That is irrelevant. We bought a 3 machine product. It is now being downgraded unless we want to pay substantially more.
Quote:

So yes, the upgrade is expensive, but it isnt the same price as Ensemble 6, and most users are probably not upgrading 3 licenses.

Right, so VSL will be downgrading them, even though they originally purhased a product that would work on 3 machines, now they will feel compelled to be downgraded to a much more limited capacity. In my view, the base product should include at least one local and one remote server license.
Quote:

If anyone should be upset, it should be me. I literally just purchased VEP6 in December 2018. I get no special discount. Vienna isnt providing any sort of grace period.

Yes you should be.
Quote:

The reality however is, Vienna has found themself in an impossible situation because they priced Ensemble 6 in a terrible way by not allowing people to purchase 1 license at a time. They are attempting to fix this.

That is not intellectually honest. They are providing new purchasers with an opportunity to get in for a bit less with one license option, and I do think that is a good idea. But existing customers that already purchased a more expensive 3 machine product are being punished. They do not need to make it more expensive for existing customers while getting new customers in cheaper thenever. There are plenty of ways they could "fix" the problem you surmised without doing the latter.

Quote:

The bottom line is simple. Wait until they announce more details before you buy.

At a bare minimum all upgraders should at least wait to see. All we konw as of now is that it will have FX added. Me personally, even to justify $85 for one license I would need to see substantial improvements to the product. But the simple truth is that I am being asked to pay money for something, that as far as we know has FX added, and we are expected to lose multi-machine networking unless we want to pay kind of a tidy sum...for as yet unannounced features. As I have said, if VSL comes out with some breakthrough new thing that is so incredibly amazing that I can't imagine not paying another $250 for it... ($500 total in one year's time)...they will probably get my money...but I really am not expecting that. I am expecting a few little things updated + FX...and unelss I want to pay through the nose.....LOSS of functionality in terms of networking a few extra machines in a pinch. I will gladly stick with VEP6 and wait for VEP8 someday to reconsider.

1. You use the word "downgrade", meaning, you will be getting less than what you have now. That is simply not true. Nothing is going to change. You keep your VEP6 licenses, even if you do upgrade. You arent being downgraded, nor are you being forced to upgrade.
2. Vienna is not reducing the amount of machines you can use. You can continue to use VEP6 until you are ready to upgrade to VEP7.
3. Yes, they are charging money to upgrade, just as most software suites do for major software versions. Is it a little expensive? Yes. However, of course, you fail to even acknowledge the point I made several times, VEP7 will go on sale several times during the year, including when it launches. You wont be paying the retail price.
4. I am a little miffed, but not enough to come on here and scream about it. It is an expense, one that Id rather not pay, but one that I am not too concerned about. I have bigger issues with Vienna than a charged software update (I have Smart Speheres that I currently cant use because it has a feedback issue and I dont have the free time to sit down and try to track down which sounds / effects cause the feedback issue, or, I could discuss how VI, MIR, and Vsuite are all seemingly going to become obsoleted because Synchron seems to be the only thing Vienna wants to support, meanwhile, several of their libraries are woefully dated, solo string instruments lack vibrato controls, the choirs are lacking severely in articulations, etc.)
5. No one knows about whether VEP6 and VEP7 will communicate with each other. That is an assumption being made. However, nothing is stopping you from CONTINUING TO USE VEP6 ACROSS THE BOARD! Nothing is changing. Vienna isnt saying, VEP6 will stop working when VEP7 comes out. The release of VEP7 means that VEP6 will eventually no longer be supported and end of lifed, but not before youve had ample opportunity to pay for the update, and before VEP6 is obsoleted, VEP7 will have gone on sale numerous times, giving you ample opportunity to upgrade.
The bottom line is, its a paid software upgrade. One I think we can all agree, is a bit pricey, but not out of this world pricey, unless you are upgrading 10 licenses, then I will admit, this is pretty pricey.

Well, telling customers that the update is about as expensive as full price of the product they payed before seems always critical - telling them they get some fx code and samples they already might have and payed for in another variant ( libraries and Vienna fx and fx pro) as a great new feature might not make it seem a better offer.
And those customers might not care about Steinberg update policies, or Apple policies (as they also know what they get for 200€ with Logic Pro on the other hand).
And they bought VEP as a solution and do not want to spend time on how one can or cannot hack a system to that VEP6 and VEP7 might work together because some want to tell them this is still the best deal ...
And there is no logical reason why VSL cannot (of course they do not have to) offer single licenses AND an attractive update for 3 licenses holders. This does not seem to be a contradiction. Of course, VSL is free to choose their pricing and marketing methods and strategies ... but customers are as free ...
I wanred ro keep out of this discussion because it leads no where - it does just seem to generates non-sense arguments IMHO ... oh well ...

such an offer would make sense IMHO - never touched Epic Orchestra 1 - but would definitely want my 3 VEP licenses to stay at the same version.

