  • New member here, greeting the community!

Ah yes, ah yes. The sweet melody of violins in the morning. A cup of tea and slice of bred shall do. But do you ever stop and think to yourself, "Gee, I wonder if VSL company could sample food?" Don't you ever ponder alternate realities? For example, what if VSL was actually VSD? A good question! A good question, indeed.

Vienna Symphonic Dinners... Such a company would not multisample violins, flutes, and trumpets, oh no. Such a company would be multisampling foods! Foods such as grapes, turkey, and cheese. Yes, such an alternate reality would turn bedroom composers into bedroom chefs. Now imagine this: eating a techno of analog-synthesized food created out of basic food "taste waves", mixing in some VSD samples to create your very own perfect new age dinners! Doesn't that sound nice?

    Now I ask you this:

    -Do you love making music?
-Do you dream of music, do you breathe it, do you think of it every day?
-Do you eat it and drink it?
-Do you put it in the microwave and heat it up? If only VSL was actually VSD.

    Hello, I am Argitoth. [[;)]]

  • Hello Argitoth,

I think VSL should probably stay clear of the processed food market. The silent stage might not be so silent. [*-)]

I have a few questions about this community. It seems the community is very mature, I'm guessing that's because you won't find a bunch of 16 year old looking for orchestral libraries reaching close to $1000. Actually, I'm turning 17 October 1st.

So, I was browsing a lot of the threads and I found a thread where I wanted to respond, "HAHA, PWNT!", but I stopped to think. Is this community made up of so little young-lings that a response like that is unheard of? So that's my question. How old is everyone?

16 here. I've been using reason for 2.5 years and I want music to be my career. My goal is to make $4000 by the end of high school, I have about 8 months to do it. With that money I will buy:

    Cubase SL 3: 329.00
    Komplete 2: 829.95
    Epic Horns: 275.63
    Stormdrum: 299.99
    Opus 1: 799.99
    QL Ra: 799.00
    Total: 3333.60

Whatever money is left over will be spent on misc items such as a new soundcard, synthesizers, or libraries. The last few weeks I've discovered how Reason is such a TOY! It's so basic! I can't believe I never knew how great reason WAS NOT! Well it's time to move on. That's my life story in a box. [H] Here's my latest creation: Automation.mp3 (needs work)

  • I'm so old, I don't know what PWNT is. I'm young enough to know how to search for the acronym on the internet. But just old enough not to bother.

Congratulations on being both seventeen and having the ability to form complete and cohesive sentences with a minimum of typos and spelling errors. You are ahead of your generation in this respect. Now go celebrate with some bred and turky.

By the way, when I was your age, I'd walk ten miles in the snow to play a Six-Trak, with six monophonic voices, and I LIKED it.

I will leave you now to your perf-leg pizza and cross-faded beer. And welcome to our time-challenged community.

[:D] Pwnt is not an acronym.

Pwnt --> Pwnage/Pwntage --> Ownage --> To have owned someone --> To have been much better than the other usually during a competition.

Also, spelling errors have been fixed. Plowman, DaveTubaKing, what are the libraries and software you use?

  • "Pwnt is not an acronym."

Yes, it is. It means "Plowman Will Not Transliterate." (Thanks for the education. I searched it. What a strange term.)

I own the VSL Pro for EXS, Garritan Strings, Vitous Strings, Roland/Power Translators, and many other libraries since relegated to a zippered CD case since the advent of VSL and its kind. You've arrived at a good time.

Have you considered Logic? I've never used Cubase, and I hear it's refreshingly direct and accessible. But you're young, and if you are true to your ambition, Logic may serve you better in the long-term. When considering VSL, the tables tilt a bit in that direction because of the native EXS format (though most of us here run both EXS and Giga).

And while I'm doling out un-asked for advice, check out Virtual Instruments magazine if you haven't already.

