1.VSL Ensemble Pro5 can't see server on my computer in the instrument plugin 8/21/2014 2:33:12 PM

After your 3rd try, when the instances weren't showing, did you look at the VEP servers on your slaves?  If (for some reason) they still showed as 'connected', then they would not show up in the list as available.  If so, just force disconnect them.  Then they should show up.  I have occassionally had issues like this, while working in ProTools 10 HD.

Maybe that is what is going on with your system....  just a thought.

2.Mac Pro - Review coming shortly 6/14/2014 5:59:29 AM

hetoreyn,

Have you experiened any weird ADC issues while using MirPro24 as a plugin?  I'm running ProTools 10.3.8 on a Hackintosh (10.8.2), and have had a fairly bad experience with timing issues.  VSL tech support has said that PT v10 has ADC issues, so I haven't really been able to ascertain exactly where the issue lies - seems to be a combination of VSL and PT.  Running MIrPro definitely works - but when I have other reverbs added on Aux's, such as Exponential Audios PhoenixVerb - which has latency of like 43 samples typically - when run with MirPro it has latency of over a thousand samples...  But, aside from that, I've just had weird timing issues in general.

Have you experienced any of that?

Thanks!

3.Help with VEPRO and External Midi 4/18/2014 3:51:07 PM

I was real interested in it for a minute, as I have a lot of old Giga stuff converted to Kontakt that I'd rather do from one MIDI track.

Maybe this would be helpful:  http://www.orangetreesamples.com/mind-control

Don't know if you've seen this, but Orangetree Samples make some great, intuitive and musical libraries, with lot's of scripting.  The programming is very good, and would think Mind Control is as well.  The dev is very responsive to questions you might have as well.

4.Crescendo Patches 4/6/2014 7:39:07 PM

You can also manipulate the cresc/dim via cc11, and lessen the loudest part, ramp up the volume a bit after to change the dim characteristics, to make a more gradual arc, etc.  This, in conjunction with using the Stretch function will give you lots of ways to alter the straight cresc/dim samples.

5.Transferring Samples from Mac to PC 4/6/2014 4:29:54 PM

I had to do the same thing about 4 years ago - move my sample libraries from my Mac over to PC.  Like you I thought it was a simple thing to just transfer them across the ethernet connection.  And, like you, I ran into problems.   In the end, I just re-installed everything (all the big libraries anyway) from the master disks.   It was much easier and hassle-free - it just ate up some time.  I also transfered small libraries (couple GBs) via USB stick.

My advise would be to just reinstall.  Put on some good music and start feeding DVDs into your drives...... :)

6.[SOLVED] Dimension Strings Legato - note off 4/3/2014 2:33:54 PM

I was curious, so downloaded your midi file.  It opened in Sibelius...  You say that there's a legato transition into note #3.  In looking at the part, the G note overlaps the E note.  A legato transition would be played.  I would expect that.

Not sure if you use Finale or Sibelius to write and it plays your VSL samples from there, but I don't.  I record my parts in my DAW, and perform accordingly.  Any time I have a transition I don't want, I just shorten the preceeding note.   When I'm recording, I don't really care what it looks like, just how it sounds.  I make the edit and move on.

But, if you look on the Advanced tab on the Advanced view, you'll see that the Interval Threshold is 50ms on a factory patch.  If you double-click the number field you can change it.  Maybe lowering the thresholds would get you the behaviour you're looking for.  You'd need to change it for all of the Dim Vlas then...

Just a suggestion.

Best,

Greg

you're right - it was rather a rant than a suggestion ;-)

HAHAHA!  Hmmmm... maybe that is what's going on.  I know someone who is comfortable doing terminal stuff, and will ask a few questions.

Thanks for that info.

9.incoming network connections 4/1/2014 5:09:32 PM

Thought I'd chime in.... Paul, what suggestions by CM?  I'd characterize his post more as a defense of why it's not working, and pointing it in Apple's direction, and how they have done a 'firewall for dummies'..... :)    He does mention that possibly the issue could be fixed by doing something in terminal - but then says he couldn't actually find any info on it.

