1.Orchestral Prog Fusion 10/9/2022 9:55:43 AM

Hi!

For those with plenty of free time and patience, here is my latest composition and my biggest project to date. It's a mixture of prog rock, jazz fusion and classical.

It is mixed on the MIR 3d Synchron Stage, and features lots of VI Dimension Strings, VI Woodwinds, Synchron Percussion and the Synchron Yamaha CFX.

It is still a demo as I would like to overdub real soloists over the virtual orchestra, and it definitely needs a real drummer (there is a drum solo currently absent from 24:20 - 24:45).

Anyway here it is. Enjoy!

Jon

2.Logic 10.5 + VSL 7 5/24/2020 3:10:49 AM

The biggest benefit for using VEP7 with Logic in my experince, is that because Logic is so full of bugs and crashes so frequently, VEP7 significantly reduces project re-load time whenever this happens.

3.VI Pro Retina / HiDPI Support 3/6/2020 8:54:53 AM

Thanks! I've been hoping for a bigger VI pro 2 for years.

Although I do agree, 200% is too large, and I have a 5k screen. 150% would probably be better, and an option for various sizes would be nice. I will probably still use 100% most of the time because at 200% I can barely see my DAW.

4.Dropping out notes in VI Pro/VEP 7/7/2019 11:41:12 PM
Hi

No solution I'm afraid, which is extremely annoying. The only workaround I have come up with is to use bounce-in-place for each line when I want to audition it. Mixing correctly in real time isn't possible.
5.Future of Vienna Instruments 6/19/2019 12:19:21 PM

I really hope that VI Pro is continutally updated and remains the flagship sampler. I don't like using the Synchron Player, because the 'dimensions' make it much slower and awkward to use. The matrix system in VI Pro is sooo much better.

A resizable interface for VI Pro would be nice ;)

I typically find the VI series more useful than the synchron series, except for percussion & pianos. VI + MIR is generally superior to Synchron IMO.

Thanks Ben,

The thread setting is in deed set to 1 in VEP. I have just pulled my DS template out of VEP and back into Logic, which has slightly improved performance and also freed up about 2 gigs of RAM. There are still a lot of dropped notes, however, which is making composing difficult as I cannot hear the notes when writing a fast passage or for a large ensemble. I can't figure out where the bottleneck is.

8.Dropping out notes in VI Pro/VEP 6/10/2019 6:32:40 AM

Hi,

I am having issues with notes dropping out during playback using VI Pro and VEP7.

The problem occurs with VI Pro on its own, but is significantly worse while using VEP7, to the point that it is extremely difficult to compose while using VEP so will probably ditch using it for VSL instruments.

My CPU and HD meters have plenty of headroom, and the voices bar is going red and notes are dropping out, despite being nowhere near the maximum amount of voices. I have experimented with the various settings in VI Pro (streaming threads, allocated voices) and nothing seems to prevent this from happening.

Computer is iMac Pro 8 core, samples are streaming from Lacie Bolt 3 SSD. My orchestral tempate is based around Dimension Strings. In Logic X.

I have 6gig of ram unused so I doubt that is the issue.

9.Floating Plugin GUIs in VEP? 5/27/2019 9:50:12 AM

I am very surprised that this feature does not exist - I assumedthat there must have beena setting somewhere, becuase it seems like such a vital thing for aprogram like VEP to be able to do. It's quite the workflow killeras itis now. I may just end up getting cubase while its on special - then I won't have to put up with Logic's bugs and hopefully won't need to use VEP to compensate anymore.

Cubase has bugs too. swhat problems are you having with LogicPro? Maybe I can help...

I'm sure it does. But some of the recent bugs I have encountered have caused me to lose lots of work and prevented me from working for days on end while I find workarounds. Thanks for the offer for assistance, but so far even Logic support have had no ideas.

The first problem I encountered was due to Logic having kernel panic if using Sampling Modeling Brass/Kontakt, causing crashes among other strange problems, as outlined here: https://support.native-i...e-Has-Disappeared-en-us-
Ultimately NI blamed Apple and Apple blamed NI, so this was never resolved. The solution was to load SM Brass into VE Pro, which works well and is the primary reason I use VE Pro.

The next issue I had that was a show stopper was that Logic would crash every single time if I even scroll to view a certain section of a project. I am currently working with Logic support to locate the cause of this occurrence.

The next problem I had was audio files not loading at all (blank waveforms in audio regions/silent audio), explained here: https://discussions.appl...50380991?r_s_legacy=true although I think I have finally found a solution to this one (while troubleshooting I ported my entire template into VEP as an experiment). I think telling Logic to recreate file overviews may work. If it does, I will probably pull my template out of VEP (until this feature becomes part of VEP), except for SM Brass, which is completely non functional in Logic without VEP.

