1.MIR/MIRx Users - Konzerthaus Grosser Saal or Teldex? 8/6/2014 9:27:22 PM
J.Hall wrote:
I am currently trying them as demo licenses. You could do that as well! Anyways, I like Teldex more for film scoring. Grosser Saal would be my choice if I wanted to emulate a proper classical sound, I guess.

I did try both a while ago but ran out of demo time.

I ended up going with Teldex for now... can't wait to get my activation code!

2.MIR/MIRx Users - Konzerthaus Grosser Saal or Teldex? 8/3/2014 5:13:19 PM

To MIR/MIRx users who have both venues - which of the 2 do you find has a warmer, fuller sound and can be more easily mixed with non-VSL libraries like Symphobia and LASS?

I am looking to purchase a MIRx extension for my VSL Special Edition collection - if you were to recommend one for general soundtrack/trailer/library/film/tv work which would it be?

Thanks Smile

3.Which audio interface for VSL in 2013/2014? 1/14/2014 5:42:09 PM
Dietz wrote:

I would stay away from any USB-2 audio interface as long as you don't need it for a notebook with no other connectors.

Hi Dietz...why is that? So you would recommend the HDSPe AIO? I'm just afraid that PCIe cards will soon become outdated, just as Firewire is on its way. Plus if I upgrade to a new Mac, I would need a chassis for the PCIe card..expensive solution!

4.Which audio interface for VSL in 2013/2014? 1/14/2014 5:24:41 PM

Rather than make a new thread, I thought I'd gatecrash this one and chime in...

I would like some advice. I want to get an RME sound card for my Mac Pro 3,1 running 10.9 and 24GB of RAM. I had an Apogee Duet 2 but am not happy with it as the latency is not low enough for me. I run many demanding plugins and virtual orchestral instruments and also want to connect some Roland electronic v-drums to my set up and record with the lowest latency possible.

Which interface would you recommend? I was considering the HDSPe AIO PCIe card or the Babyface? Any thoughts? My budget is around £400-600. Which card will give me the lowest latency and best performance? I also want something that can easily be used in a new Mac in case I decide to upgrade my system. The Babyface is USB 2 - is it not a good time to get one? Are RME soon updating their cards for USB 3 and Thunderbolt?

Happy new year! Smile

6.Mac Pro PCIe or External SSD 11/4/2013 4:01:31 PM

...If you want to know about older MacPros like my 2008, I'll tell you how I set it up. (basically a bunch of SSDs on an eSATA III bus on the PCIe 2.0 16x bus. I also use SSDs in RAID 0 on the internal SATA II bus and get 480MB/s with two SSDs.

I also have a 2008 Mac Pro (2.8 GHz 8-core, 24 GB of memory) and was considering spec'ing up my machine internally with SSDs. I was looking at this PCIe card:

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempossdpro.html">http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempossdpro.html

Do you think this would be a good choice? I am unsure if it's worth investing so much in a 6 year-old machine vs. getting a Mac Mini i7 (with internal SSD) to use as my master and linking up my Mac Pro via ethernet / VE Pro to stream my samples.

What do you think?

P.S. sorry to hijack the thread!

8.32 Midi ports in RTAS? 3/5/2013 8:53:37 AM

Have there been any updates since this thread with regards to 32 midi ports in RTAS? I'm running Pro Tools 9 - is it possible to open 32 midi ports? In the VE Pro manual the following is written:

"Used as a VST 3/RTAS plugin, up to 32 ports are available within Cubase, Nuendo and Pro Tools."

This is somewhat misleading if untrue...?

9.MIR Pro with LASS & Samplemodeling 10/23/2012 9:27:39 PM

Thanks for your message.

Hmm.....it all seems a bit too complicated to me....I'm a composer, not an engineer ;-)

10.MIR Pro with LASS & Samplemodeling 10/23/2012 12:05:49 PM

I am just trying out the MIR Pro 24 demo as an AU in Logic. I am messing around with LASS but am having difficulty panning them. I listened to the advice here on using the Power Panner to centralise the signal before putting it on the MIR stage. However when I then move, for example, the Basses to the right (by the edge of the stage!), they don't seem to be panned enough to my liking.

Does anyone have any tips on setting up LASS instruments in MIR Pro?

Thanks

Orchestranova,

Yes this RocketRaid eSata card is fine for your early 2008 Mac Pro (giving you an affordable / Raidable Sata III upgrade)...

If you're only planning to use a single SSD, the speed will amaze you.

RunnIng two SSD's in Raid 0 is unbelievably fast. You have to see it to believe it.

All this made possible by RockefRaid's true Sata III 6gb performance.

As for the SSD itself. You can't go wrong with the OWC EXTREME Pro 6g.

P/S: If you don't intend to run in Raid, and you don't need to BOOT, a 6g Sata III card can be had for less than 50 dollars on the very same OWC site.

Hi Mike and co.,

I am seriously considering an SSD for my Mac Pro Early 2008. With regards to your post, if I want 6 Gb/s speeds what components would I need? Do cards such as the RocketRaid require the SSD to be connected externally? What if I want to insert one into one of the HD bays inside my mac?

I've been considering this SSD:

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT512M4SSD2

If I used this bracket could I still get SATA III speeds in my Mac Pro model?

