1.Dorico Expression Maps and Playback Templates for SYNCHRON-ized Special Editions 11/9/2020 11:42:02 AM

Andi,

I noticed that there was no playing technique for trills, half or whole. Is this an oversight or intentional since Dorico has it's own method of generating trills when you use the "tr" symbol? I had to go into Engrave>Playing Techniques... and define my own text based symbol - Trill(half-step), if I specifically wanted to trigger VSL's trill articulation.

Initially I couldn't get this to work, not because I had the wrong definition, but rather because I had it following the "Portato" articulation in my test score. My trill only worked if I ended the "Portato" articulation with "Ord" prior to using the trill.

Are there any other of these idiosyncrasies that we should be aware of when using the maps? I'm sure that as people use them more, their experiences will be documented.

2.[SOLVED] Synchron Player Not Loading in latest VE Pro 7 7/4/2019 11:10:00 AM

Hi,

Today I updated VE Pro 7 and the Synchron Player. I also updated my Cubase to 10.0.30 (the latest).

I can't get the Synchron Player to load in any of my instances. It's in the channel slot but in brackets. How can I activate it?

I'm on a mac (10.14.5)

Edit ***

There was an issue with the midi CC that I was using to enable/disable tracks. Working now.

3.Synchron SE template audio buss strategy in VE Pro 6/17/2019 3:56:39 AM

Hey ZWaves,

Thanks for your detailed response. I've come to almost the exact solution as you over the weekend after setting up my Strings instance. Once thing I've done is to use one of my keyboard buttons to send a CC from a Cubase midi track to enable/disable the corresponding VEP channel.

In VEP you open up the automation window and select the midi controller tab. Add a mapping with the + button then learn (L) in the left hand column. Go to your Cubase track and press the controller button which will then automatically create the correct routing in VEP. You then go to the right hand column and press L, then press the enable/disable icon in the VEP channel. All done. I did this for all my strings solo, chamber, orchestral and appassionata channels. It didn't take that long once you get in the click and repeat mode.

Note that the CC button does not act like a true toggle because VEP only gives you the ability to map CCs. You have to press it so that sending 00 will enable and 127 will disable (or maybe it was the other way round). One thing that would be great is to have some sort of indication within Cubase as to which VEP channel is currently enabled. I don't think this is possible so you have to monitor what is going on through the VEP interface. I'll keep this thread updated as I discover more issues or solutions. Once again, thanks for the time to respond.

4.Synchron SE template audio buss strategy in VE Pro 6/14/2019 1:37:20 AM

Hi,

I want to build a Synchron SE bundle only template in VE Pro 7 and start composing without distractions. I will be routing the audio back into Cubase. What is a solid strategy for handling the audio. Here are some options:

1. An audio output for every individual instrument in the bundle. This is the most demanding on resources but would then allow me to create busses in Cubase as I please.

2. An audio output for orchestral instrument sections e.g. a) Vn1 buss being fed by the respective Vn1 patch from solo, chamber, orchestral or appassionata srings or b) Flute buss being fed by Flute 1 Plus, Flute II Plus, Alto Flute Plus, Flute-ens 3 Plus etc. This is probably a good compromise on flexibility and resources.

3. An audio output for each orchestral group e.g. strings, brass, woodwinds, Keys/Mallets, Voices, Perc etc. This is probably the best for a single computer system where it is assumed that the balance between insruments is handled in the VE Pro mixer.

4. An audio output for frequency / articulaion combinations e.g. strings high longs, strings high shorts, strings low longs, strings low shorts, brass shorts, brass longs etc. I've read about this strategy for creating stems for further mixing. Is it good for a composing mindset? It probably originated from ensemble libraries that provide their samples in these categories.

5. Dedicate an instance to each orchestral group: strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion etc. and have all instruments in each instance route to a master fader (01/02). This is the easiest option which I'll probably start with.

Also, I'm thinking of loading only PLUS patches with certain slots disabled. Can individual slots then be enabled through automation from Cubase?

Any suggestions or comments? Ideally I would just like to download a VE Pro 7 Synchron SE bundle starter project with everything loaded but disabled. Is this on the horizon?

5.MIRx with MIR Pro 11/5/2013 1:57:27 AM

Hi,

I have both MIR Pro and MIRx. For the sheer convenience, I'm using MIRx rather than MIR Pro to quickly setup a large template based on SE Vols 1-4.

