1.Using Sine Player Surround Microphones in VEpro 7 surround 9/30/2022 8:31:38 PM

Thus far, I have always been using VEpro in stereo, as I could still use a surround master in Cubase and route the surround microphones to LS/RS. But now I figured out that using VEpro in surround has many advantages for using Synchron libraries and I also just test MIR 3D, which cannot be used in surround without VEpro running in surround. So, how can I route a SINE instrument with main and surround microphones accordingly to L/R and LS/RS?

2.Kontakt 7 VST3 only? 9/30/2022 8:26:06 PM

Yup! I agree! This should be a priority! VST2 is not standard anymore since Steinberg announced not maintaining it any longer. This should have been the last call for any developer to start implementing VST3. I really hope this will not be used to justify a paid update.

3.Feature Request - Vienna Assistant - Program Location 9/30/2022 8:17:33 PM

I would like to ask you to look into one problem: if you are on MacOS, you probably have dozens - if not hundred - of apps on your computer. That is why I personally try to make sub-folders within the Apps-folder, e.g. "VSL". I know about Launchpad of course, however, I also want to keep the apps-folder clean.

The problem with Vienna Assistant is that you cannot specify a folder to save apps into! You can do that for the samples, but not for the apps, which seems a bit unfortunate to me ...

The way I usually handle that is to just drop the apps into the folder VSL after the installation/update. But with Vienna Assistant, I don't get any notification when there is an update. Rather, all of the apps I did already install appear to be "not installed". Could you consider implementing an option to specify such a subfolder within the macOS apps folder? Thanks

4.VEpro 7 bug with SINE player 4/30/2022 2:29:21 PM

However fast you do it: a crash should not happen! That means I am not the only one who is getting crashes related to handling the UI.

5.VEpro 7 bug with SINE player 4/29/2022 4:54:54 PM

Ok, I See now, that this is not only with SINE. It happens with Kontakt as well. I have found a perfectly reproducible recipe to crash VEpro (and Cubase with it). You just switch to any Instrument-UI, edit something the via mouse and use the cursor key to move up the instrument list ... boom! Works every time for me. Don't you guys have that problem?

My list of problems with SINE in general is long, however! I am surely gonna send it to OT-support, Tobias. It will just take me some weeks to get that list ready, I am afraid. :-)

6.VEpro 7 bug with SINE player 4/21/2022 9:12:38 PM

I have found some problems here with OT SINE in VEpro. I am on an iMac Pro with the latest macOS Monterey and also the latest version of Cubase, VEpro7 and SINE.

The most obvious and easily reproducible is this: if you have several VST instances of SINE loaded into a VEpro server instance, loading the file fresh, the Sine Window is out of sight when you click the first track. That repairs itself when clicking the second track. The SINE plugin is now editable. Now I use the cursor keys to switch between different SINE instances - no problem! Then, I switch to a different tab in my SINE instance (e.g. to the mixer tab). After that, the next time I switch tracks with the cursor keys, VEpro crashes.

7.Vienna Assistant cannot finish download 4/15/2022 11:12:42 PM
I have successfully downloaded most of my libraries, but some have problems. After the app crashing sometimes during the install (that happened quite often ...) Synchron Strings I optimized Content Stereo Mics reached 57,42 GB / 57,42 GB, 100%, however, the clock never reaches the zero mark. Restarting the app leads to the download starting at different counts again. This time it started with 33% and I have observed this a couple times now with this particular library. What can I do about that?
8.Bosendorfer Imperial with iLok? 4/15/2022 11:01:10 PM

+1 I think it is a bad thing that there will be no way of further using the Vienna Imperial as soon as licenser software won't be working any longer. Discontinued or not: that is not fair to the people who bought it once.

9.Option to automatically change X-Fade and Velocity per articulation 11/29/2019 5:26:15 PM

Hi Paul,

thanks! Got it! I have watched those tutorial, it is just some time ago ...

