1.!! SYNCHRON BRASS !! 8/23/2021 1:19:59 PM

Psychoacoustics is a big topic for all libraries that were recorded in a big hall like our Vienna Synchron Stage (and that room-sound is an integral part of the sound). Changing the perceived volume of an articulation isn't something we'd suggest to do, which is why the difference between Velocity 1 and 127 is only 3 dB for those articulations.

In our eyes, this is also a question of workflow, as you can generate any kind of dynamic change by using the Expression Controller, which is the main task of this controller anyway.

"Timbre Adjust" will be an even better option at this point, with it's very natural dynamic changes.

I believe that you could achieve the results you are after by using 2 MIDI Channels, with the sfz on one channel, triggering Timbre Adjust with your player Velocity. Definitely worth a try.

Best,
Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the very detailed explanations about this. That would be helpful and I will try what you suggested.

The "Timbre Adjust" is a very cool feature. Love this library. Thanks again.

We have limited the dynamic range of this articulation to make it fit better with the rest of the articulations. You can easily adjust the volume with Expression (CC11), if you like.
Hope that works for you!
Best,Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for quick reply. I did use CC11.

But, what if I use this two articulations in customized stack patches e.g. Sforzato+Sus, Sforzatissimo +Crescendo to make something I need. What I want is when I press harder I get more powerful note attack, the less hard the less note attack, this should be under control. But since this two articulations wouldn’t response to the velocity and VelXF control, I wouldn’t get what I want. I know someone would use staccato instead but that sounds not natural as Sforzato and Sforzatissimo. REALLY wish this could be add back.

Thanks again for reply.
3.!! SYNCHRON BRASS !! 8/23/2021 1:11:58 AM
Hi Paul
I have used Synchron Brass for a while and it has such good sounds.
I found that Sforzato and sforzatissimo cannot respond to velocity and VelXF. Is this made on purpose?

In Other libraries the sfz and sfzz patches are responding to velocity and VelXF. I think this is still useful e.g. when playing Sforzato or sforzatissimo, sometimes it needs to be drag down to create more realistic dynamic at the right time in progress. So could this feature be added back in synchron brass as in other libraries? In that case, to users they have one more choice on how to use patches, to the libraries they have the same logic in controls.

Thanks!

9.About library update and MIRx 8/8/2013 4:04:11 PM
Hello Paul

I noticed that many libraries' Date are 2013-06-23 00:00. Does that mean those libraries have been updated? Does MIRx needs the new libraries to use or old libraries still OK with MIRx? Should I download the whole libraries again? I just downloaded them in March this year and they are too large. My SE date e.g. SE_Volume-1_Percussion_05.dat is modified in 2012-12-08. Should I redownload? Are there any just update files to update my existed libraries? (I remember there were update file for old libraries long time ago.)

PS: I have Dimension Brass, Dimension Strings, Special Edition

Thanks!
10.Portamento 9/27/2012 4:49:29 PM
Me too. I also want to know how to do this. And Paul, can a video be made to explain how to do this? I have SE and recently I bought Dimension Strings, the portamento speed/time is always a issue for me.
11.Dimension Strings 9/24/2012 7:41:36 AM
Really really really really like this library. Sounds so realistic. But still hope more players library will come - like another 8 different players - So that'll will be 16 together. In that case the sounds will be better then 8 players + 8 players by this library itself (right now if using 16 players it just more or less doubling the sound simply). Really hope this will happen in future to allow users to group 16 players or more. Thanks for VSL team hard work.

PS: Which is next release of Dimension Strings? And when? Is there a time plan?

Hi guys,

To clear this up: The actual uncompressed file size of the Dimension Violins is 85.7 GB. The space needed on your harddrive is 2/3 of that space, due to the loss-less real-time decompression we established in VI.

So the actual size after install in this case is approx 58 gigs, or 2/3 of 85.7... (is this correct) ???

In PC Windows - Download size: 33.5GB Installed size: 51.7GB

Hi Mark,

There will be more demos, there will be more videos. Promised.

Did you read this thread yet?

Hi Paul, I'm reading the post now. I understand a little now which you mentioned

If you want to hear a stronger melody line with just the Dimension Strings,
e.g., in the lower register, you´ll be surprised how effective it is to let 8
violins play sul G, and another 8 violins sul D (and then sul D and sul A  and so on).

But since we haven't got the library yet, hope more videos explanation will come soon. :) We all know VSL team is busy doing biggest effort on every project. Thanks you guys for hard work!!!!!!!

