1.FREE Celestial Strings - Miracle String Pad 4/27/2022 4:52:48 PM

Hi,

Seems very nice indeed for free instrument. I installed it but I can't see it in the SY sample player...

I do have the Fujara working well.  Other people experience the same?

I did re install SY sample player and reboot my machine to no avail.

Thanks!

JR

2.Gino Vanelli cover all with VSL instruments in MIR 11/26/2017 1:59:16 PM

Hi,

Nice song by Gino Vanelli from the "Canto" album.

I wnated to do it for a long time and now I did it.

I would appreciate comments to improve my mix.

I used dimension strings, dimension brass, oboe d'amore, and several other  VSL instruments.

All in MIR!

Thanks

Jean Roy

3.Dimension violins 2 - Con sordino violins - Cantata BWV 30 - Alto aria 9/26/2016 3:43:22 PM

Hi Phillipe,

Pretty nice work, I  love so much Bach cantatas.

Surprising but very good rendition!!

4.i love u - Demetrio Trombi (based on the baseline of Kurt Elling's The Waking) 8/28/2016 12:38:03 AM

Hi Demetrio,

I like your piece very much and I'm sure that if I listen to it a couple of times more, I will also like it more.

I particurlarly like where the 1st violin is doing pizz.

On thing though, I don't like the placement of the bass, I think you should would try it in the center and in front of the quartet. (Just a suggestion!

Thanks for posting!

Jean Roy

ps

Do you have a link to the original version of 'The Waking'?

5.Raga, by Jerry Gerber 12/5/2015 5:04:30 PM

Hi Jerry,

I really like this piece, very good balance of "acoustic' and synth sound.

Very lively composition.

I really like Indian classical music.

I am certainly far from your ability as a composer but I would like a small suggestion (since it is on the forum.)

Since the title is very evocative 'Raga'...  I am miss the tabla.  I think your main theme would benefit from a tabla rythm or even a synth sound that would carry this role.

Anyway, only my 2 cents worth.

Your output as a composer is very impressive!

Very good work!

6.Unease (Original Composition) 7/8/2015 12:32:32 PM

Hi again Yacob,

Indeed, a description goes a long way.

From that perpective, the music seems pretty good.

I will check on your soundcloud soon!

I still maintain my comment regarding the reverb.

Keep up the good work!

Jean Roy

7.Unease (Original Composition) 7/7/2015 3:41:38 PM

Hi Yacob,

I would not consider it in term of 'bad' or 'good'. I would consider it in terms of the purpose of the music. As a listener, I'm not getting the message that you want to get through.

I've listened carefully to your music.

I think you have some good musical ideas but the score lacks direction I think. A bit like a painter who have a clear idea of a picture in mind but do not yet have the skills to put it on the canvas.

What I suggest is that you study movie or classical score, or formal traning if you can.

Alexander publishing have several good packages to learn from.

To learn the craft takes time and there is no shotcuts, believe me I know. I am an amateur too.

Here is an interesting link of a Montreal composer.

http://alanbelkinmusic.com/letter.html

As for the overall sound, I think it is a bit lost in reveberation but it might have been willingly if it was an ambiance that you wanted to have in the first place.  It is well balanced overall.

From a guy that is in about the same situation!

8.J.S.BACH using MIR Pro 5/5/2015 1:56:45 PM

Hi Phillipe,

Really outstanding!!

I always wonder whether you play the harpsicord 'live'?

I know you're a very good harpsicordist but it is so clean.

And You really got the recipe for the  strings to sound baroque.

I would kill for your setup.

I think its does sound even better than your previous attempt and yes, I wouldn't have think about trying the Foyer as a potential room for this piece.

I'm always a fan of your work, very good, knowledgeable, balance and tasteful interpretation!

9.First real-world MIR mix 4/21/2015 8:29:24 PM

Hi Talino,

You did a great job, and the music is really good.

It is just a question a taste when you have achieve such a result.

I've listened to it at work with headphone so the reverb is perfect for that!

You really can't do much better than thaT.

Congrats!

10.The Endless Blue - Dimension Strings 4/16/2015 2:59:03 PM

Hello Michael,

I don't know what type of comments you look for but I'll give it a try.

Overall, I like the music very much.

The mix is very clear, all the parts are easy to discern and you bring to the front the right musical motif of the moment.

If you try to emulate a real orchestra, I would suggest the following:

Some glissandi seems to me out of place to me. (Unatural)

This piece would benefit of a little more dynamics in the accompaniment parts (mostly), that would help to underline your main theme a little more and would emulate a real orchestra better in my view.

Hope this help!

Keep up the good work

Jean

11.A few demos for Clarinet 2 4/8/2015 3:31:44 PM

Hi Gukas,

The samples were played by a musician that was trained....

Guy Bacos demos fooled a good friend of mine who is a professionnal clarinet player.

He was really skeptical as someone did that with samples.

It is that good for the sound, but the composition are outstanding as well.

Have a good day!

12.EQ'ing VSL instruments 2/20/2015 2:31:05 PM

Hello,

I also like to use these filter.

I recently bought the 'universal sordino' from numerical sound and tried it with Dimension strings.

It looks really promising but there is so many different filters to choose from that it takes a lot of testing.

I'm already having pretty good result with it.

It saves memory too!

13.dimension strings composition 1/16/2015 12:39:33 AM

Hi Stephane,

I really enjoy your style.

I also use the same room with dimension strings but you definitely sound better. ;))

I will listen to it several more times to get the flow of harmonies.