What threw me: you can only see this option with short notes selected. Now that I know that, i found the option. :-) This is, what I was looking for, wonderful! Then I would like to make only a slight suggestion: for short notes, this should be off by default. Maybe not essential, but a tiny thing that would make using VSL a bit more intuitive, as this is how the majority of libraries work. Thank you!

10.Option to automatically change X-Fade and Velocity per articulation 11/29/2019 4:48:58 PM

I mostly like VIpro and Synchron Player. There are some things I prefer how they are hadled in most Kontakt-Libraries, however.

I want to start with the most important to me: When I have short notes (Staccato or Spiccato) I prefer using Velocity for dynamics. When I play medium to long notes, I prefer using a controller so shape the sound. How this is solved in VIpro or Synchron player is that you can globaly change that for all articulations, which can also be remotely changed. While that might be great for some, it is not to me. How I would like to see that is having the option to descide per articulation, how it is handle, automatically. At least as an option. I would really like to see that feature both for VIpro and Synchron Player.

Ho do you guys see that? Both oter VSL users and staff? Almost any Library I know with Keyswitches uses Velocity for short notes and CC for longs. On some you can even decide it for sourself (e.g. Capsule). Having to switch that manually really seems counter-intuitive to me.

11.MIDI EFFECTS WITHIN VEPro? 10/24/2018 6:49:13 PM
A big +1 to that! This is actually always the thing where I face limits of what can be done to easily customize your template! One library only allows you to automate certain parameters while the other only works with CCs. And Cubase on the other side also limits you to use all the workflows in certain ways. What I want is mostly pretty simple stuff, like being able to control the microphone mixer of all instruments in a template globally. That would be possible through automation parameters from Cubase side, but it only works for some libraries, as automation cannot be turned to CC in Kontakt (actually it can be, burnout requires you to change the scripting for every single patch!).
In this crazy market with every developer cooking Bosnien soup, it seems only logical to create a configurable matrix before each VST. Something like a Kontakt Multi Script with user designed GUI and all sorts of ways to route and change midi commandos and automation.
12.VEpro crashing Cubase 9.5 10/6/2018 3:40:47 PM

Thanks Paul! I am afraid, I cannot do that, as it is a hang, not a crash. Cubase simply won't go past setting up some mixer settings and then nothing happens and I have to force-quit Mac OS (High Sierra). I could narrow it down now to only one problematic slave PC with a loaded server project. At least Cubase did load fine now, with this one project not loaded.

I can live with this for the time being, but I would like to investigate what seems to be the problem. is there any way I could narrow it down more to find it? Or any other way then a crash report to help you find the reason?

13.Vienna Ensemble 6 - So many years in the making and still the incarnation of unreliability 10/6/2018 12:06:22 AM
The frustration must clearly stem from spending that much money on the iMac pro. Clearly, one would except such a computer to work very well ... but it is simply not the case. Use a Mac, if you want to use final cut and logic. For most other software products a Windows 10 computer works way better and costs much less. For any system for professional use, you cannot expect to work everything without proper research, installation and safety measures (backup!). You also should not do updates at any given time, but lock the system with planned update periods in between projects. That is just the nature of professional computer systems.
Apple is trying to persuade people, they can guarantee you an experience where everything just magically works - out of the box and reliably so! You just fell for their marketing. That is never the case, for no amount of money and it is not even the case using Apple software exclusively (or how else would you explain even the most basic iOS features not working reliably?)! If you want things to work by spending money, pay a system administrator to work out a proper system an maintain it. That would be the only way to solve the problem with money! Just by spending more for Apple computers, your experience won't be any better. By blaming software developers for that, you are addressing the wrong people.
14.VEpro crashing Cubase 9.5 10/4/2018 8:10:32 PM

I run the latest version of both Cubase 9.5 and VEpro. Cubase and VEpro both run on a Mac pro 5.1 plus VEpro on two PC-slaves. I recently switched to 9.5 and was using 8.5 until now. Everything runs as fine, as it used to, but since using 9.5, I get a crash of Cubase, when I load the VEpro server projects befor the Cubase project. When I load Cubase first and then manually connect all instanced ... no problem! Everything runs smooth. What could be the reason for that?