As I have nothing on the MIR Pro stage except the default microphone, is there any interaction between the MIR Pro environment and the MIRx environment? In other words, do the settings on the output tab of MIR Pro contribute anything to the sound I'm getting from MIRx?

Once the new version of MIR Pro is released that incorporates the MIRx presets, I will re-evaluate what I'm doing but in the meantime I like the convenience of MIRx.

6.MIRx Natural Volume 10/17/2013 10:37:27 PM

Hi,

I need some clarification about how to use natural volume. I'm using Cubase so do I set my mixer levels all at the same level e.g. 0dB while natural volume is on? The balance between all the instruments is handled within VI Pro and I would only tweak the Cubase mixer to raise or lower some instruments.

Alternatively, I could switch natural volume off and then set my mixer levels in accordance with the natural volume table at the end of the user manual. I would set the loudest instrument in my score at 0dB and all other instruments would be manually set by adding or subtracting the offset. This would assume that my VI Pro master volume is set to the same level on all channels e.g. 100 for CC7.

The example in the user manual under the natural volume section implies that you have to adjust you mixer levels with the correct offset while natural volume is on. This I don't understand based on the two scenarios I gave above.

7.Kontakt routing issue with VE Pro 4/20/2013 9:39:29 AM

Hi,

My VE Pro mixer channels are out of sequence for some reason.

I have a Kontakt multi with  7 instruments. I add this multi (7 channels) to the VE Pro mixer and I also have 7 stereo outputs in Kontakt. In Cubase I also assign 7 tracks to these instruments.

If I select any of the first 5 tracks in Cubase there is a one-to-one correspondence with the VE Pro channels. If I play track 6, I get output on both channel 6 & 7 of VE Pro. If I play on track 7 of Cubase I must add channel 8 to VE Pro in order to get any output.

What's going on here?

I've tried everything e.g. deleted the multi and started again, deleted the stereo channels in the Kontakt multi and then reassigned them etc. Nothing seems to get rid of this problem.

I've got the latest versions of all software:

VE Pro 5.1.12167

Cubase (PC 64) 7.0.3 build 2134

Kontak player 5

I have verified that all my tracks, channels and stereo outputs are unique and sequential so I can't see any operator error.

Alex

8.Bulk CC Mapping Change in VI Pro instances 8/2/2012 12:59:11 PM

This could work in my situation but what about the case where template A has many different CC mappings compared with template B. It is currently not possible to save these settings as a preset and then apply them globally to template B. Or am I missing something in my understanding?

9.Bulk CC Mapping Change in VI Pro instances 8/2/2012 11:50:11 AM

Hi,

I have a 50 instrument viframe64 template that I use with
Sibelius. It has velocity XF set to CC11 in all instruments. I want to
use the same template with Cubase but with velocity XF set to CC2 in all
instruments. Is there a quick way of achieving this or do I have to open every VI Pro instance and manually make the change?

10.2nd Violin not changing articulations in Sibelius6 and Vienna Ensemble 7/6/2012 11:14:05 PM

Hi Andi,

Changing the mixer to (Auto) solved the problem. What a simple solution. Thanks for your help. What does (Auto) do?

11.2nd Violin not changing articulations in Sibelius6 and Vienna Ensemble 7/6/2012 9:21:24 AM

Hi Andreas,

I've done everything you mentioned but still Violin 2 is not switching. Here is what I have:

Violins I (channel 1) Program name: Violins Appassionata (SE3) SoundID: strings.violin.ensemble
Violins II (channel 2) Program name: Violins Appassionata (SE3) SoundID: strings.violin.ensemble
Violas (channel 3) Program name: Violas Appassionata (SE3) SoundID: strings.viola.ensemble
Cellos (channel 4) Program name: Celli Appassionata (SE3) SoundID: strings.violincello.ensemble
D. Basses(channel 5) Program name: Doublebasses Appassionata (SE3) SoundID: strings.contrabass.ensemble

I'm using a manual sound set: VE Special Edition PLUS

I've got one active device: Vienna Ensemble Pro

Each instrument in my mixer is pointing to the above active device and each instrument has a unique channel 1-5 with the above mentioned SoundIDs.

I'm running VI Pro with matrices from category 06 App Strings V3 (e.g. 51S App violins). My channels are unique as above (1-5).

I'm using House Style: Vienna Symphonic Library.lib 21/03/2012 102KB. This was extracted from VSL_House_Style_Sib6-7_v1.8

My test file is the same two bars repeated in all 5 strings. Bar 1 is Pizz and bar 2 is Arco. All strings except Violins II switch correctly.