3.Another problem with the Vienna key 12/16/2016 11:22:56 AM

Well, dongle s*****! And with the e-licenser there is a lot that is questionable IMHO (USB, low manufacturing quality (iLok 3 looks much more trust worthier), and the owner of e-licenser is also not a reference for rocket proof and hassle / bug free software)

On the other hand - I also want to get paid for my work and i want my work to be considered valuable and not given away for free or copied without agreement.

However, it would be great if in the age of information processing, Internet, artificial intelligence, IoT etc. outdated concepts with hardware on not well performing software could  be replaced by something more sensitive to the fact that the costumers payed quite some money and want to have an acceptable user experience and not being treated like potential criminals.

There is hope that a technically skilled enterprise like VSL might also advance in this domain to more modern concepts (which include good UX which their software products - leaving out the protection - offer).

Just my thoughts.

Do you have the newest elicenser-center - the latest update seems to need a newer version than the last release

6.Do I need to save Instances separately? 8/14/2016 1:14:56 PM

The Frame/Server saves the states of the projects (single VEP instances), which in turn save the states of the instruments.

So, if you want to save the states of the projects so that you can load them into other Frames/Servers you can save them separately, however, you do not need to.

hope that helps

yeah, maybe you should address Apple and Microsoft with your wish - VSL is right to support the look and feel of the platform IMHO

8.VEP6! 8/6/2016 11:32:35 AM

Well, from the images it really looks like UI design was not a main focus during development of VEP6 - more like they lost their UI designer or he/she was occupied with other projects. Very functional UI with not much dedication to details or style IMHO.

The old UI was not perfect and very limited in terms of flexibility but at least ok to look at.

9.The Sage Gateshead / RoomPack 4: Three new Venues for MIR Pro available now! 4/19/2013 5:22:10 AM

Hello, are there hotspot regions overviews available for Sage Gateshead? (The active regions.) Hotspot regions always seem a bit over traditional, conservative and ....

Also for the other room packs?

thanks

10.Controller 1/15/2013 5:34:02 AM

well, I have a Kawai MP10 and for me it just feels like the only true piano keyboard on digital pianos. so the kawai vpc could be great.

MP 10 shouls also be an alternative ... much more affordable than some other options, great keyboard ( if you do not need aftertouch), some assignable controllers ...

phope that helps

11.eSATA (over Thunderbolt) vs USB3 1/10/2013 5:27:35 AM

Hello there ...

happy new year.

ok, with USB 2 it was never a great idea to use external storage for performance critical tasks -due to limited bandwith and CPU overhead of USB.

Did USB3 improve in the CPU overhead department as well?

For my new mac I am thinking about which way to go for sample drives - USB3 or eSATA over TB .... is USB3 a valid alternative by now? or is it better to go eSATA?

thanks,

12.More Dimensions Pre-Sale Questions: FAQ? 10/26/2012 4:25:49 AM

to 1) I would not expect that. it should be the same in terms of CPU but RAM is totally different. If you have the staccato articulation of chamber string loaded into 8 VIs it gets effectively only loaded once. if you do that for DS, as no samples are shared or the same between the eight different players I guess, it will load 8 sample sets, msking it use 8 times the RAM of one player. not so with chamber strings with one articulation loaded into 8 VIs.

13.Any chance of supporting REWIRE 10/14/2012 4:19:40 AM

IMHO the problem with rewire is that the Midi connection is not in both directions (or did they finally get that right?) so you need some external MIDI routing which is not sample accurate. rewire is only great if the Master/Host is the workhorse ( doing MIDI sequencing, audio recording and mixing) .

As VEPro does not do MIDI sequencing and audio recording -to me -it does not seem to be a good host.

just my opinion.

14.Could someone from Vienna suggest how many threads to use. 9/21/2012 4:09:48 AM

another question - is cores referring to physical cores only or to virtual cores (e.g. i7)?

would be great to be able to map aftertouch - ok, one can use input transformers in most sequencers, but not in all of them if I am not mistaken. best

17.Will Vsl be affected by Gatekeeper 7/18/2012 4:21:36 AM

why should we not, especially when being concerned about things like Gatekeeper and knowing that developers were able to access the beta for months now.

what to wait for - for OSX 10.9? might just be a couple of months ... so, deverlopers better support stuff right away or they will be versions behind ...

