Episode 7 – Visual Tuning

The lowest notes of the “contra” instruments (such as the contrabass trombone, contrabass tuba, contrabassoon, contrabass clarinet, etc.) are not only a major challenge for the musicians, but also for our editors. When it comes to evaluating the pitch of short notes of the contraoctave and sub-contraoctave register, tuning devices are especially prone to the same limitations as the human ear. And when human hearing and audio technology reach their limits, the other senses have to take over – in this particular case, the eye. Developing an eye for waveform graphics as a visual reference can be very useful for recognizing the amplitudes of sine waves of different frequencies. This was the ultimate solution for perfectly tuned samples even in the inaudible abyss below the “contra C”.