The issue we are having is that in OSX firewall, we have set it to allow connections to VEP, but are STILL getting the message popping up asking us to allow or deny incoming network connections.  I just did a quick test -- took VEP out of the 'allow incoming connections' list in OSX frewall, and launched VEP again.  It behaves exactly the same as when VEP is in the 'allow connections list' in OSX firewall.   The only way to make this popup window go away is to turn OFF the firewall completely.

To me, that sure seems like the issue is with VEP.  I don't get this popup with any of the other apps that I have in my 'allow incoming network connections' list - just VEP. But, it's not like it's a show-stopper or anything, just one more thing we have to do when launching our rigs at the start of a new day.  For me, it's just a small hassle - not that big a deal.  But, it would be great if this could be sorted out so it worked as it should.

Thanks.

Best,

Greg

Thanks, Paul.  In the meantime, we're just going to have to click the 'allow' button.   Man, that's a lot of work........... Crying

The other question - what about the MIRx for contrabass?, I tried to change position of double basses but it didn´t happen, it´s position is central

Viktor:  I think you are referring to the same thing I ran into yesterday - you turn on MIRx for the new dimension basses - and NO spatialization.  See if this gets it working:  go to the REVERB tab in ViPro --> click on the 'gear' to the bottom left of the Dry/Wet slider --> change the Latency setting to something (1024).  Now MIRx should work.  It did for me.  HTH

Paul, any ETA on dimension Basses MIRx settings?  At the moment we just have some generic spots.

Greg

14.Pro Tools 10 and VE Pro 5 delay compensation 3/1/2014 4:50:58 PM

OK, I'll check that out.  But, I just noticed that VIPro2 was updated about 8 days ago, and saw this:

  •   Fixed: Incorrect latency compensation when disabling MIRx

This might explain the timing issues I was having before this - I was switching over from using MIRx to MirPro.

15.Pro Tools 10 and VE Pro 5 delay compensation 3/1/2014 3:38:22 AM

mafiacondon:   I saw above that you asked whether it was an Avid issue, a VSL issue, or both.....  I contacted VSL support several (like 3+....) weeks ago as I was having crazy timing issues - I had recently purchased MirPro24 and was using it in PT10 as a plugin.  Tracks would be in sync, then not in sync.... reboot.... in sync... then out -- very maddening, and very hard to get work done.  Support asked for a session, which I gave them and I also sent a crash report.  Very uncharacteristically for VSL, I have heard nothing back -- must have gone down a rabbit hole.... :-)

From Martin's comments above, re: that latency comp was somehow not fully working properly in PT10 (but was with another SDK which was used for PT11) seems to verify that there IS a latency issue that VSL is aware of... but that it is an Avid issue.  However, as it seems to be affecting VePro, doesn't that also make it a VSL issue?  Seems to me that it does.  Telling us PT users to 'contact Avid' seems like a finger-pointing excersize to me.   :-)  That is why I posted originally - to get some more information and/or clarification from Martin about the issue.

So Martin, if you could plz expand further on what you know about this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

18.MirPro-->Mirx mode - Natural Volume auto-resetting to OFF 2/27/2014 4:43:30 PM

Thanks for the additional info, Dietz!  Dunno about the volume changing -- I'll just chalk it up as a mystery right now.... :)

BTW, since you're here, I do have a few questions that I cannot find any info on in the manual.  1) what is the benefit (or ramifications) of changing the Impulse Response Cache Size?  and 2) what are the differences between the Dry/Wet slider in the top section of a MirPro icon setting, -vs- the dry/wet offset at the bottom?  Do they interact?  If so, how?

Thanks for any more light you can shine on this awesome software!

Best,

Greg

19.MirPro-->Mirx mode - Natural Volume auto-resetting to OFF 2/27/2014 3:17:35 PM

Thanks for the explanation, Dietz.  I understand what you are saying.  But the issue I experienced is that once I engaged the Natural Volume button while in MirX mode (ie MirPro)  (which then lowered, for example, APP Vln by 5db), ..... when I revisited this a few minutes later -- I found the Natural Volume button to, for some reason, have become UN-engaged, and the volume back to 0.   This has nothing to do with my understanding or not understanding the differences between MirX, Mir-X mode, or MirPro..... :)  I did not turn natural volume off, it just switched itself off....  I experienced this with App Cellos and also App CBs.  I did not see this happen with any other strings (Chamber or Dimension... just APP).

