1.exs/vsl horror story HELP!! 3/19/2007 2:58:52 PM
Hi Morpheus,
just as an idea, did you have Logic open when you relinked your instruments?
This might explain the:

"I have tried loading up some VSLs into new songs, and they work fine, with the exception of the set of instruments I was using on this film - UNFORTUNATELY!!! - these still cause chaos."

If this is the case, please relink again without Logic running at the same time.

(why this? Logic sometimes will write back to disk the instruments you loaded, when you quit it. If you relink your library with Logic running, there's a possibility that Logic will write back to disk the "non-relinked" instruments)

Well, those videos are just very short "demos".
We'll have more demos, but also tutorial videos, done with a different approach.

One thing that I'd kindly ask you all to keep in mind: I really do not want to abuse of the *great* hospitality of the VSL forum to talk about Redmatica stuff.

Plowman,
I just checked and it's indeed a 1.0 glitch: tomorrow we'll have a fix for that.

Regarding "how to use Keymap", in February we'll have a set of downloadable short video tutorials showing exactly how to do things, and while the application is very deep, it's actually simple and intuitive once you see how it's supposed to be used.

I'm still at NAMM, so my replies might take more time than usual.

7.exs24 relinking problem with Logic / odd sample names 12/15/2006 8:57:54 AM
I meant that ExsManager can recognize the mangled form of the name (the one with the shortened name and dash plus numbers added) in the instrument, search the sample with the full name (but you can see how there can be ambiguities here), and then rewrite the sample name in the mangled form inside the instrument.

Needless to say that the suggestion here is to use shorter names, because there are some limitations in what you can relink.

However, if you have a case where after a relink the instrument doesn't load, please send me the instrument and the sample so we can check here what's happening exactly.

I'm a bit late in reading and replying to this email.
Without going into technical details,
what you see is correct, and you do not need to change anything.
It's simply Logic that will use a "mangled" filename when the name is longer than 31 characters. ExsManager knows how to handle this automatically.

I've wondered if Keymap might automate this cherry-picking process. Deleting a whole velocity group is easy, but individually picking and stretching zones is tedious in the current EXS editor.

In Keymap there's indeed a "simplify mapping" function for that, which only requires a couple parameters and a mouse click. You can also "cherry pick" zones and let Keymap expand them automatically.

Generally speaking, we have found that simplified mappings, coupled with velocity *and* note crossfades give very good results.
Here's a short no-frills test video about how "simplify mapping, note/velocity crossfading and dynamics remap" works:

We will have a full set of movies for all the important Keymap features, because, as they say, "seeing is believing"....

R.K.
I can assure you that the scanning is fast but does *not* make mistakes.
Relinking one folder at a time is not reccomended, as it's essentially a waste of (user) time.

About the original problem I see two possible factors:
-are we sure that you are scanning all samples, and not just a part of them?
-do you really have those samples on your drive?

You can easily see the reason for your problem this way:
- go into advanced mode
- set all folders, and if you need them, multiple sample locations (paths)
- analyze
- check the stats on the right: how many incomplete instruments you get?
- go into instrument view and select "show incomplete instruments"
- select an instrument and you will see the missing samples in red
- now check that those missing samples are on disk
- if yes, check that those missing samples are in the folders you set ExsManager to scan

12.Redmatica EXSManager 1/20/2006 11:50:27 PM
You don't actually need to rescan with project manager.

The problem is that project manager shows you the data from its own database, and not from the real files. When you relink the instruments, project manager still goes to check the (now old) data inside the database.

So, you will need to rescan with project manager only if you are going to use its features.

In Keymap you can actually use surround sample files (>2 channels).
When exporting to Exs24, it will automaticallly split those in stereo or mono files and will use the Exs24 multiple out feature to send those files to the surround outs...

17.Redmatica Not Seeing Vienna-Please Help 9/11/2005 2:56:30 PM
Hello Chris,
you always have to remember that ExsManager does *not* follow aliases, so you simply have to point it to the "true" folders/drives.

Crashes are bad.
Please send me the instrument (.exs) and the crash log at so we can see the reason for this. As this is a "personal" problem, it's maybe better we continue by email.

Regarding irvind's load times after merging, do you consider that normal?

It's always *very* hard to predict a performance, as there are *so many* variables here. Cpu, ram swapping, exs24 streaming settings, disk speed, how the files are spread on the disk, size of merged files, are these files fragmented, how much Logic load time for a song is really related to Exs instruments, etc...

I guess Irvind will have to experiment a little to see what's best there....

So I've never understood what more information Logic may be seeking than what EM has already put into the instrument. It's never been a problem, just a point of curiosity.

Regarding samplemerged instruments, the very first time you load them after you created them, Exs24 completes the merging process and (if you check the instrument sizes) those merged instruments will become much smaller. This might take a couple seconds more than usual.

For normal instruments, the difference you see is simply a matter of caching some data in ram from disk.

21.Redmatica exsManager 8/14/2005 7:43:32 AM
Irvind,
if you are simply relinking (i.e not moving samples, etc) you will also have to enable "force refresh for all references" (and of course "check and fix"), otherwise EM will "optimize-out" the check and fix.

Per is not correct. The "white noise" problem is caused by:

- the developer overwriting 16 bit samples with 24 (or 24 with 16)
- supplying 16 and 24 bit identically named samples in the same library

In neither of the two situation you have "clones" as the 16 and 24 bit files are very different.

Note that samplemerged instruments *can't* be fixed and needs to be merged again after you fix the original intruments.

Andrea at Redmatica

(edited to include note about merged insts)

can you please explain more in detail?
Maybe i can give you an answer...

23.Redmatica exsManager 8/13/2005 9:19:05 PM
Irvind,
the "white noise problem" is caused by a format mismatch between the instruments and the samples. This happens when the library creator (Sampletekk in this case) creates (translates?) an instrument to Exs format, and then later overwrites the samples with another set of different format. For example: overwriting the 16 bit samples with 24 bit samples.

As you can imagine, the instrument file still "thinks" that the samples are 16 bits, while they are 24 bits. The result is white noise.

Normally this problem doesn't apppear to the user, as Exs24 recognizes the problem upon loading and repairs the format information.

ExsManager let you do that too, by enabling "check and fix format mismatches" option in "Options/References". This is normally disabled as our philosophy in ExsManager advanced mode is "everything is disabled unless the user enables it".

So, just enable it, relink your instruments and they will all be repaired automatically (no more white noise).

Btw, Sampletekk knows the problem and has access to ExsManager so i wonder why the library has not been fixed.

Best Regards
Andrea at Redmatica

25.what exactly does REDMATICA do? 4/21/2005 8:15:24 AM
Hello Hermitage,
unfortunately, no, not yet distribution in Russia.

If you don't like ordering online because of the credit card, you can always order online with bank transfer. From our personal experience, Shareit.com (our partner for collecting online orders) is a *very* serious company, and not a single problem emerged in the past two years with them. Also, we do not receive *any* of your credit card data.

I'd say you are in safe hands.
