1.Harp glissandi 9/18/2020 11:46:12 PM

Thanks for this response. I know of Dorico's capability in this area. I prefer to work in Cubase, and hope that Steinberg augments their MIDI input transformer to include harp pedaling emulation.

2.Harp glissandi 9/17/2020 12:29:17 PM

Shouldn't it be possible for VSL or a third party to create a plug-in that would transpose each of the seven white keys in each octave either up or down a semi-tone? That would allow us to play glissandi just as we want them in real time. Please advise!!!!

3.Harp glissandi 2/13/2020 5:12:21 PM

Thanks, Guy!

4.Harp glissandi 2/13/2020 4:27:50 PM

Interesting, thanks!!!

5.Harp glissandi 2/12/2020 8:29:40 PM

For all the success I've had, and joy I've gotten out of using these libraries, I've finally comes across an issue that I can't solve-even though it seems like it should be simple!!!

Trying to create a white key (C major) glissando using Harp I preset level 2. This gliss should take place across two bars at the tempo of 63 bpm. None of the glisses I play using C#7 as the trigger note cover this amount of time, and overlaying one on top of another, the second as the first fades out, sounds corny and unconvincing. Has anyone had success making this sound realistic?

Thank you!

Gary

Well done, Guy!  Nice mix...

7.Squeaking by on duo 1.66 GHz - Possible? 12/14/2009 5:07:16 PM

No, in my judgement.  My Dual Opteron, 2.4 gHz is a problem... good news is that quad cores are as cheap as 2K now... check out some of the reputable DAW builders.

8.Cubase Crashing 8/1/2009 6:13:19 PM

Sorry to hear of your problem.  Cubase 5, just installed on my Windows XP machine, crashes when I try to overdub while an editor window is open, when on a track pointed at VSL.  Have you had good luck with the new Expression Tool and VSL?

I output my Finale scores as PDF files and e-mail them to Staples when I want a professional looking product. It's cheap and the scores look great and are bound.

13.Tamtam question for VSL 6/12/2007 12:24:40 PM
Like Nick B., I'm often blessed with the opportunity to speak with people who know lots more than I do about many music technology topics... I don't mind appearing ignorant, or even foolish...

what's the big deal?!

14.tremolo notation question 4/15/2007 8:33:37 PM
On a different, but somewhat related topic, I've been going through the great sounding True Strike I and II percussion samples. A question, which also relates to some of the VSL percussion effects: does anyone really know how to notate some of the more arcane stuff, like the "Gran Casa Superball" effects?

16.more ??? on Understanding Reverb. 3/27/2007 9:23:17 PM
And this same "drawback" of actually losing sounds happens all the time in other pieces to a less extreme degree. I think that when one is doing a sample performance, one never wants to lose any of the precious notes one played into the computer, tweaked lovingly, etc., etc.

So true!
17.Can I use the same instrument to double notes? 3/20/2007 1:45:07 PM

Very simple. Nothing they need to do. You can already do this easily -

simply score for solos, and if they come together use unison ensemble 3s. Sometimes it might be a little trickier, with two solo lines coming together. In that case you can easily use slight vibrato, and non vibrato. Which actually sound better together than truly separate recordings of 2 non vibrato notes. It has to do with the fact that phasing occurs EVEN WITH SEPARATELY RECORDED SAMPLES in brass. Also, I like the fact that you can control the splitting in VI, and create separate, slightly mistimed unison lines.

William, you are quite knowledgable! ok, will try this... but what do you mean by saying, "ou can control the splitting in VI?"
18.Studio Monitors 3/17/2007 10:49:26 PM
I just purchased a pair of Adam A-7's... they're superb. A small footprint, I use them in conjunction with my Macke HR824's. Highest recommendation.
19.Can I use the same instrument to double notes? 3/17/2007 10:46:57 PM
So what's VSL going to with the new concept of making sure that you don't end up with a choir of 2,300 trombones, etc. (ok, an exaggeration) when you play multiple chords with a patch of three?!

Gary,

I've acquired "Real Guitar 2L", it's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! Seems every time you give me advice it turns into something good! Big Smile

Angelo (See, got it right)

The demos are great but can you tell me the name of this sample lib?

Have any of you checked out Peter Alexander's "How Ravel Orchestrate: Mother Goose Suite?" It's fabulous! Inspired by Peter's explication of Ravel's techniques I've begun making VSL presets with unusual color combinations- harp+ is the first one (harp bisbigliando and string tremelos, harp harmonics and viola con sordino, etc.). Now I'm thinking about making more standard combos- flute and violin doublings, for example... I can't remember if you can set the pannings of the instruments independently, but that will be easy to figure out. Guy (and all of you other "guys" who are so brilliant at this stuff)- do you make up presets along these lines?

21.Get a real Orchestral Feel! How? 3/9/2007 4:54:03 PM
Just checked out Peter Alexander's "How Ravel Orcestrated: Mother Goose Suite."

Peter did a fabulous job breaking down the orchestration genuis contained in this work. After studying the scores and accompanying CD I set out to create presets in VSL that contain some of the colors that Ravel used, and then used these ideas as springboards to create other combinations (ie: harp bisbiglando with viola tremolo).

This book is an invaluable tool...

Well I will without hesitating use VSL Concert Guitar for individual notes and acoustic solos or even basic chord patterns but beyond that it's difficult to obtain a realistic guitar sound for the more complex grooves, say a Rhumba Flamenco rhythm, that's why I'm interested in RG2, but I get the feeling it's more rock oriented, am I right?

No, not at all. Check these demos out.

Yeah, Real Guitar 2 is great ... However, I think VSL Concert Guitar will be available in VI

And who would doubt that it will be terrific... not us, right! However, I doubt VSL will be looking to replicate the feature set that RG 2 offers, even if they could. Those guys did some great work. For example, you can change the rate of strum. I think that indicates that MIDI files are working down to that fine a level.

24.Looking for guitar sampler... 3/6/2007 12:39:02 AM
You're welcome... by the way, some of the Latin MIDI files that go with RG2 are first class, and the way you can evolve a Gm7-C7 groove, for example, by changing "fret" positions, is stunning. If you know the guitar you can maximize the authenticity of performance, but even if you don't, the plug-in itself will pull everything into an authentic guitar styling.

Four stars

Need to find a guitar sampler, something like Virtual Guitarist 2, but more for light latin feel, such as a Bossa Nova groove... Any recommendations?

Real Guitar 2 is absolutely brilliant... great integration of midi files and samples, though the sounds themselves aren't great. Acoustic Legends, on the other hand, has gorgeous samples but no midi- as of yet.
