1.How to use Logic Pro/Mainstage Sculpture from a PC...? 8/14/2013 2:32:23 PM

Ok - I figured out one way, but it's a bit Heath Robinson and doesn't use VEP. If anyone has a better suggestion, I'd be really keen to hear.

* ipMIDI from PC to Mac

* New MIDI Multi Input to Sequencer connection in Logic Pro's Environment from ipMIDI

* plasq Wormhole2 AU transmitter in Logic on Mac on instrument insert - name channel in Wormhole chooser - check Sync

* plasq Wormhole2 VST receiver in Nuendo/Cubase on PC on audio track instert - select channel in Wormhole chooser - check Sync

* VNC screen sharing for knob tweaking

* make sure sample rates match

* play!

2.How to use Logic Pro/Mainstage Sculpture from a PC...? 8/14/2013 12:49:00 PM

Hi -

Do any of you gurus out there know how I might do this?

I am in a VST-based DAW on PC and I use VEP all the time to run my other PC-based VST instruments. And sometimes also use AU plugins via VEP on a Mac machine.

I would like to be able to use Sculpture but it only runs in Logic and Mainstage on Mac.

Is there a way to set up a relationship via VEP...? I don't mind using VNC to tweak knobs, but would prefer not to have to use external midi and audio interfacing.

Is there any "inter-host"-type capability in VEP that I could use...?

(My current understanding is that Logic can only be a ReWire host, not a slave.)

Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Graham

3.VE Pro 5 - Auto increment Inputs and Outputs? 5/28/2013 6:14:08 PM

Aha! Awesome! Many thanks Karel!

4.VE Pro 5 - Auto increment Inputs and Outputs? 5/28/2013 10:41:39 AM

Hi -

Forgive me if this is posted somewhere or in the docs - I can't seem to find it....

Is there a way in VE Pro to automatically increment the inputs and outputs of a channel contextually?

So, for example:

I set up a multi-timbral instance of Kontakt in VE Pro; I have 8 instruments, on 8 midi channels each outputting from Kontakt on a discrete audio channel; then I create 7 additional audio input channels in VE Pro; and then set the input of each to Kontakt 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the outputs to Out 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 etc. So all inputs and outputs are ascending incrementally.

Is there a way to select the channels and drop down on the first one and then auto-apply incrementally across the remaining selected channels?

Many thanks,

Graham

5.Using Flux's "IRCAM Spat" with VSl samples. 6/30/2012 11:12:41 AM

Hi Antonnct -

Here's a mockup I did that uses SPAT with many VSL samples (and others). It's not a great piece of music - far from it! - but fun to do - don't take it too seriously.

http://soundcloud.com/grahamhadfield/crazy-ambush

I should say - it's not just VSL samples I've used - I'll use whatever I can get my hands on and I think has the right sound for the situation, and blend them. No purism here. No shame even! :-) From memory, there is some Dimension Brass, woodwinds high and low, orchestral strings (harsh samples), and percussion in there which is definitely VSL. Also using VEPro, VIPro and Vienna Suite, so I think it's ok to share on a VSL forum(?!).

I'm absolutely not going for concert performance authenticity in the mix. This filmic music is an "unreal" mix in an "unreal" space as in my view (and this is subjective) I find music that is clearly in a "real" space often doesn't stick so well to the film and sort of lives in another space to the drama. Just my view. So I prefer to use algorithmic reverbs rather than convolution reverbs for this film stuff. Maybe this is why I have not investigated MIR yet. My impression of MIR is that it is for placing music in "real" spaces first and foremost (though of convolution IR doesn't _have_ to be a real space of course). My impression of SPAT is that it is a glorified panner that does left-right, (up and down ostensibly), distance from the listener, and left-right divergence (spread), without necessarily colouring the sound in a particular space as the reverb is independent of these glorified panning controls. To that point, thinking about it, I have not used any convolution reverb in this mix - only algorithmic - if that's relevant(?). Also - I will work the mix to bring instruments to the foreground and then push them back as needed (primarily just with levels) - which is certainly not concert authentic - unless you get the musicians to move around while playing!

Hope that's of some vague interest. Some might say that SPAT is unnecessary - you could use levels, pan, divergence, eq, reverb send levels, and maybe delays to achieve the same thing. Well, yes maybe - but I don't think I have the time or the skill to use levels, pan, divergence, eq, reverb send levels and maybe delays to achieve the same thing.

By the way - SPAT is only available as a 32 bit plugin right now. They are working on 64 bit. Their marketing blurb is (or was) a bit misleading in that it said it functions in 64 bit - but this is the internal bit depth for its audio processing, not the target platform of the plugin.

Cheers,

Graham

6.VE Pro: Superior Drummer 2 and EZDrummer do not load samples 5/3/2012 9:55:02 PM

Same problem here. Any input also greatly appreciated.

My working workaround is simpler though. I save my Cubase project, disconnect from VEPro 5 via the plugin on the Cubase side, then connect again and it all loads fine on the remote side. No settings lost but a real pain, especially when there are loads of other things to load into memory too.

Cheers.

7.Imperial - sustain notes cut off 1/28/2011 11:29:11 AM

Thanks Andy - I'm at 512 in standalone and still get the occasional clicks. In the DP host I have a 512 sample buffer, too.

I have changed the VEPro AU plugin client to 2 buffers and it now appears to be ok. Previously I've had terrible clicks and dropouts between VE and DP when I've chosen anything other than no buffer. That seems to have been fixed now, and choosing two buffers has fixed this current problem.

I just won't use in standalone - which is fine. That was just to test if the problem was only in the host.

So thanks Andy for suggesting I re-check those settings.

