1.When will MIRacle (& related) plugins be available under iLOCK? 4/19/2022 7:28:17 PM

MIR Pro comes with the special integrated MIRacle plugin; it appears in the list of Integrated plugins of VEP7. My version of this was running fine under e-licenser. I migrated everything to iLOCK and it continued to work this week - until I powered off/on the computer. Now, VEP7 pro+MIR complains that it can no longer find the MIR license on the... e-Licenser dongle (!?!): the MIRacle plugin shows still active on the bus but it no longer works. Indeed, all licenses have been migrated to iLOCK, so the dongle is empty (it's about time it noticed!). What shall I do?

2.VEP7 + MIR pro 7.1.1298 Mir icons missing names 4/17/2022 9:13:49 PM

Installed update from 7.1.293 to 7.1.1298 via Vienna Assistant on Windows 10

Similar problems, here too. First time project loading after install:

-It skipped certain displays while loading instance samples (e.g. no MIR window showed up, etc.)

_Finally crashed near the end of project loading

-Restarted and loaded the project OK but instruments are barely audible yet at full volume

-A bit later, crashed while running the project

Rolled back to 7.1.293 - everything is good now.

Where can I find the VEP7 (crash) log?

3.Sibelius and the new Slurred Legatos for Synchron Elite Strings 10/13/2021 12:28:27 PM

Wow! I learned something. That was a bit counter-intuitive but ... the 'Synchron xxx PRO' entries are indeed available when we filter by "All Instruments"   And, best of all, the sounds now work perfectly - including the doublebass. I attached an excerpt of my score: now, at last, I can fine-tune the composition.

Tks

4.Sibelius and the new Slurred Legatos for Synchron Elite Strings 10/12/2021 8:27:32 PM

Tks Andi.

The problem is that there are no " Instruments with "[VSL Synchron Strings Pro]" at the end" in the house style provided by SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.194.exe (see attached 'No Synchron strings pro.PNG')

As for the Program names, I think they are the right ones: as I wrote in the previous post, "The program names in Sibelius Playback devices are Synchron Violins|Violas|Celli|Doublebasses Pro" (see attached 'Programs are Synchron String Pro.PNG')

I re-downloaded and re-installed the Sibelius sound set. When installed, the Vienna Symphonic Library file shows a date created attribute of 7/19/2018 and a date modified attribute of 7/1/2021  (see attached 'Latest house style.PNG'). The file is installed in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius\House Styles\Vienna Symphonic Library.lib

To test things out, I deleted that library file and re-installed yet another time the SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.194.exe. It re-created the 7/1/2021 library file. I then restarted Sibelius, opened the score, re-imported the house style (see attached "Re-imported house style.PNG"), checked the instruments available under "strings" and ... there are still no instruments starting with Synchron... and ending with PRO in the list.

What should I do, now?

Tks

Gil

5.Sibelius and the new Slurred Legatos for Synchron Elite Strings 10/11/2021 7:44:37 PM

Tks for taking time out to reply, Andi. It's really appreciated. Sometimes it feels like troubleshooting the old christmas tree light: it takes only 1 dead lamp to create the problem but finding it is something else.

Yes, I'm using the latest  SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.194 and the "Vienna Symphonic Library" House Style (Appearance -> Import -> Vienna Symphonic Library" and all "Import Options").

I'm loading 03 Synchron Elite Strings, preset "01 VelXF sus MOD".

The Sound set used in Manual Sound sets is "VE Strings", and the instruments, in the strings category, are "Violin n|Viola|Violoncello|Double Bass [VSL Synchron Strings]

The program names in Sibelius Playback devices are Synchron Violins|Violas|Celli|Doublebasses Pro"

The score doesn't mix up different ensemble string types.

I did notice two things. (1) the first has to do with Velocity X-fade. What is the default CCn assignment for Sibelius in the Perform Tab of the Synchron Player -- and where is that documented? E.g., for all Elite string instruments I have Expression=CC11 and Vel.XF=CC1. That's probably because in the past I was using VI Instrument pro rather than Synchron player. I also tried changing Expression to CC2. For all string instruments the CC1 slider moves about with the written dynamics or expressions, hairpins and all - except for... the double bass (it doesn't move).