15.Threadripper 2 Experience? 9/26/2018 11:43:56 AM

On the forum "The Sound Board" a skilled DAW builder (Jason) made a new rig with the Treadripper 2 2950X (16-core) platform. He compared to the well established i7 8700k, which still is the benchmark for not overly expensive DAW builds with a great single core speed and good real time capabilities. In many cases, this platform outperforms much more expensive systems with more cores due to the great single core speed.

Not all tests showed as much improvement of this new build as there should be in theory. DAWbench DSP 2017 only showed a 25% increase of power over the i7. Yet, with an asio buffer of 512 samples, the DAWbench VI 2017 provided almost double of the voices in Kontakt! The i7 manged up to 2400 voices streamed, while the Treadripper 2 gave way to aa staggering 4480 voices on one machine! That seems very close to (if not even better) than the DAWbench tests on massively overclocked i9 systems - yet without any overclocking ...

All this seems to suggest to me, that a TR2 2950X system would make at least a perfect VEpro slave-PC, almost replacing two i7-slaves, for a decent price (also considering the electricity bill!). The only ubknow to me is, how VEpro would perform on the AMD platform in general and specifically on TR 2. Jason used Reaper for his tests. Does anybody have experience with VEpro performance on AMD?

You can find the mentioned discussion about TR 2 here, but you have to become a member, as the forum does not (yet) show threads publicly: The Sound Board

Goodbye.

Unfortunately, this seems common, especially with composers. It is one reason I don't participate at most composer forums anymore. I, for one, was glad to see your enthusiastic post. I am very optimistic about Synchron Strings, and any future Synchron products. There is no reason for people to hijack a positive thread. They could easily start a new one, and should. Enjoy Synchron, I know I am. It has already made its way into my current film score.

Well, there certainly is a reason for this thread being 'hijacked', which is the extraordinary claims that were made about this library ... I am sure, otherwise Jimmy would have just created a new thread to express his opinion. It is quite funny, because on the other forum Jimmy was punished for defending this library against sceptics, here it is the other way around! This just shows me that some people seem to have a problem with other people having a different opinion and expressing it. Personally, I respect everyone here who thinks this is the best string library there is. I may disagree with it and explain, why, but I won't degrade their opinions by claiming such things, as you did. By those accusations you do nothing but making a fool of yourself.

Clearly, the level of vitriol is not reserved to the VI-Control forum, only ... William, we all appreciate that your opinion seems to be quite contrary to ours and of course there is always some level of taste involved with judging the liking or no-liking a sample library. But, please, do respect opinions deferring from yours in the same manner. We are all here because we wish the best for VSLs success, except some of us have some problems with how this product has turned out so far. This is by far not a minority opinion, so you should not consider that all bollocks.

Neither do I as I hope I made perfectly clear. But regarding that very long thread on VI-Control: Minus some of the usual noise from it quite an important read for the VSL team IMO ...

