1.3 VEPs become one 5/5/2019 11:25:20 AM

I apologize if I have exhausted you on what is indeed a very simple topic. I will contact support for the refund.

Thank you and great sunday to you.

This wasn't clear from Paul's reply above. I didn't know that you didn't need a license for the master machine since I've had three licenses for years (since I first bought VEP 3 or 4).

Excuse me Paul, but this is not what you wrote above. Please re-read my question. I specifically asked how many licenses I needed in order to run a VEP 7 server on a remote computer and accessing it through Cubase on a master computer. I wrote that I couldn't access the remote VEP server with my current VEP 6 software on my Cubase machine, and you replied that I needed a second VEP license in order to do that.

When I replied that it wasn't fair, you explained that the new licensing policy is justified by the effort you guys put into R&D and updates. Fine, I thought. I didn't like what I had perceived as misleading marketing, but being a VSL user for years and a pretty solid advocate of your software I thought it was inevitable and purchased a second license.

If this wasn't necessary, please let me know how I should access the remote server through the master computer without a VEP 7 license (am I supposed to just install VEP 7 in order to use the plugin, with no license?).

Also, if the above is correct, I would be grateful if you could cancel my 2nd license and arrange for a refund. I have the serial numbers if you need them but I suppose you have access to my profile.

Well I guess I'll wait for Paul to clarify this. I don't see how I could have misunderstood his clear reply to a clear question asked at the top of this thread:

That's correct.

It was this reply that made me shell out for an additional license. I don't think Paul would have said I needed a second license for my master Cubase machine if it wasn't the case.

That is incorrect. Please read Paul's confirmations above. This was the subject of my original post. Even if you only need one server computer, you still need a second license on the computer running your sequencer in order to be able to connect to that server. You can't connect to a VEP 7 server with a computer running a VEP 6 license.

I must have missed something in the announcement email. Usually I would jump on those because I never thought I'd see ambiguous business practices from VSL.

Upgrading from 4 to 5 was 40€.

Upgrading from 5 to 6 was 80€.

And this was for three licenses.

Unless I'm wrong, in order to get the equivalent upgrade to 7, using the "Early Bird" offer, a customer would need to pay 165€ (75 + 45 + 45).

How is any of this even remotely fair is beyond me.

7.3 VEPs become one 5/2/2019 1:04:54 PM

Hello,

Ever since my original VEP 4 purchase I had three licenses of the software. All three have been upgraded to 5 and then 6. Apprently VEP 7 changes the licensing scheme and after buying the upgrade at the special price I only received one license. I do not need the two others immediately, but I sometimes switch computers and two are a "nice to have" option which saves me the trouble of unplugging the USB key (so, not much trouble).

However I'd like to know:

- What prompted this change?

- Is it possible to open saved VEP 7 setups in VEP 6?

Thank you.

+1

There could be an option to only display the source width for the currently selected instrument.

9.MIR icon size 4/28/2019 1:54:55 PM

Thank you. I know the room properties are physically modeled, stereo width controls look great and sound great, but it would be to be able to declutter things a bit visually. I believe they are modeling signals as coming from a mathematical point in space (as opposed to a volumetic sound source having 3 dimensional properties), so IMHO the size of the central icon itself could be user-adjusted. Alternatively, it can't be that big a deal to add a button which doesn't affect sound at all and says "Display icons at half-size" or something (keeping the stereo width display intact).

Just my 2c.

10.MIR icon size 4/28/2019 10:17:17 AM

Hello.

Is there any way to make the MIR icons smaller? I have a ton of instruments in a small space and it's difficult to get a clear view. I know I can hide some of them (not very easy, though, because I don't think you can define groups) but I'd like to be able to resize them.

Thanks.

11.Instances not auto-detected 2/24/2019 12:44:44 PM

Hello,

For some reason, open and active VEP instances are no longer automatically detected on my network. I can connect to an instance by manually entering an IP address and instance name in the plugin, but I don't see all active and unconnected instances in a list, like I used to. Can this have something to do with recent upgrades? (the only thing I'm aware of, except usual point upgrades, is my client machine switching to Mojave, while the server is still on El Capitan, cf. signature below). Is there a way to solve this?

Both machines are on the same network which hasn't changed or moved, same router/switch configuration, same subnet masks, fixed IP address etc. Instances on localhost are detected normally.

EDIT: this seems to be happening with Cubase only. VEP plugins inserted inside NI Maschine detect remote VEP server instances just fine. What could be causing this?

Thank you.

12.eLicenser / Vienna Key problem 10/11/2017 9:50:02 AM

Thanks a lot, Paul. It seems the hub is indeed the culprit here. Phew...

13.eLicenser / Vienna Key problem 10/10/2017 1:39:10 PM

Hello,

After several years of use, my eLicenser has stopped responding when plugged into my powered USB3 hub (the hub is 2 years old).

It IS detected properly when I plug it directly into the back of my iMac.

I've tried checking the power input to the hub, but that seems to work, too: my phone charges only when the hub's AC current is plugged in, otherwise it doesn't charge. The hub doesn't have a LED indicator light for power.

Seems like I'll need a new hub or a new eLicenser, and my question is: do these eLicensers tend to malfunction after several years, is it a known problem and should I transfer all my licenses ASAP?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, on its release. VSL has done some amazing work in order to make VEP a rock-solid piece of software, probably the most dependable application I use (maybe along some stuff from u-he...) No bloat, no new features nobody will use, none of that useless junk. They've also been very reactive to mails, comments and suggestions (on a personal note, Paul Kopf's handling of one of my VIP issues, the day following the probably hectic VEP 6 product launch, is an example of how a software company who cares about their users is supposed to look like). You might argue that VEP is a niche product compared to Cubase, and you would be right. But Cubase is at version 9, for heaven's sake. Plenty of time to do good, if someone at Steinberg actually paid attention to users.