(2) I also noticed that, by default, some cells were disabled when loading instruments. So string pizzicati were played as Short Notes -> Staccato since the "G# Pizzicato" was disabled. I enabled all cells in the Synchron Player settings and now the celli (and other strings) play the pizz articulation instead of staccato -- except for (you guessed it) the double bass! It simply doesn't move.

6.Sibelius and the new Slurred Legatos for Synchron Elite Strings 9/12/2021 8:21:04 PM

Love these Synchron Elite String sounds.

However, for some reason, only the Double Bass of Elite strings fails to play the proper articulations under Sibelius 2021, the Vienna Symphonic Library house Style in SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.194 and the new Slurred Legatos for the Synchron Elite Strings update. All other Elite string instruments work fine.

In the example attached, slurred half notes for the DB bass, with "ord.~legato" technique text, are played as Short notes, Staccato, Agile by the DBass !! -- whereas they play perfectly fine (as Legato, auto-speed, normal, regular vib) when I load Synchron Strings 1 instruments instead.

Any hints? Is SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.194 current?

7.IT'S A CHOIR! Big Bang Orchestra: Ganymede 5/16/2020 8:41:37 PM

Thank You, Andi

I'll be eagerly waiting.

Take care & stay safe - the creativity and productivity at VSL must go on

8.IT'S A CHOIR! Big Bang Orchestra: Ganymede 5/15/2020 1:17:16 PM

Hello Paul,

And do you know what Sibelius instrument is to be specified in the Manual Sound sets for Big Bang's Ganymede?

For example, Big Bang Orchestra and BBO-Andromeda require Sibelius instrument Others/“Orchestra”. What about Ganymede?

Cheers

9.Sibelius and SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition - Solo Strings 2/3/2020 3:58:34 PM

Makes sense, Andi. There must be something else in the chain and I'll find it.

Tks for everything so far.

10.Sibelius and SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition - Solo Strings 2/2/2020 4:56:04 PM

Thanks, Andi

I'd say that adding this word of caution inside the VE_Optimizing_Sibelius_Playback document could be helpful to others, too.

I have another question, regarding the samples in the VE SY SE instruments package: are they MP3 samples?

I say this because the wave output looks seriously clipped like that of an MP3! Attached are screen shots of the same quartet generated as a 16-bit 44.1 kHz WAVE file but using different samples:

[Top] with the solo string instruments of the former Special Editions PLUS and the VI Pro 2 player, using the VE Special Edition PLUS soundset and MIR PRO disabled.

[Middle] with the solo string instruments of SYNCHRON-ized Special Editions and the Synchron Player, using the VE SY Special Edition soundset and MIR Pro on the SynchronStage

[Bottom] As a test, I also replaced the solo sounds, in the Sibelius mixer, for the sounds of SYNCHRON I violins, violas and celli, just to compare the waveform.

I did not insert any plugins on the channels. And the Dynamic Range CC30 controler is at the default 63 for VI Pro 2 player, 80 for Synchron 1 in the Synchron Player, and 127 for the Synchron-ized SE instruments.

Could there be some kind of imbedded limiter in the Synchron-ized SE instruments?

11.Sibelius and SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition - Solo Strings 2/1/2020 9:19:48 PM

Tks Andi,

You are absolutely right. The soundset [<FileVersion>50001</FileVersion> <Name>VE SY Special Edition</Name>] DOES contain the necessary definitions, right after the Harp patch, but they don't appear in the Sibelius interface:

-<Patch Name="Solo Violin">

<SoundID>strings.violin</SoundID>

<VolumeType>VelXF</VolumeType>

<AttackType>NoteOnVelocity</AttackType>

<SwitchType>Solo Strings</SwitchType>

<PitchBendRange>2</PitchBendRange>

</Patch>

-<Patch Name="Solo Violin II">

<SoundID>strings.violin</SoundID>

<VolumeType>VelXF</VolumeType>

<AttackType>NoteOnVelocity</AttackType>

<SwitchType>Strings no trills</SwitchType>

<PitchBendRange>2</PitchBendRange>

</Patch>

Incidentally, looking at the articulations appearing in the Synchyron Player 1.1.1780: why does Violin I PLUS contain [Keyswitch E: Tremolo+trills] while Violin II PLUS doesn't have trills?  And Violin 1 PLUS has [Keyswitch F#: harmonics] while Violin II PLUS doesn't have them? Etc.

