1.Trumpet in Bb - Leaping Notes 12/1/2014 5:49:13 PM

Hi everyone (again). I was away for a long time since I have some other things to do, so in the meantime I had made a Trumpet in Bb piece that I actually got 1st place on a Classical Music Forum (Not Serious) Competition and I wanted to do post it here and receive some feedback.

2.Trumpet in Bb - Leaping Notes 5/17/2014 12:43:54 AM

I composed this piece for Trumpet in Bb for fun. It just needs some mixing to sound better.

I hope you enjoy and comment/criticize!

3.How does it compare to EWQL Symphonic Orchestra? 4/16/2014 1:37:50 AM

And now EastWest has banned me from their forum for admitting one of their products has a show-stopping bug:

Seriously or is it a joke? EWQL has really banned you from their forums? I've always thought they were pretty bad but... that is really... really bad sign for a "BIG" company... Hmm

4.Best weighted key midi controller? 1/19/2014 2:34:01 PM

That is amazing! I'd love to known how much is one of these?

5.2014 - A good year for good wishes! 1/1/2014 3:20:41 PM

I wish everyone that is part of VSL (Team, Musicians) a Happy New Year! And all the people that owns VSL too!

PS: Does this topic belong here?

6.My wishes for Vienna Instruments 12/30/2013 12:53:58 PM

Car Horns? No. Bicycle Horns? Hm... No. Barking Dogs? Maybe in Octaves. Hungarian Scales? Maybe... with consideration. Stick out tongue

I'd expect something great that VSL can do in the future with Dimension Brass. I'd like Mutes choices for this and more articulations for it. Dimension Brass is already good on what it does. It is great to know that Dimension strings will have Con sordino library, but I'd love to see Dimension Brass with Mutes. Multiphonics are indeed something that I would like to see in the future.

For Woodwinds, I'd expect a Bass Oboe for a next library, but I don't know. Heckelphone is quite sufficient indeed... Furthermore, I'd like to see a 2nd Clarinet and 2 more Clarinets but in A. For Brass, more mute choices. A reminder that this is just a wishlist.

Vienna Imperial Half-Pedal is a "must" that needs to be there. Not trying to be arrogant or meanie face... Smile A good piano sound needs half-pedaling for realistic purposes and we all know that.

Cheers,

Ricardo Castro

7.Any developments on Dimension Brass? 10/6/2013 8:17:13 PM

You know what I expect to be in the Extended Version, Con Sordinos. I love Mute Brass very much, and if VSL does it. VSL is doing and an amazing and stunning job with Dimensions Strings, that for me I'm quite surprised and shocked. This is why I love VSL. Wink

Offtopic: Do you think VSL will ever release a Bass Oboe or Heckelphone is a good replacement? Confused

8.What do you expect to be in a VSL Library or Collection? 9/30/2013 8:28:53 PM

I love every VSL Collection, some more than others. What I expected to be in atleast overall instruments, is Vibrato for all instruments. Cool I know Viennese Orchestras can fire their musicians for playing vibrato on some certain instruments, to avoid you play non-vibrato so you can have a more clearer sound.

For the Choir I expect a WordBuilder like EWQL, so you can create your phrases, it will be great when you start creating some Operas. Dimension Brass extended is another feature I would love in brass, Mutes will be highly appreciated. Wink

For the Woodwinds, a Bass Oboe and a second Clarinet either in Bb or A. I always like to have a Bass Oboe, I'm not sure if this is in VSL plans any soon. Hmm

Give your opinions here what you expect to be in the future VSL collections. Most people are highly satisfied with the products, others not so much.

10.Three new MIRx demo's with VSL string libraires 9/27/2013 11:18:26 PM

Erik, I love all these demo's and my favourite were all the three. I love Appasionata snap pizzicatos, they sound amazing. In my opinion, It would be wise to combine, Appasionata, Chamber and Orchestral Strings with DS. They give you amazing diferent type of timbres.

Cheers,

Ricardo

There is already one post with the same discussion.

12.Poème in C - Bosendorfer Imperial. 9/18/2013 8:15:28 PM

Thank you very much Errikos! I appreciate it! I'm continuing this song, even though the process of composing is very slow. I really want to do something very interesting and intriguing to hear step by step and not all at once. If you liked what you heard so far, wait till I have it finished. I surely will turn up a notch and the rhythym even more interesting and more build up to the final tension.

13.Poème in C - Bosendorfer Imperial. 9/17/2013 11:30:33 PM

I composed a Poéme for Piano, it is not completed yet, it is half-way throught. Just wanted to get some thoughts of yours about this song. Please criticize and put your own personal criteria. I'll be glad to hear.

Those sound very good to me.  The clarinet is excellent - I have no  criticisms. On the bass trombone maybe more breaths, because if you've ever been playing next to one, you'll notice it takes a huge amount of air to create those low notes, especially with crescendos.  So if the samples emulate that it makes it sound more natural.  But it does sound very good as it is.

One other thing I noticed is something that I also have difficulty with and have no clear solution - when you switch to a crescendo sample, the overall amplitude of the note is different than the mf or p sample, resulting in an artificial sudden change.  This is obviously because the recordiong had to be made at the loudest volume that the crescendo reached, which is lower than the mf or p samples.  So some way needs to be found to equalize those levels, which I know is not easy.  Maybe you can figure out something there.  One thing I've thought of but never done is to reduce the dynamic range of the crescendo sample a little so that it matches better at the very start the level of the softer surrounding notes and then does not go so loud as to become unuseable.  DG might have an idea on that as he always has many solutions to various problems.    But anyway it all sounds very good in general.

