:42 PM

Hi,

For the first time I'm starting to run some Kontakt libs that take a loooooooooooooooooooong time to load. (AudioBros LASS and the new Scoring Brass).

QUESTION: If I only have -one- machine doing double-duty as a DAW -and- VEP Server, is there any advantage to running Kontakt inside VEP?  I assume this would -primarily- be that the samples would already be preloaded in VEP, but is there any other upside?

Are there any -downsides-?  (Writing automation comes to mind?)

Sorry if these are stupidissimo. It's been a decade and still I've only ever used VEP for hosting VSL instruments.

TIA,

---JC

2.What gets saved with Ensemble Pro Instance? 2/4/2019 5:49:24 AM

WOW. I have a much older version of the docs (I'm stilling using VEP 5) and it is nowhere -near- as clear as this. THANK YOU. I wonder how much the concepts are the same between VEP 5 and VEP 6?

Yep. You have the choice to keep the VEP settings, or load in the settings from the DAW.

When you load your DAW project which has VEP, you'll see the "Load plugin data" button (down arrow) light up. Press it and choose "Load incoming project data", and VEP will read the settings from the DAW project. If you don't want the settings from the DAW, you can choose "Discard plugin data."

This is explained in the section "PRESERVE, DECOUPLE, CONNECT AND DISCONNECT – AN OVERVIEW" of VEP manual, p57 of English version 3.1.

3.What gets saved with Ensemble Pro Instance? 2/2/2019 10:31:07 PM

Hi,

I'm still a bit skeptical. I'm on Windows. The only two parameters I'm trying to 'remember' are Vol (7) and Expression (11).

When I load VEP, I have the 'Preserve' box checked.

I then load a VEP preset which loads values for each instrument.

I then load a Cubase 10 CPR which I -expect- to override the default value for Vol(7) and Exp(11) for each instrument, but it doesn't seem to. Instead, it seems to simply stick with the default value of the VEP Preset.

Hope that made sense.

What am I doing wrong?

4.What gets saved with Ensemble Pro Instance? 2/2/2019 3:11:24 AM

I've been using VEP and VIP for what seems like -forever- but I'm clearly not 'getting' something pretty basic.

1. When I save an Instance of VEP does it or does it not save ALL the slider settings for each loaded VIP instrument?

2. When I load a saved Instance of VEP and then load a Cubase project (CPR), what settings do I need to enter in VEP to make sure that when I save the CPR it will -override- the VEP Instance and save all the sliders on each loaded VIP Instrument?

What I'm getting at is that I have a standard VEP Instance I've used for a looooong time but I've been changing the settings of a couple of VIP instruments and it doesn't seem as though those settings (Volume and Exp) are being reloaded by VEP when I next start up my DAW.

Do I need to make an explicit automation entry into every Cubase MIDI track to set a starting Vol and Exp value? I sure hope not.

My guess is that these are total noob questions. I just got started with something that 'worked' 5-10 years ago and never had the need to memorise the underlying concepts. I beg yer patience.

TIA,

---JC

Thanks very much.

Best,

Thanks again.

1. But the 2nd Vlns are actually the same samples as the 1sts, right?

2. Are there examples which show how the Synchron version improves on the 'VI Pro' version?

Can you comment on the 2nd Violins? Are they new samples? How do they differ from the 1sts?

Anyone?

9.Upgrade CS I & II to Synchron Questions 8/5/2018 5:53:27 PM

Hi,

I have Chamber Strings I and II full libraries.

I read this page: https://www.vsl.co.at/en...Synchron_Chamber_Strings

1. Does the price of 145 euro include upgrading  -both- CS I -and- CS II to Synchron Chamber Strings or is this just for CS I?

2. Can you provide some information as to how you created the 2nd Violin section? What I mean is that I thought that the original recordings for CS were only for a single set of violins. Did you use the same players and then edit the same sample content to create 'new' players at a different 'space' in the room?

Thanks in advance. Looks -very- cool.

10.Feature Request Or Suggestion: Chamber Strings Combi 8/19/2017 3:32:56 AM

Thanks.

If VSL reads this stuff. I gotta say... I HATE having to watch videos when you add features. I would much prefer if you would simply revise the PDF. Or if that's too much work at least offer users the script of the videos as a PDF.

11.Feature Request Or Suggestion: Chamber Strings Combi 8/17/2017 9:04:25 PM

Creating an 'ensemble' patch is not what I'm confused about. I'm sure I can do that.

But the Legato patches for Vln, Vla, Vc, CB are all monophonic. How does one combine, for example, 2 Violin Legato patches so that one can have a smooth melody line, but then still be able to have 2 voices sound at the same time?

You can then crossfade the ranges of each section with each other (this is explained somewhere in the videos). I'm not aware if you need VI Pro, because I had it from the start and don't really remember which features the free version doesn't include.

I've done a LOT of programming in Kontakt, but never with VSL/VIPro. Can you give me some basics as to how one would do this?

