1.Automation Tutorials for VEP7? 7/22/2020 4:00:55 AM

I've been using VEP for 5 or 6 years now, and I use 7 regularly with both Notion and Studio One to host Kontakt and other instruments.

I've never been able to figure out how automation works.  I currently record automation tracks in Studio One to control parameters like dynamics, expression, vibrato etc. in my VI's.  Am I missing something with VEP automation?  Should I be using that instead?

I've searched and found no good tutorials on the subject, just Paul telling me how great it is going to be.  No one telling me how to use it, and the manual is equally (un)helpful.

Thanks!

Mike

2.SYNCHRON-ized Dimension Strings? 11/19/2018 1:54:44 AM

Anyone heard any rumors about such a thing?  I'm hoping that it's coming.

Here's the fix for the issue of keyswitches not appearing in S1 drag and drop, which fixes the issue:

Hi Michael,

I heard back from our Product Manager and he recommends setting the option to "send note-offs" in the rules editor prior to sending to Studio One.  This may be why my export was working and yours was not.  He told me that some DAWs require this option as others do not.  Let us know what you find out.

Can anyone provide any further insight or ideas?

Thank you

I responded to the tech support reply.  Still waiting...

Will update if I hear back.

Hi Michael,

I just did some testing with this scenario and it seems that if you export your file to MIDI and then manually drag that MIDI file into Studio One, you will get the keyswitches.  If you just send note data from Notion to Studio One, it will drop the keyswitches.  Let me know if you are seeing the same thing.

Best Regards,

I can confirm it works this way in Reaper.
You'll notice a keyswitch value for every note in the score, due to be able to play the right articuation at any position you'll start playback.
Hope it helps.
Cheers

Thanks, Fabio.  I got it to work with Cubase, but not with Studio One, but I've just looked at it briefly.

Does anyone know if there is a way to also include the keyswitches during export? (e.g. for use/import of midi into a DAW)

Also when I try to use the Send to Studio One 3 (ScoreTransfer from Notion 6 to S1) the articulation switches/changes seem to be lost (Also checked the other CCs/changes)

Somehow I cant find the (simulated, great idea!) spiccatto in Notion. Could anyone be so kind and tell me where I can find it?

Thanks a lot

You're welcome!  I have the same problem, I've submitted a support ticket to Presonus regarding the issue.  I think something may have gotten broken with the recent Notion 6 update for Studio One 4.

I haven't tested, but the switches should export to MIDI AFAIK.

In my ruleset, spiccato is triggered by the staccatissimo symbol, but I see that's double assigned.  My bad!  I've just changed mine to be triggered by Staccatissimo Accent.  You can assign it to any symbol you like using the ruleset editor.

Enjoy!

Michael

Well, thanks for confirming my suspicions that this is a community of VSL snobs not worth paying much attention to.
Please don't lump everybody in with the individual whom you're addressing. Many of us appreciate the quality of VSL but are equally open to discovering comparable quality in other non-VSL libraries.

Point appreciated Acclarion, but it's a general sense I've gotten over many years of posting here.

I'm a big fan of VSL products as well, but I really am disapointed in the Synchron libraries.  What the offensive poster doesn't seem to realize is that there's a reason that VSL pursued the Synchron series, and it has to do I believe with competition from the likes of *gasp* Spitfire and others.  If VSL had such a great thing going, why did they change direction?

I own both the Dimension Strings libraries, and I agree with other posts, I wish VSL had continued evolving them.  They're great if you want to dive a mile deep, but sometimes you want a mile wide.

I think the player is nice, but lacking in some respects (humanization).

Honestly, with such limited articulations and techniques in the Synchron Strings, I wish I would have saved the money I spent on the pre-order and purchased Spitfire Symphonic Strings.  You get a complete set of beautifully recorded in-situ strings, multiple mic positions, with little lacking in terms of techniques and articulations (sordini, col legno, spiccato, sul tasto, sul pont, flautando, harmonics, brushed, digs, runs, falls, etc. etc.), don't have to wait forever for a player (runs on Kontakt) and there's a brilliant Universal Articulation Change Control system built in (I have one ruleset that controls ALL my Spitfire libraries, whether it's strings, winds, whatever).

The money I spent on Synchron would have got me more than halfway to purchasing a mature robust beautifully recorded in-situ library.

