1.[SOLVED] Dimension Strings Panning 4/2/2015 7:37:27 PM

EDIT: I withdraw the question.  I did not realize that the pan was set independently for each active cell (articulation).  Problem solved.  Thanks.

Using Dimension Strings in the Vienna Instruments Pro player, on the advanced tab, there is a mixer that allows you to pan each player in the section.  (In this case, I am using all Cellos.)

As soon as I start my song in Sonar, however, I see the panning controls all go back to their default positions.

How do I pan each instrument where I want it?

Thanks.

Konrad

PS Using Sonar 64-bit on an i7 Windows 7 machine.  12 GBs memory.  Vienna libraries are on a 1TB Samsung Pro SSD.

2.Getting the Basses? 3/3/2014 3:06:16 PM

The direct link worked--thanks.

I logged in and went to my user area when I saw the announcement and could not find any download link.  I went back and tried again after your first reply.

I am not clear how to navigate to the download in my personal area, but since you sent the direct link, I am OK.  I would be good to know for future downloads.

Thanks again.

3.Getting the Basses? 3/3/2014 6:35:54 AM

OK, I bought Dimension Strings and have the violins, cellos, and violas.  I see basses are out now but I did not receive an email with download instructions.

I buy a lot of software so I don't remember the details of how this works, but when I log on to VSL it is not obvious to me what I am supposed to do.

How do I get the basses?

4.Can't Turn On Reverb - RESOLVED 2/19/2014 9:18:56 PM

Resolved

5.Can't Turn On Reverb - RESOLVED 2/19/2014 9:07:39 PM

In Vienna Pro there was a button besiude the reverb slider.  When I downloaded Violas, I was required to upgrade Vienna Instruments Pro.  Now there is a gear shape and a byp button but the reverb slider.  Neither turns on the reverb.

Can you help, please?

6.Can't Load Violas - RESOLVED 1/23/2014 3:17:07 AM

Never Mind - I Got It Now.  Thanks!

7.Can't Load Violas - RESOLVED 1/23/2014 3:12:25 AM

I get an error message that says I can't load a matrix saved with a newer version of VI Pro.

OK, so I assume I need to update VI Pro, correct? It looks like I have version 2.3.12334 (64 Bit)

If that's correct, where do I do that?

8.How to Download VIolas 1/23/2014 3:08:56 AM

Thanks.  Got it downloaded.  The directions in the manual and on the site seemed a bit unclear but it worked out.  Appreciate the response.

9.How to Download VIolas 1/22/2014 1:24:53 AM

I don't remember how I did this with the violins and cellos, but folloiwng the directions on the forum is not working for me.

•  The download did not start automatically after downloading the Download Manager.

•  DOulbe clicking the DOwnload Manager opens the application, but nothing happens.

•  To make things more confusing, there is a DOWNLOAD link by the violas on the VSL page, which I don't understand if Download Manager downloads for you.

What am I supposed to do?

10.Updated Front Page - "Violas Coming Soon" 1/16/2014 11:02:24 PM

Although I understand your point, I like this update.  Itmakes me believe we are not too far off from seeing the violas.

11.Unable to achieve a good Orchestral Sound 1/11/2014 7:30:02 PM

This is probably not what you want to hear, but it could be your system.  Legatos from my spinning drive often sound too much like a Mellotron when they stream from the disk.  For this reason I am upgrading to an SSD for the string libraries.

Please don't go out and spend money based on this post: you may be able to get the sound you are looking for by following the other suggestions.  But this is something to keep in mind if you can't get the sound you want.

If your disk is fast, defragged, and has lots of free space (like 50% or more), then maybe the disk is not the issue.  I just wanted you to have all possible information.  When everything is working right and programmed right, VSL is awesome.

12.Where are all the Orchestral Strings demos? 1/4/2014 8:30:19 PM

I have several string libraries and have auditioned many others.  I don't think there is anything better than Vienna.  Also, Vienna is much easier to use than some other products.  The matrix concept of loading sounds makes it fast and efficient to work with as many or as few articulations as you need.

Dimension Strings are incredible and I use them a lot; but I still love Vienna's orchestral strings.  They work for pop, orchestral, and film equally well.  They are more pristine and accurate than other companies' products and they sound large enough for anything without being overly epic.  I would also add that while they are not cheap, in the long run it is better to buy the gold standard product than to spend $500 or $1,000 over and over on different libraries hoping to get what you need.

Good luck.

P.S. I am not associated with VSL.  I am a songwriter and producer who loves strings and has some strong feelings about which work better. :-)

13.Dimension String Trills 1/1/2014 10:18:42 PM

In an earlier post, I said I was sorry that DS did not include sampled trills and we had a good discussion about that.  Here is my question, though:

Four, six, or eight violinists would not trill in exactly the same way.  For example, if the composer called for a half-step trill starting on D, the violinists would not all change from D to D# to D at the same time over and over again.  For this reason, I don't understand how to make DS violin trills sound realistic.  I can program all the notes but then all the violins in a group are playing exactly together.