My main goal is to simply make the transitions between notes in the Chamber Strings Svi patch smoother (ie. more legato)

13.Feature Request Or Suggestion: Chamber Strings Combi 8/17/2017 3:43:22 AM

I've had Chamber Strings for years now and love it. Most of the time, I'll start off using the Combi patch, work out an arrangement, then break it out into separate parts.

But sometimes the parts are so simple that it's not really necessary to do this EXCEPT that the Combi patch doesn't really sound all that great. The Svi patch doesn't sound very 'legato' and the range of patches aren't broad enough to handle a variety of accents (marcatos).

It seems to me that this Combi -could- be programmed to be a LOT better. In other words, it -could- be updated so that melody lines transition more smoothly, accents sound nicer, etc. without new samples.

Perhaps you could call this a 'Level 2 Combi' Patch.

I would HAPPILY pay for this program update as it would save me a LOT of time in not having to break out simply arrangements into separate MIDI tracks,

Your thoughts?

14.Purchasing strings in smaller chunks 3/27/2017 6:06:55 PM

Hi Paul,

I just wanna chime in with what I think is a valid point...

We all know that VSL are pricey compared with most other libs. The quality is there for sure so that's fine.

But still... the whole notion of SE and various 'bundles' makes it -very- hard for a guy on my budget to -ever- get in the door.

The libs are priced a LOT like auto dealer parts... ie. if you were to buy the libs one instrument at a time, the total cost would be, like buying a car one part at a time, astronomical.

I know you -think- you're doing people a favour with bundle pricing, but from talking to other people like me,  you're not. You're basically marketing to either 'students' or 'the well-heeled'. There's no middle-ground.

My suggestion would be MUCH more simplified pricing. IMO, it should be possible to buy each instrument one at a time knowing that the total cost will -never- pay more for the complete library. IOW: If I buy Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, etc. one at a time over the course of a year, my total price paid should match the price of the Brass bundle. In short: the price of single instruments should be lowered so that one can buy a la carte and still feel like they're getting good value. Or perhaps, you could offer an ever-increasing discount--as one buys more instruments, the discounts increase to the point where the total price paid for having all the instruments matches the prices of the 'bundles'.

As it stands now, I basically -never- buy VSL stuff because as I need various instruments my options are to get an 'SE' which is never quite adequate... OR take out a bank loan to get the full instruments I need. I need may 2-3 instruments a year and if the pricing for single instruments had been lower, I probably would've gotten a dozen instruments by now... and then been close enough to consider getting the complete libs (with the various loyalty discounts). That would've given me more VSL and you more money over time.

I'm not saying you should dilute the value of the brand, but the pricing choices are currently either: a) big money for what one really -needs- or b) entry-level discounts. There's no middle choice for people like me who do serious work, but are also seriously poor. (ie. every working musician I know.)

YMMV

15.Brass Pre-Sales Questions (Mutes) 3/27/2017 5:42:21 AM

Hoping for a speedy reply since the 2+1 offer ends soon. I'm writing for chamber orchestra and I need a good trumpet or two and trombone. I already own Chamber Orchestra and Tenor Sax.

I'm trying to decide between getting individual instruments and SE2 Brass.

1. Is the Bb Mute Trumpet a simple straight mute?

2. I can't really tell from the demos... is the Muted C Trumpet more of a Harmon mute or is it a straight mute like the Bb Muted Trumpet?

3. What articulations in the SE2 Brass are -missing- relative to the Muted C Trumpet?

4. If I get the SE 2 Brass lib, the 2+1 discount does -not- apply, correct?

5. I started a shopping cart for the Muted C Trumpet and the Muted Bb Trumpet. The MyVSL lists a 'Special Edition Discount' for each, but when I get to Checkout, I see no discount. Why? Or is that discount something else?

Thanks in advance!

16.VEP5: Does Saving Instance Save initial articulation? 2/16/2017 6:04:55 PM

Thanks, Paul.

17.VEP Feature Request: AlwaysOnTop 2/16/2017 6:00:58 PM

Been asking for this for years...

I'd like an option to make the VEP Instance Windows 'always on top' as they say in Windows. It would -always- be placed over any other apps when Alt-Tabbing through Windows.

Several x-platforum apps (eg. VLC Media Player) already offer this so it can't be -too- hard to program.

USE CASE: Constantly alt-tabbing between Cubase Key Editor to play keyswitches and want to be able to see the effect on the VIP Instruments (running in the VEP Instance)  AS I PLAY---without having to lose focus on my MIDI track.

18.VEP5: Does Saving Instance Save initial articulation? 2/16/2017 4:43:02 AM

 Possible Noob Question.

If I save a metaframe or an instance of VEP, is it guaranteed to save the articulation on each channel?

IOW: I have 10 channels of various string patches. Channel #1 is set to Violins Pizz.

When I start a new Cubase song, if I load an instance that is de-coupled, will it automatically load Channel #1 as Violins with the Pizz articulation selected?