Back to your suggestion, I first applied the soundset 'VE Strings', from which I selected Solo Violin' and then switched the soundset to VE SY Special Edition : well, the Program name stayed there! and the trick worked in general as well as regarding the tremolo issue. [How on earth did you figure out that trick, Andi?!?]

All EXCEPT for violin 2... Sibelius doesn't trigger the second violin in VEP 7: it triggers Violin 1 !!!! So I changed the second violin to a first violin program in Sibelius and now it plays in VEP7... (e.g. Sibelius doesn't like the soundID 'strings.violin.2'?!?). For the time being I can change the VEP7 channel of Violin 2 to a matching Violin 1 PLUS sample and get back the missing trills and harmonics... but I will probably have to deal with possible resonance or other issues that come with this change. I will also have to address the issue with Avid/Sibelius (somehow).

To sum it up: I think that selecting the proper programs in the VE SY Special Edition soundset is a Sibelius issue. But how about the Violin II PLUS issue (no trills, no harmonics, etc.)?

Tks

Gil

12.Sibelius and SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition - Solo Strings 2/1/2020 8:20:18 AM

Note: I forgot to mention that when assigning the sound set “VE SY Special Edition” to my device playback configuration in Sibelius, I could not find the Sibelius violin/viola/cello instrument with “Solo” at the beginning of the name. So I used "Violin" - and that's probably the reason for the problem. Is that instrument missing from the soundset?

13.Sibelius and SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition - Solo Strings 1/31/2020 8:51:13 PM

I have two Synchron-ized SE instruments (solo Vln 2 and solo Vla) playing a half-note notated as [Beams/Tremolos: 8 tremolos] -- but Synchron Player [1.1.1780] plays them back as 'Keyswitch F: Pizzicato'. See figure 1.

For context, I use Sibelius 2020.1, the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style that comes with VSL Sibelius Soundsets 1.0.171, and the following SOLO string instruments of the Synchron-ized Special Edition: Violin 1 PLUS, Violin 2 PLUS, Viola PLUS, Cello Plus.

I have tried the trick that works with SYNCHRON STRINGS I when changing articulations: I inserted the Technique text "ord.~tremolo" but the notes still play back as 'Keyswitch F: Pizzicato'. See figure 2.

I expected the VSL House style and Synchron player would select/play 'Keyswitch E : tremolo'  instead...

For the time being I have reverted to the VI Pro 2 player - and it plays everything just fine.

Any idea?

14.Mixing Synchron Strings with Synchron Player with SE instruments and VIpro 7/14/2019 6:59:03 PM

When I mix Synchron Strings under Synchron Player with Vienna SE winds and brass instruments under VI Pro 2 I find a noticeable delay/latency on attacks between the two types of instruments. Has anybody experienced that, before?

As a comparison, here is a pice called "Variations sur 'Vivace' de Theodore Kirchner" - arrangement and variations I made of a piano piece called "Vivace" by Théodor Kirchner (Op. 57, No. 2). One sample uses the Synchron I strings under Synchron Player; the other sample replaces the Synchron Strings with SE Orchestral strings, under VI pro.

15.The “Harmonics” slot in the first dimension (Articulation) of Synchron Strings I 7/9/2019 10:27:40 PM

The Sibelius Optimization v4.5 document says the VE Strings sound set works with the Synchron Strings I (Synchron Player version). It also states that it is possible to trigger harmonics : ("see VE Special Edition PLUS section. Only available with Vienna Symphonic Library House Style loaded.)". And in the section on VE Special Edition PLUS and VE SY Special Edition, it describes how Harmonics can be reached in three ways.

In particular, it mentions that "to make (harmonics) sound two octaves higher, select the slot “Harmonics” in the first dimension (Articulation). Go to the EDIT tab and set Octave to “1”."