My system is Win 7 Pro 64 bit running VE Pro 5 64-bit with VI Pro, MIR Pro and 24GB memory. All my software is up-to-date.

Let me know if I can provide anymore information.

Gyprock

12.2nd Violin not changing articulations in Sibelius6 and Vienna Ensemble 7/5/2012 1:50:01 PM

Hi

I have a string quartet setup in Sibelius with sounds coming through Vienna Ensemble from the Solo Strings library. For some reason the second violin doesn't change articulations. I set it up in the same way the other instruments were setup using the Solo Strings Sound Set and other than being assigned to it's own midi channel it appears to be configured in the same way Violin 1 is. The bizarre things is how only that instrument is not picking up the articulation changes while the other three instruments are.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks,
Duane

I've got the same problem with Violins 2 not correctly changing articulations. In my case I'm using App Violins from SE Vol 3. All my other strings (Violins 1, Violas, Cellos, Basses) change correctly (e.g. Pizz to Arco) whereas Violins 2 will stay on Pizz and not change back to Arco. Violins 2 will respond to symbols such as staccato, slur, tenuto but they won't respond to "normal" or "natural" markings via Ctrl+T.

I have all the latest software and soundsets and have loaded the house styles. I have distinct midi channels in my Sibelius playback configuration and in VE Pro 5. My mixer is setup correctly ie the correct sound IDs are there. Obviously this is a bug.

Any ideas on how to resolve the issue? I've tried switching back to Siblius Essential and then back to VE Pro but this doesn't fix the problem.
13.VI Pro Slots with MIR 6/6/2012 7:59:48 AM
Hi,

Just to clarify my understanding, the VI Pro inspiration presets (or matrices with doubles such as Cello with D.Bass 8vb) don't make sense when used with MIR because there are different instruments in the slots and these cannot be individually positioned on the stage. However stacking different articulations of the same instrument does make sense e.g. combining staccato and legato to get more attack.

Is my thinking correct?

14.Multiple VE Pro instances with MIR Pro 5/22/2012 8:20:45 AM
Hi Dietz,

By "no built in obstacles" I assume that you mean that one of the options could be to open the same venue in 4 instances of VE PRO and just make sure all the MIR settings are the same except for the instruments loaded i.e. I could have strings in one instance, woodwinds in another etc. What would be the main impact on the sound? Or alternatively, how will the realism be affected?

Alex
15.Multiple VE Pro instances with MIR Pro 5/22/2012 5:13:52 AM
Hi,

I'm using Notion notation software and it can only assign 16 staves (i.e. midi channels) to each VE Pro instance. This means that I can't take advantage of a full orchestra in a MIR Pro venue in a single instance of VE Pro.

Are there any specific strategies for using multiple VE Pro instances with MIR?.

16.Herb's Teldex MIR Pro presets 5/4/2012 11:03:03 PM
Hi,

Any update on this? I just purchased Mir Pro 24 and I am setting up my template with VSL SE. Herb's Teldex presets are just what I need (with Room Pack 2) but I am not clear how I can pick and choose from the full range of presets available (as long as I don't go over the 24 instrument limit). Any advise on the best way to work with the presets today or do I have to wait for an update to Mir Pro 24? I'm holding off on the purchase of Room Pack 2 until I'm a little more clear on what to do.

17.East West Play 32-bit crashing in build 10068 1/24/2012 10:39:54 PM

Have you reported this to East West?

Yes I have now reported it to East West. Note that after doing a rescan, VEPro has marked the 32-bit Play VST as being bad so it no longer shows in the list of available VSTs within VEPro.

Note that everything was working fine prior to installing this latest build.

18.East West Play 32-bit crashing in build 10068 1/24/2012 11:47:59 AM
Is anyone having problems with East West Play 32-bit in the new build? Opening a new 32-bit server instance and then loading Play immediately crashes it. The 64-bit server instance is not causing this problem.

UPDATE: I installed Play 3.0.30 (latest version) and now VEPro doesn't get past the opening testing phase so its even worse than before.

The reason I'm using the 32-bit version of VEPro Server is because I'm testing a 32-bit reverb. Otherwise I'd go with the 64-bit version.

I'm on a PC (win7 64-bit) with 12GB RAM. Nothing else is loaded except VEPro.