Of course, I can establish 8 instances of single violins, but that is an unreasonable amount of work just to create a trill when the violins are playing the same part otherwise.

This is frustrating me a bit.  Can someone offer advice?  Thanks very much.

Konrad

14.Any tips or tricks in thickening Violons Dimension Strings? 12/8/2013 11:39:31 PM

And possibly use different Humaize values in the normal and transposted versions.

This is an aboslutely valid question; but I must say that I am quite surprised by how full Dimension Strngs sound by themselves.  I use it instead of Orchestral Strings quite often.  It is a bit more "present" than orchestral strings, if that makes sense, but it sounds gorgeous.

15.Save a Set of Articulations 11/29/2013 8:21:33 PM

Whether you call it a matrix or a preset, here is what I want to do:

• I have a song in Sonar X1 that uses Dimension Strings violins and Vienna Instruments Pro.

• I have selected a set of articulations.

• I want to save this set-up so I don't have to recreate it in other instances and in other songs.

• Problem: The only way I can see to save this is by clicking the disk icon.  When I do that, VI Pro says, "Overwrite Exsiting Preset?"  I am afraid to say YES because I don't know what that means.  I DO NOT want to overwrite any factory matrices.

How do I save my set of articulations?

Thanks.

16.Any Update or Rumor on Dimension Violas Release Date? 10/2/2013 4:54:14 PM
17.Dim-Strings Basses or Violas are next ? 8/23/2013 2:09:21 AM

Violas would make the most sense.

18.DS Trills 8/1/2013 2:39:49 AM

First, I think VSL is by far the best product for any orchestral needs, and I tell this to everyone I know and I mention it in the other technical forums (Sonar, etc.).  So, no complaints with Vienna.

Second, it is great that the rep trills option is implemented in DS and I am glad it is working well for some.

Finally, however, I wish that the prerecorded trills were offered in additon.  The ones in the other string collections sound great, and I think they sound much better than the sequenced samples in DS.  Plus, it is a lot more work to get a simple trill without the prerecorded option.  I just can't imagine how it would have hurt to have both options.

The DS samples are already set, however so I don't want to waste everyone's time.  This is just my opinion.  DS is still a fantastic product and all the VSL offerings are clearly best in class for both simplicity and ease of use.

Thanks for the great discussion.

19.DS Trills 7/26/2013 2:24:45 PM
20.DS Trills 7/25/2013 11:36:49 PM

I created a test project and loaded the matrix you recommended.  If I understand, this means I would need to have two matrices loaded in VI Pro: one for all the "normal" playing and one to use the special sequences (like trills).  That is not as convenient as using the trills in the orchestral strings, but I could make it work.  The question would be whether it made more sense to do that or just write out the trills myself using the standard matrix, and which would sound better.

Oddly, some of the mordents and other sequences had a lot of popping and clicking.  I'm not sure what is going on with those.

I am disappointed that such an otherwise complete collection did not include half and whole step trills.

Thanks.  I do appreciate your help and I love DS.

21.Shopping for better solo instruments 7/24/2013 2:48:32 AM

In general, Special Edition and Special Edition + give you a lot.  You may not need it all now, but it is way less expensive that buying individual things and adding on.  But, of course, it all depends on your need.

For the record, I have SE and SE+ from Vienna, plus Dimension Strings.  (When I bought SE and SE+ things were packaged a little differently, but the same principle applies.)  I also have Hollywood Strings Diamond from EastWest but I don't use it much.

22.DS Trills 7/24/2013 2:21:51 AM

Paul, Thank you.  Your videos are always world-class.

I did get a bit lost in the two on APP, though.

1.  At first, I thought I understood that you would set a specific key (probably outside the instrument's normal range) to trigger a sequence.  For example, if I wanted a trill on the F# above Middle C, I would set that up in the sequencer and trigger it with some other key, like an F# four octaves above Middle C.  That way, I could use the normal range of the of the instrument as usual.

2.  Later, however, in the video, the demostrator was triggering the same sequence with different keyboard notes to play the sequence in different keys,  At that point I decided I did not understand.

3.  Also, I was very unclear on the part about slots, but we can save that quesiton for another day.

Short question: I want to use all the normal notes within the range of a violin and change articulations by keyswitches, as always; however, during certain passages, I need a trill from the sequencer.  What do I do?

Thanks again.

23.DS Trills 7/23/2013 10:57:48 AM

Thanks, Paul.  I guess I do not know how to use that.

24.DS Trills 7/23/2013 1:23:47 AM

DS Violins are great, but I must say that I miss the half and whole step trills that are in the other VSL string libraries.  I sepnt a lot of time trying to get a good trill in DS.  A similar line in my Orch Violins was a simple matter of a note and a keyswitch.

Having the performance trills is great, but it is a lot of work to program a simple trill.

While it is fantastic to have the Perf Trill, is there a reason that the "automatic" trills were not included?  Or am I overlooking some simple control, perhaps?

25.VI Pro + Dimension Violins: Pitch Bend 7/23/2013 1:18:25 AM

Thanks.  I got it to respond to programmed pitch wheel messages, so there must be something strange going on with the keyboard.