  • Thanks for the advice, but it looks like Logic doesn't support Windows/PC any longer. Also, I need rewire capability, I cannot ditch Reason. I did check out the magazine. I would subscribe, but I don't even have a job yet. I still need to make $4000, I've done the math. Only if I get lucky and spend almost nothing in 8 months I can do it. I'd have to work 21 hours a week at $6.5 an hour for about 7.3 months or $7 an hour for like 6.5 months. Also, it requires me finding a job before OR on the day of my birthday. Heheh, I've really thought this one through as you can see. I'm a noob, all advice is welcome.

If you are using PC then forget Logic. Cubase is a first rate audio application and would serve you well (but make sure that you get SX, not the other varieties). However, in order to run the big libraries you will need to use Gigastudio, as only the Horizon series is available for KontaKt or HaLion (not that I am able to recommend either of those). Currently GS works better on its own PC, but it is possible to run it on the same PC as Cubase, either in rewire mode or as a VST by using FX-Max Giga VST Adapter.
Both Cubase and GS are available with an Academic discount, so that should help the budget.

  • Ah, interesting advice DG, but why must I have Cubase SX3? Why not SL3? Also, I don't plan on getting Pro Edition for quite a few years. By the time I have enough money for Pro Edition is the time I have enough money for a renovation of my studio. For now, Horizon is quite adequate. Plus, there are so many useful things you get with Native Instruments. Lastly, I do not want to purchase academic versions as I might get screwed when I want to upgrade the programs. Is this true, does anyone know?

One last comment: Can someone please show me other genres besides STRAIGHT CLASSICAL made with Opus or VSL in general? Fantasy-type stuff, big band, ethnic ensembles, etc.

    HOLY JACKPOT: http://www.vsl.co.at/en-us/67/3848/4498.vsl

Quick question: Is it possible to get a really strong and loud ensemble out of the snares? Aka: warlike/snare ensemble type stuff Aka: Marching band

SX is for Pros, SL is for kids [:D] Seriously, there are many features that are in SX that are not in SL that you may want to use, depending on what you want to do in music.

If you want to use NI then be my guest. So far for me (day three) K2 is unusable.

Regarding Academic licences, there is no problem upgrading AFAIK.

That's sounds disappointing. Why's that Daryl? I was thinking of getting it.

At the moment I get a BSOD every time that I unload Kontakt when used as a VST, so I am currently trying to route it so that I can use it as a standalone (which sort of defeats the point of buying it). When I get a solution I'll post back. However, as you're on Mac you may not have the same problems, or maybe just different ones!

    DG

  • OK Daryl thanks. That's offputtiing though.

Well, it now works in standalone mode with the PT and no crashes, so I'll just have to keep asking about the VST version. ON NS Fizbin thought that it could be something to do with Memory Lock, but as I can't find anything in the manual about this elusive setting, I guess that we'll have to wait until Seattle wakes up. Shame it's no longer sleepless [:(]

  • You can't make a claim such that Kontakt simply doesn't work. Lots of people use it. [*-)]

Errrr, you need to learn to read. I haven't said that it doesn't work, I have outlined a specific circumstance where it doesn't work for me...

Apparently it is not in N2, so just to confirm I can't use K2 as a VST in Nuendo3 (yet). What a waste of money [:(]

  • It's not a friendly thing to call someone illiterate...

Hello J Marcos, tell me about yourself: Libraries, software, hardware, age, career.

  • Can't stay long as i'm on a flying visit to Tallin, and sitting in an internet cafe at the moment.
Daryl, i'm certainly no genius at tech stuff, (although i do know my way around Parchment and quill), but seeing as you have the program, i'm wondering if it's worth trying to 'wrap' K2 in a VST wrapper. I know this might sound daft (probably is), but if the wrapper program reconfigures inputs and memory usage, plus program parameters, as it's designed to do, would this actually 'force' K2 to conform to a particular method of resource use? And if it doesn't work, maybe the wrapper program's diagnostic reporting would give you a clue as to the real problem?

Regards to you and the rest of the neighbourhood from sunny Tallinn in Estonia!

    Alex.