Thank you William, when I done this piece with bass Trombone it was a very long time ago. So I took that as consideration, because in another forum I had the same type of criticism, like the breaths and a bit unnatural and artificial crescendos. That is true and I think developing pfp samples for bass trombone would be great if you want that 'piano to forte then to piano dynamics'.

In the bass Clarinet there are 2 layers with pfp and some of the  other dynamics, so you have more options to go like instead of going for piano, you have some sort of mp or mf. The Bass Trombone is a diferent case, which I'm trying to get an hold of. I have so much to learn about VSL and its techniques and tips. I'll take that tip of reducing the dynamic range in mind.

In the meanwhile, I did another test with Bass Clarinet and bass Trombone and I understand what you said clearly and it sounds a bit artificial, the dynamics, maybe it was the way I used it.

Thank you very much for the criticism William!

15.Musescore - Is it compatible with VSL? 9/14/2013 1:33:36 AM

Cyril, you should prove to William, showing some of your scores here. To be honest, I never heard any music from you and I really wanted to! I posted some of my scores. So you can show to william that you know how to use notation softwares and Logic.

However, I did two snippets with the bass clarinet and bass trombone(the sheet music was actually posted in the previous comments). I'm not sure if you guys noticed but I posted in composition section and no one ever noticed. Still I'll post it here. I did these with Sibelius and I wanted some feedback about improving my scoring in sibelius and in terms of use with VSL Library products.

17.Making a backup of my Vienna Instruments USB key 9/13/2013 1:30:52 PM

This thread has been brought considerably ammount of times.

Imagine if the timespan of the usb dies, then you are majorly screwed.

Since you gone like 5k in libraries and then the usb dies like a year after, that feeling must really be bad and feel that you already lost a life.

There is something you can do which is moving the licensing information to another usb drive from one vienna key to another.

18.Musescore - Is it compatible with VSL? 9/12/2013 6:36:33 PM

Don't worry William, I understand. Finale is great for High quality sheet music. I prefer it instead of sibelius. In Sibelius, I have quite a pickle of doing a good-looking score but Finale has conquered its place with High resolution sheets. That I can't deny. (I still love Sibelius because of the playback)

Here is something for both, Cyril and William. Don't make comments on software you don't know or even tried. Never, ever judge a program to be bad... if you want to blame anyone, blame the user. Finale and Sibelius are both great programs. They are unique and fantastic. You just need to get the hang of it... I agree with William, don't criticize 'Finale' by going over the marks and stating it is absolete and awful because It is not.

William learned the basics of Finale and more of it. I am still getting the hand of Sibelius 6 and 7 in the conservatory. Certainly for starters it is an headache.

Cyril, I am not criticizing you in this. I understand you but if there is someone that is more experienced than us. We need to listen, because they know what they are doing. Just like me. I made a really bad commentary (Not involving swears or anything) in one of parts in the forum. Just that I said that VSL needs to add more layers and William told me because of ignorance that I need to learn more about samples. So I took that as a base to learn new things.

Also, you can try with Sibelius and Finale. Sibelius is very good on what it does and Finale too. Try reading some user commentaries to help you out.

(Here will be a list of my songs done with Sibelius 7. Forgive me if the links I posted, I just wanted to show some of my work I did as a student. I have enjoyed sibelius 7 very much that I am quite fond of it. (I also know this is not the part of the forum for these type of things)), ((I used Dropbox))

Some Scores I did with Sibelius 7 at the conservatory: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2738795/Improv%20in%20Bb%20Minor%20-%20Darkness%20-%20Full%20Score.pdf

20.Modified Sound Sets and Presets for Sibelius (Dynamics, Fast Rep, Grace Notes, and Custom Cells... 9/11/2013 4:17:07 PM

I managed to get the Trumpet in Bb working properly. Now I'm missing the bosendorfer Imperial soundset. How do you use it?

21.Musescore - Is it compatible with VSL? 9/11/2013 3:27:46 PM

Sometimes, I question if you guys will get along any time soon. This post was originally for Musescore debate if It was compatible with VSL and afterwards you guys turn it into a fightfest between Cyril and William. Are you willing to close every post out there? You two turned this topic discussion into rivalry for you.

My main question: Do you guys achieve anything by arguing? The last time a thread got closed because of you two. Are you willing to close this topic as well?

23.Short piece for cello and orchestra 9/11/2013 12:45:51 PM

Beautiful piece I got to say. It really captures the mood of an odyssey. Really eery and touching at the same time. I got to love these type of music.

24.SE Bosendorfer and full Bosendorfer 9/11/2013 12:21:52 PM

Oceanview: You can change the mic positions but it will sound unreal. The mic positions just give you the position from where it is standing. In this case you have one that is close (Close to the Piano) and one that is distant (Distant from the piano).

25.Modified Sound Sets and Presets for Sibelius (Dynamics, Fast Rep, Grace Notes, and Custom Cells... 9/10/2013 7:55:24 PM

Thanks. I'll try it out. I'm sort of a newbie in this. Btw, how do you work and trigger the Dynamics that has fp and sfz with the bass clarinet in this occassion?
