Dear VSL,

I downloaded and installed the iLok version of Vienna Suite (not the PRO version, but the older one) with the Vienna Assistant. Before installing I downloaded an activated one of my three licenses on my elicenser (a third generation dongle). It shows up as it should on my iLok as an activated license. However when opening either my Cubase 12 or  an instance of my Vienna Ensemble Pro an activation request from iLok pops up. This is not an activation for my Vienna Suite but one for the Vienna Imperial piano - which I don't own. It seems that the Vienna Suite 2.0.56 refers to the wrong license...

Could you please look into this?

Thanks for your fast reply! I don't mind waiting a little longer. I am still using the the non iLok version, but I'd like to drop my eLicenser - Vienna Suite is the only license left on it.

In the product overview it says that Vienna Suite 'will be back once it is compatible with the iLok License Management system'.

 

For some time now it is possible to download my Vienna Suite licences on my iLok _ which I did thinking that the license being available for iLok mow, would imply that I could download Vienna Suite for iLok with the Vienna assistant app. However the old Vienna Suite is still not available. Could you explain why and could you indicate when I will be able to download Vienna Suite as is promised in the product overview?

Hi Matteo,

The silent key function is currently not implemented. You can find out your self: try to press a key on your keyboard without triggering a sound in any of the VSL piano's. Paul wrote that it is on VSL's to do list. Nine months ago he answered me the same, adding that the issue had a low priority because only 5 people had asked about it. Now there are 7 people asking. I doubt that this is an interesting number for VSL. All we can hope for is that more customers ask for the silent key function.

Hi everyone (and of course especially Paul!)

 

I was one of the five people first asking if it was possible to implement a silent key function. It might not be a main stream functionality - you can play all the classics and it is never used in any film score as far as I know - but if you're a bit more adventurous, it is a must. Bartók used it, and avant garde classics like Berio, Boulez, Ligeti and Stockhausen did so too (quite often). Moreover, the implicated sostenuto function makes no sense without the silent key function. All the top competitors (Garritan, True Keys, Synthology) have this function. There must be a way to implement it and make the VSL pianos absolutely perfect - they are already so much better then anything else out there!

 

I guess it is a matter of more people asking for it. Hope this helps…

In spite of the low amount of users missing the silent key function, I do hope that VSL will go for perfection as that has always been the ethos of your company - and of all those great Vienese composers through the ages that helped develope the piano into what it has become...

Thanks for your suggestion. Sadly this does not work. Filtering out midi values in Cubase’s logical editor result in them not sounding, which means that it is as if you did not press the keys beneath the threshold value at all. You don't hear anything while the silent key function makes it possible that you hear the key pressed down and the hammers lifted.  When you press down and hold a major chord without making it sound with the silent key function on an instrument that has it (the Garritan CFX for example) and you play the same chord not silently an octave higher, you can hear the chord of the keys you hold down resonate - just like you would on a real piano. Modern composers from Bartók to Boulez. Ligeti, Berio or Stockhausen used this feature often, but you can also us it to accentuate the out the voicing in for instance Bach’s counterpoint.

That is really sad, but may be there is hope? You write 'currently' which make it possible that the silent key function will be implemented in a foreseeable future. Other piano’s (the Garritan CFX for instance) have the silent key function, so it should be possible to let the VSL piano's also have it... Could you try and get it on some sort of agenda?

Somewhere back in May the issue of the missing silent key function in the Synchron Steinway was brought up in this forum. There were no developments since then. The Steinway is superb, but there is still one crucial element missing to make it completely realistic and that is the silent key function... 

Will this function be implemented and if so, is there an estimate as to when this will happen?