True. And it isn't getting any better, unfortunately.

15.Cubase 9 1/6/2017 7:22:03 AM

Thanks. Indeed, I've made a quick tour again of the available options and none seem to fit the bill.

Just to be clear, I don't wish for new features in each new release. In my post I wrote about the many, many *current* issues which haven't been fixed for years, and intelligent suggestions from many users which are repeatedly ignored. I wrote several times in the Steinberg forums about the need to create a "no new features" release for Cubase, as Apple did with Snow Leopard.

Anyway, thank you for your comments.

16.Cubase 9 12/10/2016 9:43:19 AM

Hi all,

I switched from Logic to Cubase six years ago because of Expression Maps and Instrument Tracks. It has served me well, I was very comfortable with using it with a slave running VEP and a very large template. Workflow was good, I lived with the inevitable quirks, upgraded regularly, gone through many TV/Film scores and was quite happy with my investment.

With the Cubase 9 "update", however, I'm starting to feel more and more like a Steinberg cash cow. None of the suggestions proposed by serious professionals were integrated, modifications normally associated with a point-upgrade are being hailed as major new features and the general feel is an aimless and tone-deaf project. For the first time in years I will not upgrade my DAW.

I kept looking over the years at other products, of course, but none seemed to fit the bill, for me at least (mostly orchestral MIDI with a bit of audio recordings for soloists). I'm now looking again at DP, which is probably wonderful for those who've grown up on it. As much as I'd like to have a "chunks" feature for composing different versions of the same arrangement, I still can't get around the interface.

I could get back to Logic but I don't know how it's evolved. Moreover, with Apple looking more and more like they're neglecting the professional user base, I'm not sure I can trust Logic for the coming years, especially in the light of the years-long confusion they've caused for professional editors with Final Cut Pro.

I can't use a notation program to compose, for several reasons.

Because of their excellent attention to detail and dialogue with their users, I've asked VSL in the past to create a sequencer for the serious linear composer (by that I mean something with no loop-based gadgets, chord tracks or sample-mangling features). They kindly replied that they had other things on their mind...

Pro Tools might be an option but last time I checked its MIDI features were pretty basic. Reaper 5 has Lua scripting which could help immensely with repetitive handling of MIDI data but it's a whole new program to learn and I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

So I'm asking those who work for TV or film in a similar configuration to mine — master with a large VEP slave, complex keyswitches and remote control needs, composing mainly to picture — if their DAW is up to the task, which one they're using, and how is real-world support and feedback. Also, if you've been thinking about switching to Cubase, it might be interested to mention it, because it would be a classic case of grass being greener. Maybe there aren't that many options after all.

Thanks.

18.Dimension Strings MIR Instrument Profiles 10/19/2016 1:03:05 PM

Hello,

When selecting the MIR Instrument Profiles for each Dimension Strings II (Sordino) player, the violins, violas and celli are all set at a level of -15db, whereas the basses are set to -22db. When all players are playing together I find the basses are almost inaudible compared to the other sections. Is there a mistake in the basses profiles or is this intentional?

Thanks.

19.[SOLVED] Epic Orchestra gone? 9/10/2016 8:43:08 PM

I've been hiding behind that curtain for several hours already, remember I started this thread... :)

20.[SOLVED] Epic Orchestra gone? 9/10/2016 6:04:30 PM

@Killahurts: you pointed me in the right direction. I've double-checked and realized that – how silly of me – with all the shuffling around between master and slave machines I didn't transfer the Epic Orchestra license between my two eLicensers. I've just confirmed that VIP still loads Epic Orchestra as it should so this has nothing to do with VEP6 or anything like that. I suggest you have a closer look on your system, maybe we've both been similarly absent-minded :)

21.[SOLVED] Epic Orchestra gone? 9/9/2016 12:14:54 PM

Thanks. Tried, doesn't help.

22.MIR Pro Instrument Groups (feature request) 9/9/2016 7:25:06 AM

I agree with everything you wrote. Like I wrote above, the idea of adding the 8 + 6 + 6 + 4 Dimension players to my already dense setup is not very encouraging.

If this ever gets implemented by VSL, here's a couple of other ideas:

  • Allow an icon to belong to more than one group (think of tagging or taxonomy). This way you could hide e.g. all brass, all Dimension Brass, only one row of players etc.
  • In the same way VIP patches are loaded on MIDI demand (by setting them to the disabled state first), MIR instruments could be enabled and displayed only when audio is present, and stay enabled until explicitly disabled again. This would allow using the same template, sound & room color for different compositions, while showing only the instruments playing in a specific piece. You don't need to see the entire orchestra all the time. Think of classical pieces where the choir or soloists sit down just to get out of the way... Personally I wouldn't mind if this resulted in a small audio glitch or muted note when the instrument is activated, it would be just like having the first note not playing when auto-enabling a cell in VIP.

Just my 2c.

Still the case in VEP6, it seems.

25.MIR Pro Instrument Groups (feature request) 9/8/2016 1:07:19 PM

Thanks Dietz. Hope this will be added soon. At least keeping the icons the same size when zooming the venue shouldn't be difficult to implement IMHO.