21.Delete this troll-hijacked thread 12/31/2017 11:18:39 AM
I want to chime in here and back up Jimmys post. This is not to support any negativity that spreads through the internet on various channels, but rather from a guy who had (and still has) high hopes for VSL to once again lead the market with the best orchestral libraries out there!
But at this point, the Synchron Strings are far from that, I am afraid! I have several thoughts on that and I do not want to prematurely decide on any of them, because it takes a certain time to play and refelect and I only installed the library yesterday and played for an hour. Here only my most obvious observations.
While there is something to like about the short notes, it seems to me for the sake of playability the sample starts have been cut to early. I surely like to have a short patch as playable as Synchron, but when it comes at the price of getting unrealistic results, I would prefer a less playable one (or rather an option to switch between playable and good sounding, like other libraries offer without the need of loading an entirely new set of samples into ram). I might be wrong about this, but I believe this is also the main reson, why the shorts don't sound convincing to me in the higher dynamics. There is something there which suddenly makes you freeze, when you hit a velocity in the higher range and I am not talking about the fact that those are "harsh"! No, they just sound as not part of the performance. Clearly I know, that those harsh shorts cannot be played in rapid succession by string players, but even if you just hit one chord or note it sounds strange in a way I still cannot put my finger on it, why ... my best guess is, it is the editing. Further, I generally find those shorts a little to generic in their approach. There is only those super shorts and normal short and to be totally honest, I cannot hear much difference between those. They rather appear to me like time streched versions of the same (not saying, they are!) and it feels a little bit like waste of recources. I would much prefer a more string technique-oriented approach to shorts, like having a real spiccato (not going over the top with the dynamics) and a noticibly longer and meatier staccato (going all the way up there) and possibly other options (not necessary for a volume 1!). To sum up the shorts, I like them in the low dynmics quite a lot, but they need to become less exact, more human in some way. Otherwise, I can see not much use for them on their own (without layering with other samples) and this should reall be the case with a recource hungry library like this!
Regarding sutains, I lke the playable fp and sfz longs very much, as those are very useful and its great to have them like this with a sustained note after it! The normal sustains though seem a bit lifeless to me and in combination with all the legato techniques I just don't get a singing tone like in other libraries, although the competition just has 3 velocity layers most of the time. This IMO is a shame. I find one or two extra dynamic layers are justified by these sustains having more depth for very quiet stuff. I can see that Synchron is probably the best library out there for very intimate, ppp - p moments. But to my taste there is nothing to connect in between the layers. Crossfading them by CC does give some kind expressivity, but it always sounds held back to me and is far from a singing tone, which is what people arguably need most of the time when playingstring legato passages. I think you should have observed the competition more in that regard, as their have quite some improvements been made in the last decade. Certainly, I acknowledge, there are also drawbacks resulting from those techniques, mostly noticable in less playability and I appreciate the fact that VSL is trying to offer an entirely playble package here. But to me, a library of that size is just not justifiable if it focuses so much on that playabiity aspect over providing useful, less generic patches that represent the most needed (for Volume 1) string techniques to reproduce realistic sounding results.
The same goes for the legato techniques. I have to test them more throughly for sure and I find them better then a lot of people do for the most part, actually! But they are also a bit generic, seemingly crafted to provide some variations of a very playable patch. While I appreciate that to a certain degree, I keep wondering what to use these for ... so many times a patch sounds not bad, is very responsive under the fingers, but at the same time just doesn't sound like anything I would expect from a string orchestra. So, my whish for the legatos would be to keep some of that playability, but expand and improve a lot in realism, even if that means sacrificing the playabilty at times.
Altogether, I still hope the synchron series can be turned into a major success and the potential is there! But I believe, some of the core VSL philosophy has to be rethought to a certain degree. There is not so much use in the playbility aspect, if the musical expressiv result is often so much shallower then with the competition. I like the fact, that you guys tried to go over the top with e.g. velocity layers, but I am afraid I have to say there currently is not enough there to justify taxing your computer memory to this degree! There is positive, like the quiet stuff you can get out of these strings, but over all I have to say, this library falls short in just to many aspects, given its price (RSP) and first and foremost recource hunger. i hope you are listening and I whish you the best for 2018.
22.Question about the Synchron Percussion Intro Offer ... 5/26/2017 11:47:51 AM

