  • Logic 9 locking up when initiating VI window

I have a modest orchestral arrangement with the "old" VI for each track. When I press the "show window" for a given instrument to see it's interface, Logic stops responding, with spinning ball. I sent a log of this to vsl support yesterday. This seems to have been a progressive problem, as initially, Logic did not behave in this way.

    Thanks

    Rob Welsh

Mac pro 8 core, 9 gigs of RAM

    Logic 9

    Most current VI build 3710

  • I had the same problem-in fact it occurred with logic 8 also and an earlier VI build.I fixed it by uninstalling VI ,re-installing ,rebuilding the directory, fixing permissions etc.My system is similar to your own,

    Best,

    Ray

  • I might have to try all of that too.  I am getting this now too for 2 days straight.  First I had issues with the USB key, took it off the hub and it worked perfect.  Now this.  It just never ends.

It seems the more it crashes, the more it makes things worse too.  The file system seems to get slammed and hosed more and more each time it crashes.

  • Don't fret :-)

Update the licence control centre also-If you do a thorough blitz and re-install i'll put money that it will sort your problem.

    Best,

    Ray

  • This may sound obvious or even stupid but have you tried logging out and back in again, or even shutting down and re-starting? It sometimes helps to start fresh.......

  • Yea I did all that.  Newest VI and Newest LLC.  Complete uninstalls and reboots and file repairs.  I have even tried going back on old versions.  I am almost thinking that the new LLC is what caused my USB problems.  It started happening right after I put on that new version.

  • So...

You still have a problem or is it sorted?

    Ray

  • I have tried all of the above mentioned ideas to no avail. I sent some log reports to Maya and am awaiting his reply. I have no idea at this point. what it is.

    Thanks for the input

    Rob

  • Frustrating....

I'll tell you what i did and in what order, for what it's worth...

Downloaded and installed LCC 5.4.18.6-Restarted computer.

Uninstalled VI & VE, Reinstalled Latest VI..(Not VE as i don't use it at the moment..)

Opened Directory manager, dragged and dropped instruments, reset custom folder...

Repaired permissions in disk utility-twice!-restarted machine...

Opened VI standalone, loaded an instrument, all worked fine, closed app.

Openend Logic 9, in Preferences/Audio units manager  reset & rescan vienna instruments.

Opened an empty Logic song, loaded 1 VI instrument-this is where i expected prob but all was fine. After this point older projects with VI worked as desired.

Maybe the sequence is important?-I say this because the chain of events was suggested elsewhere in this forum(by Maya?) and seemed to suggest some success. It worked for me this time on a mac pro, as it had done previously on a Quad with earlier Logic and VI builds.

I find a lot of computer problems and solutions as baffling as homeopathy, but i have developed some conditioned responses , like a dog who lives near an electric fence...

Energy saving preferences seem to have an adverse effect-If the machine goes to sleep, or drives spin down from inactivity it inevitably causes problems.

Opening other apps while a project with VI is loading and particularily, going online during a loadup seems to cause bad stuff. In fact i think this may have triggered my most recent problem....

    Best of luck...

    Ray

  • I went through every step you listed above and it still doesn't work.  Downloaded fresh installs to make sure they weren't corrupt.  I have done about 10 premissions repairs, 3-4 uninstall-install combos.  No matter what I do now I get the spinning ball of death if I try to click on the Plug-in to launch the VI window.

Where can I find the log files needed to send for troubleshooting?

    Thanks,

    Maestro2be

    Sorry to hear this-

When i initially had this problem Maya asked for the following information....

In order to find out what causes the errors you reported it would be very useful if you could provide the following additional information and files:

    1) <System Profile>

    - select "About this Mac" from your Apple Menu and click on "More Info..." to open the System Profiler

    - when everything is loaded, please save the profile through File/Save as.

    2) <Console/System log files>

    - go to utilities and open the tool <console>
    - open the system.log and save a copy of it, then open also the console.log and save a copy

    3)

Which software and which version (build number) do you have installed (Vienna Instruments, Vienna Ensemble 2 or Vienna Ensemble 3)?

