1.MIR status 2/5/2005 11:55:53 PM
What's the status of the whole MIR project? I haven't heard a thing in quite a while.

I was thinking of getting something like Waves IR, but I'd rather not get it if MIR is coming out any time soon.

By the way, does anyone know if the Waves IR library has multiple responses for each space? For example, do they have different positions on stage so we can place instruments at different spots, like with Gigapulse? Actually I still need to explore Gigapulse more too...
2.Popeye's 75th anniversary scored with VSL 12/19/2004 3:05:24 AM
Just to clarify, I meant the show sucked, not the music! I'm mad because I didn't see this thread beforehand. I would've liked to listen!

I guess I don't come across too clearly sometimes.

Incidentally, I never say anyone's music sucks. People spend hours making it, and anyone who says such things about other peoples' music can only be doing it to feel better about their own. And if they have to do that, their own music must REALLY suck.

I try giving constructive criticism: X could be done better, Y sounds good...

Funny.. I have no problem saying a TV show sucks though.. LOL

DAMN!!!!!!!!!
I actually saw some of it on TV last night after the Simpsons and thought... this sucks...CLICK
Then I read this thread today.

4.why no mutes? 10/30/2004 11:30:38 PM
I suppose you're right Andy. It's just that it's such a big hole in the library. You really can't call it a complete orchestral library without brass mutes. I just hope they don't leave out obvious stuff like this in the Symphonic Package and then charge us later for it when they do get it done.

But here's one issue. Let me ask you this question: Wouldn't you have rather had brass mutes than obscure instruments like the Cimbasso, Bass Trumpet, and Wagner Tuba? If you listen to orchestral music, brass mutes are used WAY more than any of those instruments. Could it be that it was easier to do those instruments than brass mutes? Maybe, I don't know. I'm curious as to how many people have actually used these instruments in their music, and how often.
5.why no mutes? 10/30/2004 12:55:01 AM
They didn't do mutes so they can charge more for them when they do release them. It's a business after all!
This is really the only thing I can thing of, since muted brass and strings are so common in orchestral music.

Actually there's another hypothesis: they didn't know how common mutes are. But I don't think they're that incompetent, or incompetent at all.

If I'm wrong, maybe this will get them to explain the real reason to us.
6.Windows and Mac Topics 8/21/2004 10:37:18 PM
Why can't users just put "(Mac)" or "(Windows)" in the heading of the post, if the post is platform specific? I don't think that's too much to ask of people.
7.No Mutes in Epic Horns?? 7/6/2004 5:26:22 AM
No mutes doesn't make any sense to me either. It would be nice to get an explanation of why they were omitted.
8.Please post your setup and process- 7/6/2004 3:41:09 AM
Yeah I use FX teleport with giga files that were converted using Translator and CDXtract. The latest Kontakt does have native import of Giga files. I'm not sure how good it is.

The FX teleport delay is only around 11ms, which isn't too bad. It's not much of an issue really. It did take a while to get FX teleport working though. I had to decrease the video setting to get the latency down from one of the computers. I'm not sure, but I think you only get this latency from live playing. When you play a sequence there's latency compensation in Cubase SX. Maybe someone else can answer that.

By the way, what kind of work are you doing? Film, TV, classical?
9.Please post your setup and process- 7/5/2004 8:52:22 AM
Lucky you! Maybe I should have asked max to be a beta tester.

Folder tracks let you organize tracks in Cubase. They also let you edit several tracks at once. You should look it up in the Help. Basically I have a folder for each instrument, then several tracks within that folder for all the articulations I need for that instrument. All you do to create one is choose folder track when you add a track. It's in same menu as the other track types.
10.Please post your setup and process- 7/4/2004 8:58:37 PM
You already have the Giga VST adapter? How did you get that? Are you a beta tester?

Anyway my setup is pretty similar to yours. What you need to do is creat a template in Cubase with most of the instruments you use. Use folder tracks to organize the whole thing. Then when you open that file it automatically loads all your samples, via FX teleport and all you have to do is sequence the music. I have 3 main computers and VSL is split across all three. I have Sibelius 3 too, which is great, but right now I only use it for making simple piano versions or sketches. I do the orchestration in Cubase. My template is pretty big with 200+ MIDI channels so I can't really use Sibelius for that.

Right now I'm using Kontakt (around 40 instances) since I don't have the Giga VST, and it's working fine so far.
11.Dynamic layer disparity (any solutions or workarounds?) 6/19/2004 7:53:33 PM
I basically used the filter method. I put a lowpass filter on the loudest samples with cutoff assigned to MIDI CC11. So whenever I need something between the mf and ff I lower the cutoff. It seems to work ok. I use Kontakt and I think the filter is only on the loudest sample, but I'm not positive.
12.Legato clarinet problem 6/5/2004 5:26:21 AM
For some reason I'm missing the C4 to D4 transition in my legato forte clarinet, KLB perf F. C4 is middle C. Is there a fix for this somewhere?