Sounds really good!

I really liked his approach to teaching.

15.No vibrato for Clarinet 2/10/2014 2:43:25 PM

 Thanks Herb,

This trick is good!

I have made an arrangement for a song about a month ago, and the intro of the piece was piano and clarinet.

To me, it sounded really nice.

Then the guy I made the arrangement for came up to me and said: " the music is really nice but we'll have to hire a clarinetist to play it.

We had a discussion and I finally understood that he could'nt conceive a clarinet without vibrato even if the overall sound was really good.

He had almost never listened to classical clarinet playing.

It is funny how our expectations comes from what we are used to hear.

It is so important to listen to a lot of good music to develop a good ear.

18.Dimension Strings + Chamber strings - Gabriel's Oboe 12/2/2013 9:31:47 PM

 Hi,

Well done for the strings. I'll definitely want to try your idea.

I have the same problem with the oboe as William.

Beside the lack of dymanics of the solo, the basic sound doensn't convince me.

I dont know the company that makes this sample so I cannot comment on it.

But William is right about the Oboe d'amore. Two shades mellower than franch oboe and it would just fit in perfectly in your overall sound I think.

I used the oboe d'amore only on 2 occasions but it was really good and there are plenty of articulations too get exactly what you want to do wit a particular phrase.

If you own that instrument, trying the wide variety  of dynamic articulations would do wonder in that piece. I just love the dynamic articulations, it brings so much life into a phrase and improve the realism as well.

Very nice work overall!!!

19.solo strings and live performance 11/26/2013 9:02:10 PM

Hi Stéphane,

First, I have to say I love the piece.

I tried it quite loud on my system but I don't get the harsh sound you mentionned.

I am curious, in what kind of environnement you recorded the live instrument?

Because, I know it is a challenge to insert it in a virtual setup afterward.

It's sounds realy good (particularly the cello).  Well, I'm a bit biais toward the cello...

With that kind of mood, the MariaStr... does an amazing job.

I just recorded Arvo Part   Spiegel im spiegel and it sound very good in that church.

20.Vaughan WIlliams: Rhosymedre VSL 11/25/2013 3:58:10 PM

Hi Michael,

About the wet dry slider,

I didn't meant to ajust the individual instruments but just take the instrument that are the further away and then play with the room wet dry slider as it will determine the max depth of the room.  When your are satisfy with that, usually, the other instrument fall into place as VSL room are pretty well calibrated.

I would fiddle with the wet/dry parameter of an instrument if I have an instrument solo, (oboe or clarinet would be a good candidate for that but then just slight ajustment would usually do the job)

As Dietz mentionned somewhere, the visual placement of instrument can be misleading as we tend to organize according to what we see and not what we hear..

So trying different instrument position first  and then if needed ajusting  individual wet/dry slider .

Since you mentionned that you did that with Notion, then its pretty good!!

I use Notion just to enter the note, then I export it to cubase.

You have much more control then. But a bit more work.

To vary the tempo, I agree that Notion is not very flexible but you can export it to a DAW and then draw your tempo curve precisely.

That method does not require too much work.

Have a good day!

Jean Roy

21.Vaughan WIlliams: Rhosymedre VSL 11/24/2013 9:16:23 PM

Hi Michael,

Here is my 2 cents worth!

Generally, it's sounds quite good.

Some suggestions for improvements:

I would use more subtle changes in the tempo track (rall, rit, etc.) as well as more dynamic contrast to enhance the different musical phrases.

I like dynamic change  you do at 1.52.

The basses section parts (bass and cello) are not define enough in the left - right plane as well as the depth of the room.

(I don't know which mic position you use but it may be too far away.)

Take the pizz section for example, personally, I like to hear the the direct sound clearly define of the pizz from the  left side and hear the reverberation of the pizz sound filling up the rest of the room. (the indirect rebound of the sound) It is particularly stunning in a real concert hall.

Right now, it seems to come from somewhere in the back as well as the reverberation. (less interesting in my view)

You could have a good idea of the sound if you play with the Dry/wet parameter of the room while you listen to one section at a time and ajust accordingly.  The room you use is very interesting, I use it a lot too...

Maybe you can enhance the dynamic shaping of different voices.  (like between 1.30 and 1.42)

This would enhace the awareness of these different lines and hence it would become more interesting to the hear.

Keep up the good work!

Jean Roy

22.Orchestration of Chopin Étude Op 10 No 4 (by Guy Bacos) 4/18/2013 1:23:19 PM

 Hi again Guy,

If I may suggest another Chopin study that would be very interesting for wind instruments, it is opus 10 no.2.

Jean Roy

23.Orchestration of Chopin Étude Op 10 No 4 (by Guy Bacos) 4/18/2013 1:45:07 AM

Hi Guy,

I really like it a lot!

Even though I'm a little bit of a  purist and I know the piece very well, you manage to capture the essence of the piano performance and bring it alive in this arrangement. I like it a that speed even for piano performance.

Great sound too, it sounds a bit different than most of your other demos, not sure to explain exactly why though. The orchestra sounds clearer than usual but it maybe in part because of the arrangement itself...

I like the way you use the percussions (snare drum in particular) . Really creative!

HI Philippe,

I did enjoy it too.

If I compare to your previous entry, I think the general atmoshere of your mix is a lot better.

I love this music very much,

Jeep up the good work

Hi Philippe,

It's been a while that I wanted  to work on that piece.