8.Imperial - sustain notes cut off 1/28/2011 8:40:38 AM

Hi -

I too have a similar problem. When I hold the sustain pedal down for a long time and let all notes ring, the output starts clicking without any particular, repeatable pattern.

Problem is the same in all of these scenarios:

1. standalone on iMac 2.8GHz intel core 2 duo, 4GB, samples on external drive 7200RPM FireWire connect, OS10.5.8.

2. AU in DP 7.2.2 on iMac 2.8GHz intel core 2 duo, 4GB, samples on external drive 7200RPM FireWire connect, OS10.5.8.

3. AU VEPro client in DP 7.2.2 on iMac 2.8GHz intel core 2 duo, 4GB, OS10.5.8; Imperial in VEPro 64bit server on Windows 7 Pro, i7 350, 24GB, samples on internal 7200RPM sata 6gb connect; computers attached to same gigabit switch by short cat 6 cables

Problem does not occur when doing a non-realtime bounce.

I have latest versions of imperial, ve pro server and client, elicenser, etc.

I could capture the audio output if this helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
G

10.USB Hub Recommendation? 3/26/2010 2:09:23 PM

Hi kamczak -

Yes - that's exactly the hub I've tried. Maybe it's the combination of that and the Mac OS - or maybe a bad unit.

Thanks anyway,

G

13.USB Hub Recommendation? 3/26/2010 11:02:50 AM

Hi -

Can anyone recommend a USB hub that they use and works well with the Vienna Key, please?

I have a D-Link hub (powered by an adapter, not just the bus) which works fine with iLok dongles but not the Vienna eLicenser.

Many thanks,

G

14.Controlling VE3 on the slave - which remote-client product do you use? 9/9/2009 7:24:08 AM

Hey Kerry

If you're not using Bluetooth for your keyboard/mouse, personally I prefer the simple hardware approach of using a KVM Switch. (Google it.)

Plug keyboard, mouse and a monitor into the switch on one "side" and the keyboard, mouse, and monitor cables into both computers on the other side.

No remoting. Press a button on the KVM Switch to alternate between physical control and display of each computer.

17.accordion 7/19/2009 9:38:09 PM

Hi Denis -

Check out the accordion that is part of the UVI IRCAM Solo Instruments library.

http://www.uvisoundsource.com/ircam-solo-instruments/product_info.php/products_id/40

There is some really nice stuff in this library, played by some of the best performers in Paris. Great for extended techniques.

If you're after some of the other instruments as well as the accordion, the library starts to become really good value.

Cheers,

G

18.Crackling and dropouts with Vienna Ensemble and logic. Are 4 VE instances too much? 4/22/2009 2:04:16 PM

19.Crackling and dropouts with Vienna Ensemble and logic. Are 4 VE instances too much? 4/22/2009 12:33:58 AM

Same issue on an 8 core Mac Pro, OS 10.5.6, 10GB RAM running VE3 with Digital Peformer 6.0.2.

Always goes snap crackle and pop with the 4th instance (even when the 4th instance is reduced to just one instrument).

Looking at the Activity Monitor there is loads of RAM free and the crackles and dropouts do not align with any spikes on the Disk IO graph. Peculiarly when the single (simple) instrument in the 4th instance began to play with the other instruments the CPU activity went up to about 85% on all CPU meters in parallel and stayed there. Muting that instance gets the CPU down to around 25-30% on all meters and each meter varies somewhat independently rather than in parallel. Could this be an issue with the way in which instructions are assigned to the multi-core processors? Maybe something that's fixed in Snow Leopard / Grand Central?, and/or in VE Pro?

I'm having to work around by freezing tracks to ensure no more than 3 instances, which is far from ideal.

One thing I don't understand is why the disk speed matters for VE3 at playback time (not load time). Aren't the samples loaded into RAM and accessed from there?

My previous project was much bigger, and required more samples, so I had to work with the DAW on Mac, and the VE3 host on 64 bit Windows XP. This 64 bit Windows instance was running inside VMWare Fusion which was running on the Mac Pro described above. Even with this setup, it was possible to have 4 instances running with a dense piece and no crackles or dropouts. I didn't think it was necessary for this project as the RAM requirements are much lower.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks!

G

20.VE 2.0.3452 Problems with DP6.02 3/27/2009 4:50:27 PM

Cool! I'm glad it worked.

21.VE 2.0.3452 Problems with DP6.02 3/27/2009 10:48:10 AM

Hi Claude -

I believe the pre-gen capability is to reduce CPU usage during playback and/or latency if you need to playback and record at the same time. For me, the main benefit to setting virtual instruments to real time is it doesn't do that pesky save every time you breathe! :-)

Cheers,

Graham

22.VE 2.0.3452 Problems with DP6.02 3/27/2009 12:42:45 AM

Hi Claude -

Try this and see if it helps...

Go to Digital Performer menu -> Preferences... -> Audio Plug-Ins, and change the Plug-in real-time preference to Virtual Instruments in real-time for the current project.

For me, this stops the annoying saving addiction that DP has!

Hope it works!

Cheers,

Graham

23.Velocity Cell Switching 3/13/2009 9:54:54 AM

So the bigger question is why-oh-why is it 0-100 in VI when MIDI is 0-127? If you have more than 3 or 4 things you want to switch between this creates a nightmare of error-prone guess work to get your automation curves correct in the DAW. Unless someone knows how to configure DP or Logic to display a range of 0 -100 for CC data???

24.Vienna Ensemble Instruments and Master Bus disappear 2/23/2009 10:38:16 AM

Hi -

I have exactly the same problem working with DP 6.0.1. I'm using the latest BETA downloads of VE2 and VE3 and have 10GB RAM on same Mac OS 10.5.6.

Cheers,

Graham