Thanks,
Jon

I heard of some Windows 3rd party programs that can turn any window to an "always on top" window. But for MAC I don't know if something like this exists.

Metric Halo's MIO console does it, so I assume it is just not a feature that is useful for most everyday applications. For something like VEP, though, it seems quite essential.

To VSL, please consider this as a feature request.

12.Floating Plugin GUIs in VEP? 5/25/2019 12:21:09 PM

Hi,

I have recently moved my template to VEP to compensate for deficiencies in Logic X.

Is it possible to have your instrument/plugin GUI windows 'float', so that you can see them while working in your DAW? It's especially annoying using the VI matrix because whenever I click in the piano roll to edit keyswitches - I can no longer see the VI matrix without making the Logic window annoyingly tiny.

13.synchron vs VIPro 4/15/2019 5:13:36 AM
MIR Pro is one of the most powerful plugins ever created. It is much more than a reverb plugin. It leaves most other reverbs I have tried in the dust. It is unrealistic to expect a project like MIR to be free.
14.Synchronized Dimension Strings: Playing by individual players in one instance of SyPlayer 4/11/2019 11:39:46 PM
If you're in Logic, try using track stacks to manage divisi writing. I find it very convenient!
15.Dimension Strings III 4/4/2019 2:26:25 AM

Yay! DS3!

I haven't been this exited about a piece of software in ages!

I do have a question, though. Does it have vibrato/non vibrato or progressive vibrato variations, like in DS1?

Cheers

I don't know what politics has to do with this, and we're definitely not talking about science. We're talking about marketing, and the only 'facts' are sales figures - and the fact is that there will be numerous users who will not up/downgrade with the current pricing structure.
17.VE Pro 7 and Epic Orchestra 2.0 3/3/2019 10:29:33 AM

Well, only DM Brass. I really like that library and the crossgrade wasn't that expensive. I wouldn't touch the synchronised string crossgrades though - far too expensive for an inferior product.

18.VE Pro 7 and Epic Orchestra 2.0 3/3/2019 4:42:52 AM

Lately it almost feels as if VSL are brainstorming marketing ideas to push away their long term customers. I have certainly spent well upwards of $10K on VSL libraries and software in the 8 years or so that I have been a user. I am definitely a fan (especially of  their classic VI & MIR products), and a massive part of my workflow is based around VSL products.

Recent marketing strategies (sys preorder, synchronised libs, now this) however are leaving me disillusioned and increasingly tentative about purchasing new VSL products. I bought VEP6 under then impression that it would always include enough licenses to enable networking - that was part of the deal - networking is THE major feature of VEP. Had I been aware that VEP7 would be a functional downgrade - there is no way I would have bought VEP6.

It seems as if the synchronised libs were like VSL testing the waters to see how many old users would buy something that they alread have, again. Obviously that worked (I fell into the trap unfortunately - mostly out of fear that the superior VI Pro Player will eventually stop being supported), and now they have learned that they can make their old users re-buy things, presumably because it worked the first few times.

I'm not going to play this game anymore. As it stands, I will not be buying VEP7 unless the new features (that are not FX) are good enough to SIGNIFICANTLY improve my workflow (and my expectations for VEP7 are low - how good could it be if you don't even know what the features are). If it incuded 3 licenses, as I was under the impression that it would when I bought VEP6, I would most likely have bought it once the features become available. It is unlikely that I'll ever preorder anything from VSL ever again - DS3 would be the only exeption to this, as long as it wasn't a synchronised version.

Don't push away customers. That doesn't make sense.

I agree. I have no interest in EO2, either.

20.VE Pro 7 and Epic Orchestra 2.0 2/19/2019 3:34:05 AM
I recently bought VEP 6 & Vienna Suite Pro... so not seeing any point in upgrading (tbh I probably wouldn't have bought them if I knew this was coming). I will probably skip this, certainly if you need to rebuy each license individually - that would just be insane. The only difference I can see between VEP6 & 7 is the integrated suite FX, so I'm not sure why users of both have to pay at all for this, unless there's some other serious features under the hood.
21.VSL Steinway D: The BEST (resolved) 1/21/2019 6:04:30 AM

The new update is great. I do agree though, a velocity curve editor would be the best addition to Synchron Pianos, & Vienna Imperial Player, that I can currently think of.

I can't get the pans to work in Logic. Is there a fix on the way?

24.Logic 10.4.2 and VE/VI 10/3/2018 9:05:48 AM
Yes I am also using MIR. The delay seems to happen while MIR is loading.
25.Logic 10.4.2 and VE/VI 10/1/2018 1:39:00 PM

Yes, I also have considerably longer project load times since the update. Logic X takes ages to load VI Pro compared to other plugs. I can't comment on VE.
