The name bassoon derives from the French basson and Italian bassone, and makes it clear that the precursor of the modern bassoon was mainly used for accompaniment. However, composers in the baroque era, e.g., Antonio Vivaldi, already wrote dedicated concerts for bassoon and orchestra.