OR do I have to make sure to have a keyswitch set in Cubase to explicitly select the Pizz articulation on the track using Violins #1?

Hope that makes sense,

TIA,

19.Special Edition Recommendation? 11/28/2016 2:53:15 AM

Hi,

This is probably one of those asked/answered 12,000 times. So this is 12,001.

I mostly do 'progressive rock' recordings. I'll use a lot of orchestral backgrounds but they are -not- usually of the 'Epic Videogame' style. I usually do more 'Stravinsky' than 'Hans Zimmer'. For years I've used East West Quantum Leap Orchestra and Symphonic Choir. Works fine. I also have the complete VSL Chamber Strings and Tenor Sax for more intimate stuff.

But now I want to do more complex orchestrations that will require occasional bits of string quartet/octet (think Eleanor Rigby) and a chamber orchestra with the brass/winds/strings up front--ie. carrying the melody. So they need to be -far- more realistic (especially the solo instruments).

I've got a budget of around 500$... with a little flexibility. I don't necessarily need to get -everything- on my list all at once but I DO want to get enough articulations to sound convincing on what I -do- get (ie. the main problem with EWQLO is not the tone, it's that there simply aren't enough articulations to do complex melodies that sound 'real'. The solo brass and winds sound -fine- IMO. But the solo strings? Oy veh! Terribly synthy)

I don't need 'Epic' instruments or a Piano or much percussion. Instead I want to focus on decent solo strings and orchestral strings that can do more realistic lines--especially a good range of staccato articulations that do repeated figures well. I can wait on mutes.  I am comfy working with VI Pro.

So... is Special Edition a good choice? If so, what 'bundles' or 'volumes' will do me the most good?

To give you an idea of where I'm at, I'm also considering Embertone solo strings (which to my ear seem quite good.) But I figured it's cheaper if I can get a 'bundle' from VSL (assuming the SE solo strings are decent.)

Your thoughts?

TIA!

20.Chamber Strings: Emphasizing The Ends of Long Notes? 10/22/2015 5:33:00 PM

Thanks. Not sure I get how this works, but I'll try it.

Do you use Cubase? I wonder if there any chance that this could be incorporated into an articulation of VSTExpression. Automation like this gets tedious doing over and over in Cubase.

---JC

21.Chamber Strings: Emphasizing The Ends of Long Notes? 10/21/2015 5:10:09 PM

Possibly 'noob' but...

Is there a way to add a cresc. -emphasis- to the end of a long note. If that isn't clear I guess I can scan in some notes but I think you know what I mean...

You have a long string note and put a hair pin at the very end. The players not only make that last bit louder but it has a nice 'chiff' to the end of the note. It just happens automatically.

Maybe I missed something, but I've never noticed this ability in CS.

(What I do now is automate the Expression... it's a PITA and not all that realistic, but it kinda/sorta works.)

Is there a faster/more realisticr way?  (I guess I was hoping for a 'reverse fp' articulation. :D )

TIA!

22.Extend range of top note of Chamber Strings patch 2 semi-tones? 9/30/2015 7:08:00 AM

You da MAAAAN.

At the risk of sounding -whatever-.... I always forget that Vienna is like a LOT of Euro products (like my Zanuzzi washing machine). They never met an inscrutable or hidden icon/feature they didn't like.

23.Extend range of top note of Chamber Strings patch 2 semi-tones? 9/30/2015 1:53:14 AM

Perhaps a noob question, but...

I've got Chamber Strings, VE Pro and recently I got VI Pro.

The top note of the violin in CS is C. I need a D. (Note to Vienna... the 'real' players in my local orchestra can hit that 'D' so it would be great if we could get that... someday....) Anyhoo.

Since I got VI Pro, I've been using the pitch bend 'trick' to get that 'D'. But... is there a way to actuallly -add- a new note (ie. the D) in a VIP Preset? If so, how?

It's kind of a pain to manually do the pitch bend thing (especially with ostinati)

TIA,

---JC

24.[SOLVED} Just Purchased VIP. VIPro Presets Won't Load 5/16/2015 5:23:51 AM

Enable Cells...

Suggestion:

1. Either make this an FAQ bigger n shit sticky post

2. Make the default behaviour for noobs that all cells are -enabled-.

Hi,

I own 3 VSL libraries and VEP but until yesterday did not own VIPro... although I -had- installed VIPro last year and tried the demo. Now I own it and the eLicenser has been installed and activated.

However, when I load an instrument into stand-alone VIPro -or- initiate a VIPro instrument in VEP and then try to load one of the 'VIPro' presets, nothing happens. I see the matrix and the articulations in the keyboard but all  of the 'playable' keys on the keyboard are grayed out and there is no sign that the samples are 'loading'.

But I can still use the non-VIPro presets... they work as before.

So... what am I missing? I guess I expected that, after I activated the license in eLicenser, if I loaded a VIPro instance, the VIPro presets would simply 'work'.

Do I need to re-install or update or somehow 'inform' the libs that I now have VIPro?

TIA,

---JC