I frankly see the articulations and techniques available in Synchron as very limiting.  I will go to my Spitfire Chamber Strings instead every time for a more subtle nuanced sound.

And I don't intend to pay hundreds more for expansions.

Disappointed.

13.install sy strings extremely slow 6/22/2018 8:24:51 PM

My mistake, I thought you were referring to the download from VSL.

I have not experienced this slow installation on my iMac late 2012.  I installed directly to my SSD.  All installs so far took maybe 10 minutes tops.  Violins I, II, Violas and Cellos.

Odd that you're experiencing that slow install!

14.install sy strings extremely slow 6/22/2018 6:43:51 PM

Not exceptionally slow for me.  About what I would expect here.

Keep in mind that this may have more to do with your ISP capability than anything.  Try running an online speed test to see what kind of speeds your internet service provides.  Mine is currently about 100mbps on the machine I'm downloading to.

15.Strings - Spiccato, Staccato Accents, Etc. 6/22/2018 3:38:55 AM

Maybe I've missed something, but where are all the short articulations?  How does one achieve a spiccato, or a staccatto accent?

I'm confused.  Or did I miss some downloads?

Michael

16.Legato Technique 6/22/2018 2:32:53 AM

Is it necessary to overlap notes in SP to get a legato technique, and if so, is there an effect obtained by longer or shorter overlaps?

Thanks!

Michael

17.Synchron Player Rulesets for Notion6 6/22/2018 2:25:09 AM

I've created rulesets for Notion 6 for Synchron Player with Synchron Strings.

Some creativity was required as the Synchron Strings don't contain complete articulations and techniques (no spiccatto, no staccatto accents, no tenutos, no detaches, etc.).  I'd be interested to know if others have other approaches to reproducing some of these.

As "prules" is not an allowed file type for posting to the VSL community boards, you can find them here:

18.[SOLVED] Synchron Player Fail? 6/20/2018 6:16:06 AM

Thanks Paul, gotta follow the instructions!  Working now, the player is beautiful  Love the look and feel.

I was looking for a standalone player, I guess there isn't one?

19.[SOLVED] Synchron Player Fail? 6/20/2018 4:50:43 AM

Maybe I've missed something, but I've updated my elicenser, downloaded the synchron player, downloaded the libraries.

When I double click the synchron player installer it asks me to dfind the package info, which is no where to be found!

Help!?!?

20.Where's the Player? 5/22/2018 1:54:45 AM

Did I miss something? I see that the player is advertised as coming along with the FX library.  I've looked everywhere for where I can download it for the Synchron Strings I purchased... oh yeah, last year...

Can someone tell me where I can find it?  Or is it still MIA?

21.Orr - Cotswold Hill-Tune 5/13/2018 10:23:37 PM

Jos, thanks for listening and for your comments.  This was not my composition, it was written by Charles Wilfred Orr in 1939.  So sorry to hear of your colleague's death.

Regarding use of the DImension Strings, I'm always eager to learn to improve my craft.  Where to begin though?  Any further advice would be appreciated!

Michael

22.Orr - Cotswold Hill-Tune 5/13/2018 4:24:20 AM

Recorded with Dimension Strings.  They still sound great!

Reversing dB value with the settings suggested above, you should be able to decrease prominence of the violin sound. This way you would "thin out" the section's sound, emulating a reduced number of players on each divisi section. Is this what you want to do?

P.S. Just out of curiosity, why not employ Dimension strings, which you do have?

I like the sound of the new Synchron Strings, and I figured a lot of folks were experimenting with them.  Just wondered if anyone had run up against the divisi issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try.

Indeed, and I own DImension Strings which is probably the best solution I've seen yet for divisi (although some Kirk Hunter libraries offer a very nice approach).

But if "faking it" is out of the question, then it would seem that if I'm working on a piece with divisi (or mutes or col legno or spiccato or feathers, for that matter) then use of Synchron Strings is out of the question.

Also, if you want to be a purist about it, then "faking it" would also include a combination of the old standbys Orchestral Strings with Chamber Strings for the divisi.  Or adding solo strings in a larger orchestral mix to create detail.  Or using EQ, for that matter, to adjust the tone of any sample library.

To me, using a sample library implies and, in fact, requires some degree of "faking it".

Stephen, I'll have to play with that.

I have tried creating additional (duplicate) ensembles and panning them and adjusting volume in MirPro, and that gets close, but not quite there.
