1.Never mind 6/2/2021 2:46:33 PM

I may be reading too much into this, but I am wondering if the new website made another step towards marginalising VI.  If you look at the Products dropdown, VI series is in the "More" category along with freebies and Vienna key (which is on its way out).  It looks like VSL is quietly phasing out VI in favour of Synchron.  I hope I am wrong.  I really like their traditional approach with silent stage libraries.

3.VSL Software compatibility with Big Sur 11/13/2020 12:02:49 PM

Hi,

Are all of your software suites compatible with Big Sur?  I haven't come across an official announcement on the subject and  would like to know if it is safe to upgrade from a VSL perspective.  I am running VI Pro (w/Mir), Ensemble Pro, Suite Pro, and Synchron.

      Thanks

Loved your music and your video, Eloy.  Thank you for sharing.

5.How to make VSL Strings sound great (VI Library Video) 4/17/2020 1:48:56 PM

Exactly! Example I purchased Afflatus strings -truly a lovely library but, they have no player - the workflow became bad. So, I listened carefully to their beautiful violins "scene d'amour" patch and recreated it with multiple VSL VI string samples in one cell - you cannot tell the difference (using the mixer to adjust sample patch levels). Now I have the "Afflatus sounds" with a better workflow. Plus they are missing so many articulations. Another example- Metropolis ark-a great sounding library with BIG strings - you can recreate that sound with the VSL VI string series- use MIR Pro Teldex(same recording location as all Berlin libraries). VSL recorded real strings dry and gives you different halls to put them in -but, they never showed me (or you) IN A VIDEO that once you own all of the string VI series that you can combine and have virtully endless combinations. Instead you buy new string libraries in the hope that you will get the Holy Grail of strings. But once you buy the other libraries you realize it is not the Holy Grail. That is when I started to listen to what I liked about the other libraries and imitate them. Also once you move the second microphone in MIR Pro to the back of the room and adjust DB-WOW! VSL gives you the best tools- they are expensive, time consuming and complicated. But once you learn them and set up your template (many, many, many months) you can do anything your talent allows. Thank you, Eloy

... I totally agree.  There is a lot you can do with VSL if you know how to use the tools and can think outside the box to solve the problems you come up against.  That's where the "tricks of the trade" videos come in handy, like the one you kindly created for us.  They can save you a lot of time, money and frustration.

There are a couple of more gems out there that I found very helpful:

One from Stephen Limbaugh where he talks about his workflow in great detail.  The entire video is fantastic, but I love some of his tricks.  He uses for example the humaniser to create a custom vibrato when the vibrato articulation doesn't quite give him what he is looking for.  Stephen's video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_7gfkDDZEo&t=196s

Another one is from Corrado Trabuio.  He has a passage played by appassionata violins.  To increase the definition of the violins, he duplicates the track and assigns the copy to solo violin 1 which he places a bit closer to the microphone in MIR.  He then duplicates it again and assigns the second copy to solo violin 2 to create an additional desk.  That builds on some of the concepts that you were talking about in your video.  Corrado's video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZozZ74bATw&t=30s

Thank you again for creating the video.

  All the best

        Thorsteinn

6.How to make VSL Strings sound great (VI Library Video) 4/14/2020 3:50:34 PM

That was an excellentvideo, Eloy.  Thank you for taking the time to create it.  There are some very innovative ideas in here about how add additional texture to the strings.  I like the way you created a new "palette of sound" by stacking different articulations in the player.  It helps us extract new timbres from the librares we have rather than go shopping when we don't hear the sound we are looking for.

7.Vienna Instruments WALKTHROUGHS and TUTORIALS 3/22/2020 2:34:55 PM

Hi Paul,

I just wanted to say thank you to the team for the tutorials.  They are great and I would love to see more of them.  I believe one of the keys to success in this business is to flood youtube with tutorials on how to make great mock-ups with your product.  Demonstrate workflows and tips on how to turn a poor or average "synthy" moch-up to a track that is full of life using VSL libraries.  I also thought that "Stravinsky: Rite of Spring - Walkthrough by Stephen Limbaugh" on youtube was superb.  I am a big fan of Vienna Instruments (less so of Synchron Player, sorry).  Looking forward to more videos in the future.

     All the best

          Thorsteinn

8.Orchestral Strings - VIOLINS 2 5/4/2019 3:53:15 PM

You can achieve the same result by transposing all notes by a full tone up or down and using the pitch wheel in the other direction. I use the Midi-modifier plugin in Cubase for that. If you use Cubase I could give you the settings for that.

Best, Ben

Thank you guys for your response.  Thanks Ben for the clarification and offering to share your settings.  I am using Logic so I suspect I won't be able to make use of it.  I'll see if I can find a workaround to create a second violin using the transpose technique in Logic.

9.Orchestral Strings - VIOLINS 2 5/4/2019 9:13:13 AM

Hi,

I recently bought the Orchestral Strings bundle and have a question regarding one of the sections under Patches.  In the "Violins Orchestra" section, there is a sub-section labelled "90 VIOLINS 2".  It is a small section with limited set of articulations.  It doesn't appear to be documented in the manual.  Are they intended to be used as 2nd Violins?

    Many thanks

          Thorsteinn

10.Synchron Player, High CPU, and stuttering 11/11/2018 7:46:30 PM

Hi there,

I bought Smart Orchestra a month ago and I keep having issues with the CPU continually maxing out at 100% with a lot of associated stuttering and snap, pop, and crackle through the speakers.  Is anyone else having these issues?  I have a one year old iMac and 40GB of memory so the hardware shouldn't be a problem.

     Thanks

            Thorsteinn