Hi Nick,

That is unlikely to happen, since VSL moved all their collections to download-only......!

13.When will we finally see (NEW) VSL libraries ? 8/20/2012 11:04:43 PM

Wow guys - chill!

Why do you think I am expressing my frustrations? Because I don't like VSL and don't wish to support them and use their products in the future? Of course I do! I'm just saying that it can be frustrating, as a customer, to not have a clue what is going on when you are in the market for new libraries and so badly want to stick with a developer you trust (VSL!). I am not saying I wish for VSL to disclose release dates on future products....just some rough plans as to what they are intending on doing! That's all! I think the OP can see where I'm coming from here...

Regarding my "expensive" comment ...I am merely stating the obvious! I guess I take back the term "outdated" - VSL's samples sound great and they haven't needed to update their samples due to the brilliant VI Pro.

If VSL were planning on releasing a plug-in version of MIR / future libraries from the Dimension series / etc. it would be great if they could let us know...it's things like that I would appreciate...

muziksculp wrote:

I see no issue, if VSL would let us simply know if they will be releasing NEW Orchestral Libraries in the near future.  I mean just a Yes, or No, would be sufficient, no details needed.  But if they choose to be totally secretive about this, that's their choice.  I find this secretive model a bit outdated these days, more developers are being more open, and transparent about their future products, and plans, and are becoming more interactive with their customers, which helps both developer and end-user make wise decisions/choices.  imho. this would be more beneficial than harmful to VSL, What's the problem with beocming a bit more transparent in the area of where they are heading in the area of sample developement. The competition ?  I don't think that's an issue for VSL !

Maybe we will see something New from VSL  during Sept. 2012, as far as Orch. Libraries are concerned.  Afterall I don't think they have abandoned the sample library development part of their business model.  OH ...then again,  maybe they did  Confused

+ 1

...I must say I am getting a bit sick and tired of VSL's secrecy when it comes to informing their loyal customers of future products. Carrying on like this will only detract customers and steer them towards other competitors who have adopted a much better, modern approach....especially when VSL's products are so much more expensive and becoming more and more outdated in comparison!

15.Brass library in Christian Kardeis's VI PRO demo? 8/11/2012 12:00:23 PM

Peter Alexander wrote:

And the answer is...

Hi Peter,

This was Christian's response regarding his use of VSL Brass..

"...Regarding how I get this Brass sound, I have to say it is a mixture between Brass I and Brass II. I never use the Horns from Brass I, because they are different in Vienna to the rest of the world. Not only construction wise but also in timbre. I always use the Triple Horn and Horn Ensemble from Brass II...but do use the Trombones from Brass I. I would recommend to get Brass II and in addition to the Single Instruments Tenor Trombone Full and Trombone Ensemble Standard.

What I like from Dimension Brass is again the Horns and the Trombones. But they are not so different in tone compared to Brass I/II (it's more geared to writing separate lines for all 4 different players). I guess it's because of the players, room recording chain...well this still is a VSL product..."

Hope this helps!

Hi guys,

Would you happen to know if this RocketRAID card would be appropriate for my Mac Pro Early 2008 if I wish to install an SSD?

What SSD would you recommend? Something like this?

Thanks!

18.Brass library in Christian Kardeis's VI PRO demo? 7/2/2012 7:59:37 PM

Would it be possible for someone from the VSL team to PM me Christian's email address? I sent him a PM a while ago regarding some brass purchasing advice but he never replied.

Thanks in advance!

"The legato performance is the same for the special edition and the DVD collection, they have 2 velocity layers..." Hang on, is that true? I have the SE also and was hoping to upgrade. I was interested in getting the performance trills and the glissandi, but I thought I'd be getting smoother dynamics as well.

I was also concerned when reading this - I thought the DVD collections had more velocity layers (even in the legatos)??? How about Dimension Brass?

I too encounter this problem with the SE brass. DG what do you mean by filter controller? Thanks

21.Just Installed VI PRO - Now Final Cut will not open! HELP! 5/26/2012 9:28:06 AM

Hi Ken,

I had a very similar issue but with the Vienna Suite. I contacted the VSL Support team but they did not actually find a solution at the time.

In case what they suggested to me helps you, here was the message:

----------------

Do the Vienna Suite plug-ins work normally in a DAW on this same computer?

Do you have an elicenser with a valid license for Vienna Suite connected to this computer?

If everything else fails, please move the Vienna Suite plug-ins out of /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components/ and /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST/ - this should ensure that you can at least launch Final Cut Pro.

If this is the only solution, I will have to investigate further to find what might cause your problem here!

Best regards from Vienna,
Marnix Veenenbos

Hi Christian - thanks for your reply. I love your compositions!

Would you mind telling me the instrumentation for the brass in this track? I am unsure whether to purchase just Brass I or if I also need Brass II to get that sound? I have the Special Edition with the Epic Horns patches already you see...

Thanks!

It is in the nature of "bonus files" that they are FREE, so you didn't pay for them when you bought the Special Editions back then - which was good, I guess ;-)

Ah...you see, the concept of "bonus files" was never explained (is it defined anywhere in the manual or on this site?) - I didn't realise that bonus files did not have an upgrade path and were free. I was under the impression that when purchasing the Special Edition libraries you were still paying for the bonus files but that they were simply add-ons to the regular SE patches..