Problem is, I don't find ANY harmonics slot in the first dimension (Articulation). Did I miss something during the installation?

16.Synchron Strings 1st-violins Cantabile and Sibelius 6/15/2019 4:57:27 PM

By Jove! the Custom cells (A6, B6, C6 of the basic matrices)... Forgot about them - but now they sure will come in handy.

17.Synchron Strings 1st-violins Cantabile and Sibelius 6/14/2019 1:44:15 PM

Does anybody know how to trigger the Synchron Strings 1st-violins Cantabile samples in Sibelius? Should I be able to find a corresponding update to the VSL Soundset Installer (currently v.1.0.159)? And info in an updated "Optimizing Sibelius Playback with Vienna Ensemble" document?

Tks

Gil

18.Synchron Strings Violins Cantabile 4/3/2019 11:04:05 PM

I agree.

Btw, does anybody know how to trigger the cantabile patch in Sibelius?

19.Sibelius Sound Set for Epic Orchestra 2.0 3/23/2019 4:18:56 PM

Three little words and a dot (ord.) have made my day!

Thanks Andi - and keep up the good work.

20.Sibelius Sound Set for Epic Orchestra 2.0 3/23/2019 12:06:30 AM

Tks Andi,

Just to say that that the EPIC Orchestra 2.0 samples, played thru Sibelius 2019.1, and using the latest "VE EPIC Orchestra" soundset (SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.156), work well for me (and yield great sounds!)- all except for one: "rise & hit detache" in "12 Synchron FX Strings I Light".

Inserting technique text "detache" doesn't trigger it; however, adding the D1# keyswitch does work. All other articulations of FX Strings ("glissando", "ord.", harmonics") work OK.

21.VE Pro 7 and Epic Orchestra 2.0 2/20/2019 12:38:17 AM

Hello Paul,

Looking forward to this new offering.

Up until now, I used the "VE Epic Orchestra.xml" soundset in Sibelius when working with sounds of the 'EPIC orchestra' in VE Pro 6.

I just bought VEP 7 and downloaded the bundled samples for "EPIC Orchestra 2.0". Given that this new package has all kinds of sound types, what soundset shall I have to use in Sibelius when VEP 7 becomes available?

Tks

Gil

22.VE PRO 6 freezes on Update dialog box 12/2/2018 7:12:38 PM

Hello,

My VE PRO 6 project (6.0.17011) comprises 6 instances. While the channels of the first instance are still loading, VEP displays a dialog box informing me of a pending update. If I reply (e.g. "remind me later"), everything freezes: VEP stops loading and the dialog box never regains control; the process must be killed using the Task Manager. However, if I let it run and load everything, then I can click "Remind me later" or "Install Update", and everything will work fine (e.g. my 'work around').

Possible interference between threads?

24.Flautando in latest Sibelius Symphonic Library housestyle and Soundset 7/18/2018 7:46:48 PM

I just tried the latest (Posted by Andi on Wed, Jun 20 2018 11:43) updated Sibelius VE Strings soundset with Synchron Strings 1. I get back super sounds and articulations (e.g. legato espressivo) - except for "flautando".

The definition exists in the dictionary as <SoundIDChange="+flautando"> and I can trigger it by inserting C#1+G#2 into the staff; however, I get nothing by creating "flautando", whether as a Technique Text (as suggested in the Optimizing Sibelius Playuback V3.7) or as an Expression text or even as a regular Staff text .

What's the secret?

25.Latency between Synchron Player and VI Pro player 6/27/2018 9:30:01 PM

Hello

My VE 6 PRO project combines samples and players from Special edition/VI Pro and Synchron Strings/Synchron Player. Because of this "mixing" or hybrid situation, I chose to use Room-mix (deca tree) presets for the Synchron strings microphones; however there is still noticeable delay/latency on attacks between the Synchon strings and the VI Pro/SE instruments (flutes, trumpets, oboes, etc.) - especially when all playing fast+short notes.

Should I reduce the "delay" currently found in the "Mid" microphone presets - or are there other more pertinent parameters that I'm not aware of, and that could help reduce this delay?

Tks!