My point was, why do I

gotcha! I agree. I would prefer a Violin II dimension section as well. Honestly, I'd prefer a larger ensemble to begin with. But I'm still very pleased that this has been released and I'm buying it in a few weeks nonetheless. :) But I do agree. I don't think it's 'bad product' or anything, but ideally I would prefer not having to take such additional routes to acheive the right result. It should be right to begin with. This allows for the fullest flexibility of the samples.

I agree with both of you guys. Whatever VST we add to make a sound into another sound is not enough, besides that's not sounding natural as recording some more. And recording more is just a simple and effective way.

I prefer larger ensemble too. 8-players sound is thin in my own opinion. As Herb said it can not be used to replace 20-players sound. The 'Dimension' idea is very cool and VSL team has done great job on it. So we like this very much.

But I still hope VSL will do something to make this Dimension Strings larger ensemble. Such nice library but only 8 players. May be release something like 'Dimension Strings 2' which recorded by another 8 players? If that's true I believe most of us won't mind the money and will buy. If so that's very very cool and it will become the most amazing library in the world.

And hi Paul,

There is only one demo mp3 and one demo video. For now only few people got the whole library and others are still downloading. So we know little about Dimension Strings now, but we know there are only 8 players, by simplely doubling the track or add some effects could not work well. So I want to ask Paul for a favor: can you tell us how to do if we want larger ensemble sounds only using Dimension Strings? Can some video tips and tricks made to explain this and more about Dimension Strings? Thanks!!!!!!

The speed is up now. Thanks Paul and the whole VSL team's effort on it. Hope the speed can keep on.

Hi Jack,

Should be much better until noon in Vienna, hopefully before. I´ll let you know as soon as more performance is available, and you should definitely see an increase in download speed then.

Best,

Paul

Its hapenning NOW !!! 6 servers double speed!!
still 9 hours only. ( better than 20 h something is it) whoooah!!,where do I put my pillow?

That's nice. But nothing changed now. When I download Dimension Brass, it's still 40k/s. :( Hope VSL can speed up their download system.

Indeed VSL team should improve the download system. The speed is tooooooooooooooooooooooo slow.

Hi FredB, could you make some short demo for listening? Especially 8 players ensemble and some with 2nd violin. Thanks

Unfortunatly, I can't for the moment. I'm busy on a (non-orchestral) project for the next 2 days and the setup I use now is too different. But it will be a pleasure to do it after that if nobody else have done it.

Hi FredB that's OK.

How does the 8 violins ensemble sound? Some says this library sound a little thin. What do you think?

And based on it sounds, can it be used alone or should have to be layered with some other string library?

I've been playing with the Dim Violins for a day now, been lucky enough to grab it in only 15 hours on the first day.

God! This library is really impressive.

It's 61 GB after decompression. I recommand using fast drives, SSD or multiple drives, it's a lot of samples to stream.

I've been able to create a second section using MIR positionning. I just duplicate the first 8 violins and positionned the players differently. Dose'nt have phasing issues, not that I could clearly hear. But using different string position (Forcing Sul G,D,A,E) would be even better. It's amazing how a musical phrase can sound different played on other strings and the portamento created when using Force G and others are so musical.

Using the time humanization for short notes like pizz works really well.

This is not a sketchpad for composing, it's really for a final production and extreme tweakability.

It worth the wait.

Hi FredB, could you make some short demo for listening? Especially 8 players ensemble and some with 2nd violin. Thanks.
20.Will there be some "Dimension Strings" ? 9/18/2012 2:25:36 PM
That's true 8 players is a little thin. If you really want to use it you may probably will have to mix with other library. But we can assume this: what if someone only bought the Dimension Strings and he has no other string library? After all there is only one demo mp3 and one video on violin. We can not see the whole image of Dimension Strings until 2013.

So really want to know how you guys see this and want to listen to more people's advices.
21.Will there be some "Dimension Strings" ? 9/18/2012 11:36:43 AM
Finally the Dimension Strings comes. It's fantastic. But only 8 players maximum. It would be very lovely if more players were recorded.
22.Will there be some "Dimension Strings" ? 4/25/2012 5:49:36 PM
Hi Paul and guys in VSL,

I'm a Dimension Brass user and a big fan of VSL. I like this library so much. As we see in these two years almost all the major sound-design companies are working on strings library, such as EW, LASS2.0, Cinematicstrings 2.0, 8Dio Adagio Violin(they will release cellos violas basses in this year), Sonokinetic....Those libraries are more and more realistic and easy to use. Especially the legato techniques are so improved these years. VSL is awesome. But to be honest, VSL's strings library could not always sound so great in some way. So after years, will there be a new library such as Dimension Brass in near future? We are all looking forward to hear some big news from VSL. Thanks for you guys hard working.