18.Using Libraries Directly In a DAW 4/27/2012 4:02:43 AM

you have to install the Vienna Instrument ( or alternatively the VI Pro) and then it the VIenna Instrument will show up as a plugin.

hope that helps

19.portamento and glisandi speed 4/19/2012 4:10:04 AM

for some instruments they come in different speeds I think. so you can use the matrix and a controller of your choice.

of course with VI Pro 2 you should be able to make your own variations with time stretching und again use the matrix and a controller of your choice.

hope that helps

20.Re-Installing OS reduces the number of activations? 2/2/2012 5:22:51 AM

unlikely. the license is not bound to the computer but to the elincenser key. you can but one key ( = one activation) on as many computers ( one at a time) as you like. just do not break or loose it. that is the positive aspect ( one of the few) of the licenser key.

hope that helps

21.System Recommendation for VSL (Apple) 2/1/2012 4:45:58 AM

well, saying that Lion is too new and saying indirectly that leopard is an option - hmmm, I would not follow that argumentation. snow leopard was a great OS and I think it is definitely still an option. Leopard was the worst version of OSX. On macs you can easily configure two partitions, one with snow leopard and one with Lion. I would go that way. The OS itself and programs do not take that much space, most space is taken by samples and other files, so you can keep OS partitions reasonably sized.

22.VSL key - no is a standard eLicenser key? 1/28/2012 10:05:07 PM

Hello,

just got a VSL key from a shop. came in a VSL Vienna Key packaging, but inside a standard eLicenser key (no more Vienna Instruments label on it and no VSL demo licenses on it)?

Is that the new standard?

Thanks

23.Why oh WHY can't Vienna use an iLok? 1/28/2012 6:13:28 AM

well, seems easy - iLok is good on Mac and erratic on Windows, syncrosoft good on Windows and erratic on Mac. for me as well - zero problems with iLok ( but also with Yellowtools Wibu or Logic Key) - lots and never ending headaches with syncrosoft.

i mean, one buys samples for thousands of euros ( high priced product -and high quality product) and then needs to get a piece of plastic that is poorly manufactured, feels cheap and fragile ( the drivers on mac are exactly that as well) to copy protect it. if you run into problems they tell you to connect the dongle to a USB-port on the computer and not to a hub - how realistic is that as a solution? maybe they should buy Apple and other manufactures first so they can command that computers have at least 16 USB-ports for all the dongles, USB interfaces, keyboards, mices, etc.

Alone this support answer it outrages - to me it is an expression that they are not that interested in problems their users have with this dongle.

24.How VSL treat their customers! 1/25/2012 9:45:31 PM

I think most of us agree with you, that you have the right to protect your property. but, does that right include to take property from others away just to prove that you want to protect your property?

for me, as a user a protection theme is good, if it does not bring additional costs, does not cause trouble and if I am do not have to take responsibility for malfunctioning of the copy protection.

for the syncrosoft key in combination with VSL it is the opposite for all three aspects. Wow. So, as a honest user you have to take over responsibility for all the bad things that can happen - just because the world is not ideal for software developers and sound designers. If the copy protection is not as effective to have a reasonable replace policy for honest customers, My personal feeling is - there is something wromg with this system. (now, one can discussion what is reasonable, but, just count your licenses and multiply it by 20 and you can decide for yourself)

I also cannot see that the whole industrie is moving in that direction. Waves, Logic, Korg and Yellowtools got ride of a dongle. So do SPL, Brainworks etc, with Plugin Alliance. also PSP got rid off the dongle. If you refering to the Steinberg surroundings, ok, there you might be correct, but that is far from the whole industry IMHO.

The non-communication is just ... well, normally in such situation silence does not do too much good. we will see were this leads.

I just prdered a new dongle, the old one did not show any symptoms ... well, maybe Greempeace should send Steinberg and VSL some document for really wasteful usage of resources and energy due to such policies.

25.How VSL treat their customers! 1/21/2012 6:54:48 AM

hmmm, cloud was me as well ...( more as an example that the connection of pieces of plastic junk seems like of a different epoc of IT engineering)

having no control and getting charged - that is exactly the situation with the current key as well. additinally it seems that VSL has not really too much control either. one has to pay money for a piece of plastc crap (the key) that works on a mediocre protocol (USB), and then has to worry that it does not break. it slows down and for some has even worse other ways it unpleasantly affects user experience. and for all that VSL and each customer pays a lot of money.

if that makes you feel being in control and not getting charged -good for you. some might feel differently.

mileage varies of course,

best