What exactly did you do before the problem occurred? How often do you encounter these errors while using the software -- every few hours, about once a day, once a week? Please send us also screenshots of the error messages that show up (if any). A screenshot of the Vienna Ensemble main window and the Directory Manager main window would be also helpful and let us know if you have any soft e-licensers by Syncrosoft installed.

Please "stuff" or "zip" the files and send them to: m.vinson@vsl.co.at

Thanks in advance for helping us to narrow down the issue, and our apologies for the trouble you've encountered so far.

  • Thanks for all the details Ray. I tried evrything you stated and I, also, keep getting the spinning ball. I sent my log reports in, but am still waiting to hear something. You mentioned about problems can happen if the computer goes into sleep mode while running the app. I did this several times last week.....put the computer to sleep before bed, while Logic was still going. Maybe that is what led to this? Really need to get it going again though!

  • Very odd-

try disabling sleep mode, make sure drives don't sleep also.

Make sure the computer is offline and other apps are off-specifically itunes or audio related stuff.

Also if you have other plugins that may need updating?.I'm thinking of things like Kontakt etc that may have an adverse effect on the whole show...

As i said before i'm no expert, it's all a dark art to me but my instinct is that it's like a house of cards-

Maybe you will hear from the VSL people soon and hopefully the solution is simpler than my Heath Robinson suggestions....

  • Well here is some interesting things noted today.  I decided to test a few things and here are the results.

    1.  I created a new project in Logic, and the VI interface comes up perfectly.

    2.  I opened a song from a while ago that has never crashed and it opened the VI plug-in interface perfectly.

    3.  I then opened my recent project who gets the spinning ball everytime and it still gets the spinning ball.

So, it is quite possible that the problem is being contributed by a corrupt project due to the VI interface crashing me in the past.  Because it's only a few songs that are doing it right now and they are my most needed ones at the moment.

What files etc could I try to reload or wipe out to fix this issue on a per project basis?

I hope you guys will do my 3 tests above (in the same order) and share your results.

By the way, I have always had sleep mode disabled etc.  I never let my machine go into sleep mode and the HD's are set to never go to sleep.

  • One more thing I just decided to test.  I am going to remove all of my VI interface plug-ins for these projects locking up.  Save it.  Then reload them into the channels and see if it fixes it.  Maybe you could try this too (if it's not to difficult for you).

I will get back with my results.

  • Wow sorry for the spam sandwich but one additional thing I just found.  It's not EVERY track in the song that locks up.  I can open the VI interface on most of the tracks in my locking up projects.  It's just my solo violins doing it in the first one I tested.

    Hmm this is strange.

Well I tested taking out the Plug-in and reloading it on the tracks that locked up and it fixed the issue.  Try this on yours too.  This still does not answer for the slow interface and for the other bugs that are known and hopefully fixed in an upcoming release.

  • Sounds like you are on to something-I should have mentioned that i had opened an empty logic default song and that was where it all started working for me again-

This really points towards a Logic issue rather than VI-I encountered a similar problem when trying to open a 3rd party Piano Virtual instrument in Logic 9-

  • I tried the steps you suggested. A new project works fine, and older ones are also OK. I removed all of the VI's from the current song file that I am having issue with, saved, reloaded them, and Logic still is locking up when I try to open the interface. It does seem to be with this new file that something corrupt is still remaining. All out of ideas!

  • Try this.  Create a new project just like the one you're working on now (same amount of tracks etc).  Once you're done doing that, then load up all the VI windows.  Once you do that see if you can bring up the windows.  If it lets you and doesn't lock up, then open up your OLD one that's locking up, copy all the TRACK information (you're actually notes and audio) and paste them into the new project.  So in essence, you will be bringing only the midi data from your old one into a totally new project file.  Just don't try to open the VI windows in the old one.  Just copy and paste the track information only from the old one to the new one.

Maybe this will work I hope.

  • I just spent the whole day trying and retrying what you suggested with making a completely new project and paste the track info from the old file onto it. All windows came up fine before I added the MIDI data. I added the MIDI content and things worked fine at first. I then started making some changes on the VI interfaces of some of the instrumnets, then upon opening the next window, the spinning ball came back. This a MIDI file exported from Sibelius. In the Logic VI's, I used the same Sibelius presets that I used in the Sibelius project. There have been way too many days spent on this issue!