I don't complain. I just don't like the way marketing is working these days. Intro offers are ok and I appreciate the free room pack and the reduced price point. I find it hard to believe that the Taiko is exclusive during the intro offer ... why would you record a whole instrument to make it only available for a months in bundle with something else? Just doesn't seem logical to me and comes off as an attempt to keep adding reasons, why YOU REALLY NEED TO BUY THIS NOW!!!! :-) If you know anything about marketing, that is part of how it works, to make people feel an urgency to purchase using psychology. I know it is part of our current culture, unfortunately! So, all I wanted to say was, I liked it that VSL held back with this, did their introductory offer with every new product but didn't join the club of writing 10 newsletters in a row on one topic and all of that turbo marketing crap. I see in this announcement a step in that direrection. There was an intro deal and then they created a second announcement to increase the talk about it and make it even more interesting and the exclusive Taiko seems strange to me - I don't really think you will never see it in any other form for sale (or as another goodie) ... It is ok and it probably works quite well and I whish all the best to VSL! But I hope they will stay as they mostly were up to know regarding both sampling and sales philosophy ... not joining all those hypes and crazyiness. All that seems lile a lot of noise to me that does not suite a company dealing with music. As I said: This is my opinion on modern marketing! if you like it, that is ok with me! But please don't put words into my mouth. I did never say I don't like a gift and if you just read what I wrote, wou will know that perfectly well.

23.Question about the Synchron Percussion Intro Offer ... 5/25/2017 10:43:03 PM

First, what exactly does the offer to use the MIR Synchron stage room set for free during the introductory offer mean? Does that mean everybody gets it for free who will buy the Percussion bundle or can I just try it out for free during the room packs introductory offer? It is not formulated in a way you can be sure about that IMO ...

Then, I really wonder what the free Taiko is all about. IMO it doesn't really make sense .. why yould you give this out now and later make available never again? If I remember correctly, the same was announced regarding the Jazz drums as a freebie for buying Vienna Suite. And Jazz Drums were sold later as a download intrument anyway, right? So, please VSL! Don't join those bloody marketing guys as so many others do ... I have much more respect for you the way you mostly handled intro deals and marketing up to now. I guess it is tempting, as you may achieve some quick reults with it, but keep in mind, most customers have a memory for such things and on the long runn it will do more bad then good yor your reputation. This is just my 2 cents, of course! YOu don't need to reply on it, I just wanna give feedback on a company I hold dearly ...

24.VEpro bug with Cubase expression maps 4/3/2017 11:45:00 PM

I didn't want to edit my first post, as there were other problems, so I want to stay with what I said. But now it found out, it might even be Kontakt that is reversing this order ... I saw, if I send notes as keyswitches (instead of CC 0), the order is as it is supposed to be, but as soon as I convert this to PC or CC or whatever (not notes), it gets reversed again - this time in Kontakt! So, I might have been wrong about VEpro doing this to the midi, it might just be Kontakt (or both) ... anyway, I would still like to hear, if the order of midi messages gets reinterpreted from VEpro plugin or host.

25.VEpro bug with Cubase expression maps 4/3/2017 10:08:26 PM

As I want to create a bigger Expression map within Cubases, I cannot use notes, as I don't want them to be in the playable range of the keyboard. Well, then I thought, I'd use program change, but doesn't seem to work due to a VST3 limit (Steinberg actually denies that, well ...).

Well, I am flexible, so I thought, why not take an unused CC insead, like CC 0 or 127. I got a lot of strange result with my expression map, which should have actually worked and I thoroughly learned how to build them by the manual. It took me half a day to figure out that it was actually VEpro that is changing the order of the CC and the note that is coming in! That is why every articulation change that is sent just befor the note (like it happens with attributes, or when you click on a note in the key editor) is being put after the note by VEpro. I could verity that by sending the midi to a midi monitor out side of Cubase. There, the order was as it is supposed to be, but looking at it within VEpro (Kontakt midi monitor) the order is reversed! There probably were good intentetions why to prioritize notes over CC data, but it makes the expressionmaps totally unusable to me.

I am all for a quiet and respectful communication here, but as a long time customer, I must say I am really getting annoyed by all these limitations and malefunctions. It is not only VSL, but also Cubase and partly some plugins. I put days of work into figuring out how I can build a usable and intuitive template, but always something seems to be in the way of working as it actually should. Dear people form VSL, with all respect: Could you please comment on that. Why must you influence the order of midi data sent? Why cant that be played back as it was received? Thank you