Instead of that transition, I get the C4 to C#4 transition when I play C4 to D4.

13.Legato Tool - Strings 5/29/2004 10:27:59 PM
I've been ignoring the release time setting. I wonder if it would help in fast legato passages. It's difficult to get fast runs with the legato patches. I'd like to see separate fast legato performance patches, or maybe spiccato perf patches.

14.MOD Wheel samples 5/26/2004 10:15:19 PM
If you want to play them live you need a mod wheel on your keyboard, or something you can assign to the mod wheel midi message.
You can still sequence with them though and write mod midi messages on the midi track. You of course need a sequencer like Sonar or Cubase to do that.
It sounds like you might be a beginner at this. Maybe you should visit
www.harmonycentral.com. They have some good pages on MIDI.

15.Strings: mixing sustains with fast runs 5/25/2004 4:37:53 AM
I'm having trouble with string phrases that have fast bowings as well as long sustains. How do you guys do this?
I've tried the staccato patches as well as others but it's not quite convincing yet. I've tried using the legato patches but they can't play fast enough. I've also tried using the 0sus 4lay sus patch, which is pretty close, but still not totally convincing.

Will there be a spiccato performance set for each of the strings, like that for legato? Now that would be realy cool. The legato perf only works on moderate to slow parts for me.

16.Symphonic Cube : More velocity layers? 5/11/2004 7:58:54 PM
I totally agree Plowman. I don't even use the basic instruments at all because of the bad velocity switching. I don't get how we're supposed to use programs like that. I guess we're supposed to choose which velocity we like, and then add programming like filters in order to adjust the sound the way we REALLY want it? It's a mystery to me...

Even some of the normal programs, like the solo trumpet, have bad velocity switching. I'm considering another brass library because of this problem.

I sincerely hope the Symphonic Cube fixes some of these problems.
17.brass Mutes 4/26/2004 7:59:09 AM
I really want those brass mutes too. Right now I'm using the Xsample library mutes, so it's not totally critical. It definitely is a huge hole in the library though.

I don't know of any paper by Truespec, but I do have a PDF made by Don Buckley called The Sibleius-Gigastudio Interface. This may be the one those guys are thinking of. I can email it to you if you send me an email.

I think I should explain my background here.

I made my MD at the Academy of Music in Cracow, Poland,
studying the cello first, and then composition with K.Penderecki.

Wow! Penderecki? Lucky you! I actually don't have a whole lot of his music, but recently I got his violin concerto no 2 performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter, and it's an amazing work.

So how was he as a teacher? Any secrets you'd care to share?
21.VSL, Sibelius and Sequencer too 2/11/2004 7:34:01 AM
I just tried something pretty interesting. I'm running Sonar, but I really hate the notation editing in it. I can work with Sibelius way faster, so I found out a nice way to use it and Sonar at the same time.
I have MIDI over LAN, which gives me loopback MIDI ports, so I'm sending the Sibelius MIDI output to Sonar via a loopback port, and Sonar is just like a server with all my tracks of VSL virtual instruments, some of which are on another computer with FX teleport. I can still of course use all the audio editing stuff in Sonar like EQ and effects to customize the sound.

Is anyone else using Sibelius like this? I just tried this out tonight and it seems to work ok so far. I haven't tested a full orchestra yet though. I think it's nice to be able to use Sibelius until I HAVE to use the sequencer for certain editing. At that point I can just export to MIDI and then import that MIDI into Sonar.

Incidentally, notation program makers and sequencer makers ought to come together and make a notation plug-in standard, so that the user can view MIDI data with whatever notation program they want. Anyone know if this sort of thing is in the works?
22.Latin percussion 1/29/2004 11:00:26 PM
I'm doing a latin project and am wondering why there isn't much latin percussion in the percussion library. No conga, bongo, or timbales. Any plans for them in the symphonic edition?

24.How/where do I get the free Glas & Stones, pleez? 12/30/2003 8:52:35 PM
Is this special just for people who upgrade after the offer was announced? I got the Pro Edition just after it came out. I'm just making sure I don't miss free samples!

25.Any plans for more velocity layers? 12/14/2003 10:35:15 PM
Just as an example, I think the solo trumpet needs another velocity layer before the loudest one. The transition is just too abrupt. I'm sure there are other instruments that would benefit as well.

Are there any plans to record more velocities for the solo instruments? It's particularly important for them since crossfading doesn't work, as it does with the string ensemble.