BTW, maybe you could explain this:  My understanding is that you ported over to MirPro the great MirX presets that you made.  So, when I engage MirX mode in MirPro, and switch from the MirX versions of, say Dimension violins 1-6, shouldn't they sound exactly the same in MirPro?  It seems to me that they should be... however I have found that they don't.  When you switch to MirX-mode, does it take the settings that we have made in MirX in VIPro, and translate them to MirX-mode.... or does it load up your original preset (before we have tweaked the wet/dry setting, for example in Mir-x)?  I have tried translating the strings I had and really liked with MirX, and found that the wet-dry balances don't match - the MirX-mode settings seem skewed more toward dry.... (i.e. the left side).

Best,

Greg

20.MirPro-->Mirx mode - Natural Volume auto-resetting to OFF 2/26/2014 7:59:45 PM

I've just noticed something very strange.  I have set up MirPro using Mirx mode.  I have enabeled natural volume on all Mir instances.  I was just randomly checking something (selecting Vienna Mir Pro tab at bottom of instance), and noticed that Appassionatta Vlns (I), cellos and basses had all had their natural volume tabs de-selected for no apparent reason.  So, instead of VOL = -5, it was set to 0 (Nat. vol off).

I have MirPro inserted on the channels that contain the VIs.  This is on Win7 PC, and nothing has been touched in the instances when this occurs.  MIRx is in 'bypass' on the reverb page of the VI.   I am using VIPro 2.4.12844, VEP5 - 5.3.13045.

Has anybody else seen this?

- Greg

21.incoming network connections 2/26/2014 3:58:38 PM

Just checked - when I turn my firewall on, and VEPro 64-bit (the one I use) is also listed, I get the same message:  'Do you want the app .... blah, blah, blah.....Deny/Allow'.  When I turn my firewall off, it works without that 'Deny/Allow' popup coming up.  So, this does seem to be a VSL issue then.

- Greg

22.incoming network connections 2/25/2014 4:07:01 PM

If you go to System prefs (OSX)/security and privacy/firewall.... what do you see?  I'll bet your firewall is on.  For some reason recently, I went there and noticed my firewall was turned off, so I turned it back on.  All of a sudden VEPro started giving me this message in a popup window.  When I clicked OK to allow the connection and it then worked.  If you turn your firewall off, I bet this message goes away...

So, my question is - should I be running OSX with firewall off??

23.Pro Tools 10 and VE Pro 5 delay compensation 2/25/2014 2:06:16 AM

Martin, could you plz explain a bit more about what you are talking about.  PT10 upgrade was quite expensive, and delay compensation was implemented before this version.  Would be good to hear VSL's perspective on this.  At the very least, in order to know what information to follow up with Avid.

I have been experiencing some strange timing delays using VEPro 5 and PT 10 - but not really until I added MirPro and used it as a plugin in PT10.  Have not been able to find out what the problem really is... I sent tech support (VSL) a session (and a crash report), but never heard back anything from anyone.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

24.Pro Tools Track Presets PROBLEM!!!! 1/23/2014 4:47:26 PM

I'm running VEP5 on a couple slave PCs and Protools 10HD on MacPro.  I would recommend ditching the PT instrument tracks and use separate midi tracks, aux and audio tracks, routed accordingly.  Yes, it will use more voices, but it works well.  When I switched over to VEP a few years back, I also tried using instrument tracks, and they were problematic.  Not sure why.

Also, one thing that I have noticed in the past, is that creating a template session with channels setup, and then importing those tracks into PT does not always work as expected - outputs not working properly, not passing audio, passing wrong audio....... this is what would occasionally happen.  Sounds like what you are experiencing in your post, if I'm reading it correctly.  This was discussed on a thread several years back, with both Avid and VSL pointing fingers....  So, I no longer import.  I make a large template that I save, and just use that session as my starting template for larger projects.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

25.Problem with Sample Modeling's SWAM engine 1/12/2014 5:47:45 PM

I have had no problems having a full orchestral brass section (4-3-3-1) as well as Woodwinds (10 or so) instantiated in VEPro, on Win 7 PC, running in 64bit server.  Of course I'm not using them all of the time, and I also only ever have 1 GUI open at a time, while I'm working on a particular part.  The issue you are having (not the multiple GUI issue), would seem to be OSX specific.  I missed that you were on OSX when I first skimmed through this thread...
